do you use sunblock or anything on your skin? if you do, it could be an allergic reaction.

first of all, try not to scratch it. you might have passed by or rode onto an area where there are lotsa haystacks... the wind might have flown some particles from it (of some sort) that caused the itching. or you might have rode onto a road where rice grains were dried... they itch like hell. it'll pass. sometimes, a long bath will take 'em away.

We need more information about you to make an assessment. I like the sunblock diagnosis, otherwise all we can do is guess. Is this your first time on a long intense ride? If you're not used to the heat and sun your skin could be reacting badly. I don't know if this applies to you, but I've heard of fair skinned people getting a heat rash.
I was on a long road ride during a windy day. When I arrive back at my home, I noticed very fine droplets on my glasses, helmet, bike and even my skin. After thinking back I remembered that an apartment building I rode past was being spray painted with high pressure compressors. It's not impossible to come across some type of irritant, just as daimler suggested.
I hope it clears up quickly.

Yup ... the higads have my vote for your problem and location
My rashes are a bit different ... I get them after using any cycling shorts with neoprene armor pads (the ones stitched to the bodyfit DH cycling shorts ) ...I solved it by using the skin lotion of my kids Aveeno or Drapoline

xob, you might be allergic to the heat. i also suffer the same symptoms as you. but i get them in terms of extrme heat or cold! then itches galore! hehehe... but after a while the itching subsides! anyways hope you got a check up with a dermatologist to be sure! ride safe!
