I toasted my truvativ ISIS bb, after around 6 mos of use (around 750 km only!). The LBS said the ISIS BB's, no matter what brand, never last, and that if I stick to ISIS, I should expect to change BB's around every 6 mos. This is ridiculous. If this is true, I'm dumping my bb and crankset and going for another system. Any suggestions for alternatives. I don't want to change bb's every 6 mos, and I'm also considering changing my crank. Some have suggested the old shimano square tapers - UN71/72/73. Are these still easily available? How about the x-type, or external bearing types? (race face, shimano, FSA mega-exo, etc.) Any reviews, anyone using one for more than a year? Thanks in advance for your comments. BTW, no major jumps and drops for me. Only aggressive xc and road.

haaaay! sad to say...but it is true. isis bb's lasts an average 6 months. i have tried the raceface (2 mos. lang nga ito eh), truvativ and now i'm on my 2nd fsa platinum pro. funny but this 2nd fsa bb that i have on right now is on its 8th month. Ritchey came out in the market a couple of months ago with their own bb, maybe its worth trying.
yes the shimano UN bb's are still available in the market sir

imho maybe shift to outboard bearing type bb that shimanos offering. i know lot of folks using this outboard bearing and so far theyre all happy with the performance. you need to change your old crank though.

personal experience, I used the ordinary Truvativ Isis BB that came with the Hussefelt cranks. It creaked after six months of use. 2 rides every weekend with once a month DH in tagaytay. I switch to Truvativ DH BB, no problems after that and it has been over a year now.

thanks for the input guys. I'll probably go the way of the truvativ dh ISIS BB, so I dont have to change my Firex cranks, which have served me well so far.
Btw, rbc, is your truvativ dh bb the single bearing type?

cobym,
I don't know. It just says Truvativ DH at the label. it's not the Gigatype model. But I was looking for the Gigatype DH when I bought mine but it was not in stock. I would go also for Alien_scream's suggestion

Can I use the Truv Gigapipe DH in my Raceface Evolve XC crank? Its not the crank interface that you should be worried about. As long as it is ISIS standard the crank and bottom bracket interface should be no problem. What you should be concerned is the fitting of the bottom bracket and the bottom cracket shell of your frame. Take note of the shell size and also the spindle lenght.

i've had that similar truvativ ISIS BB (i think this is the one with the white sticker label on it) and used it for only like 3 weeks then naging magaspang na yung ikot nya, everytime i'll step up para humataw ng pedal it sounded like "tak, tak tak" siguro dahil sa kababagsak hehehe... so i switched to the truvativ gigapipe team DH 4 bearings (much heavier though) but i do believe na mas matibay naman sya

I've just ordered a Truvativ Stylo w/o doing much research on isis drives. The crankset has not arrived but I'm starting to regret ordering the Stylo after going through the product reviews and comments on isis bottom brackets at mtbr.com as well as other mtb websites. I'm thinking that the FSA Mega-exo Isis might be a good option for those with isis drive cranks. Even ith its external bearings, chainline is not affected and works with most if not all isis cranks. So far those cranksets using external bearings have been receiving good reviews. www.fullspeedahead.com/fly.aspx?layout=product&taxid=60&pid=120Hopefully they will last longer.

I have a truvativ giga pipe SLLT model, which I have not installed yet. Would it be a good bottom bracket or should I return for it a DH model?

Just an update. I took out my Truv. SLLT BB which I thought was a goner. I thoroughly cleaned it and soaked it in degreaser. let it dry out, then oiled and greased everything. When I put it back on, voila!!!! Its good as new nanaman. So far, its lasted two rides (incl. one wet one in Maarat). I'm waiting for it to conk out. I'm now having mixed feelings about this ISIS thing.

vertigoI have the Giga X Pipe BB, which came with the 2005 Truvativ Firex crank. The external BB looks more durable than the internal one aside from being lighter.

another option is to check out the new fsa octalink cranks. they're pretty cheap to. fsa v-drive for octalink is only around P1800 at all terra. shimano octalink bb's are (usually) more durable then any isis bb. the isis vdrives cost P3k+

Just an update: The Truvativ BB, 4 rides after I cleaned and regreased, now has side to side play, causing my crank to "lean" when hammering. This is the end of the BB. Its now in my dust bin. I'm now on a FSA Plat Pro ISIS BB. Hope this lasts.
