Sir Janix,
Baka you mean 95 LX and 96 Alivio. I can't understand kung bakit pareho ang prices nila.
Just the same, get the LX. If you can get a good price for the 8-speed XTR set, XTR ka na all the way.
Goodluck.

LX na. Are these brand new? Check mo rin if you're fine with dual controls. Although it's nice to be able to shift and brake with one lever, some people don't like the feel of dual control.

janix, take note lang, when you want to upgrade to a different shifter like SRAM or a different brakeset, then kailangan mong palitan both brake lever and shifter.
pero teka, 95 model na dual control? meron na ba nyan? baka integrated brake and shifter pod to? not necesarrily dual control where you can shift and brake with the same lever?

Tanong mo muna kung compatible yan sa V-brake. Some of the older dual controls are designed for canti-lever brakes (parang pang cyclocross). They will still work w/ V brakes but it might not be as strong or perform optimally or may feel spongy. If this is the case, you might get better braking performance with the newer Alivio.

V brake levers, I believe, are 100% compatible w/ mechs. disc brake. If the levers are for Canti's, baka mahabol mo naman sa adjustment. If you're buying from a bike shop, let them install it for you, that way, if you don't like the feel/performance of the brakes, you can exchange it w/ the newer Alivio.
