If you can get hold of the January 2006 edition of Mountain Bike Action, it has an article about disc brakes. They had the "big four" disc brake shootout. They tested the following hydraulic disc brakes: Avid juicy 7, Hayes El Camino, Shimano XT and Magura Marta SL. The "Best overall' award went to Magura Marta SL. The "Fine-tune" award went to Avid. The "Power" award went to Hayes and the "Ease-of-use" award went to Shimano.
Just read the details in the mag. ;D

They don't want to piss off any advertisers: someone at MBA has an MBA. That's always the problem with magazine reviews: there's no way business isn't going to enter the picture. Might be better off looking at mtbr.com reviews, though you have to use some judgement there too, as some of the reviews seem to be written by people from the dark side of planet weird. Can't really say much about the brakes: I live too far from a bike shop to worry over hydraulics. I heard the words "bleed kit", and my response was "BB7". The old reliable Avid mechanicals are doing fine by me.

Pros: Lots of power Cons: Re bleed once a year due to lost power. My take: Evaluate your riding style. If you do lots of downhilling hydro a must but if you do mostly xc mechanical or rim brake works fine .

jr, specifically why do you need hydros when downhilling?

jr, specifically why do you need hydros when downhilling? I should say downhilling/enduro riding.. Well I not a avid downhiller just occational but I noticed with hydros you have a better control on braking and easier on fingers compare with regular pads. Also looks how much money you will spend when your rim and pads are worn .

Louise FR. The Freeride-Queen. Open hydraulic disc brake system with integrated reservoir. Dual piston fixed caliper with automatic pad wear adjustment in a smart one piece design for maximum stiffness. Pad wear thickness can be checked without removal of the pads. Drilled SL rotor in a wave design for improved cooling. 2-finger aluminium lever blade with integrated reach adjust. NEW for 2006: Louise FR comes now with a silver lever blade and caliper cover and looks smarter than ever before. Two additional versions for the Fox 40 and Manitou Travis suspension forks complete the range. The respective fitting kits are also available separately for customers who want to adapt their Louise FR brake accordingly.

@mondy: thanks sir for the scan file of the MBA Jan2006 issue..helps a lot. raven: yes brad, i`m leaning more on the Saint, problem is...no one sells it with the caliper/lever/adaptor only... it`s always a set with the hubs. i`m planning to use my Avid 8" rotors if ever i get a Saint caliper/lever only. thanks brad. jr: sir i`m more on a agrresive trail riding with occasional DH..but not planning to race though.. thanks sir for the input. Poseur: wow! one set of beauty! but i think that will cost a lot of moola i guess... ;D thanks dayuhan, clutchshooter and Tolits: yes sir, i agree with you. thanks. BrusKO: i tried my friends hydros and i like it the way they feel during a trail ride, especially on downhill. i once said that i will not upgrade into hydros but the benefits and the lever feel made me change my mind...

huh? well isn't that less than the SAINT or Juicy 7? U posted these brakes so i'm thinking that's all w/in your budget. Saint here are even much more than the J7...unless Shimanos are REALLY that good a deal in the phils.

Saint here are even much more than the J7...unless Shimanos are REALLY that good a deal in the phils. coz a Saint Caliper/Lever without rotors, F/R are price at 8000 PHp at a LBS(bad thing is they are out of stock.. ) while a Juicy 7 8" rotor F/R are price about 11000 PHp sa Pinas... the El caminos are 17000 PHp a set... thus the price of the Maguras are already for front and rear? then if that`s the case... mura nga siya! ;D
