I currently ride a Salsa Caballero full suspension bike. I normally swap wheelsets on weekdays when I just ride around town and my village with road tires.
I am now looking for a permanent "road" mountain bike that I want to setup more like a light XC racer. Ofcourse I'm also building this up for my girlfriends use. It's a good thing that she's tall so we can share bikes.
WHat do you guys think of the following frames:
1. KHS Alite 4000 2. Giant XTC 3. Jamis Komodo
Or whatelse is out there thats a performer, lightweight, and can handle my 200+Lbs?

I'm also considering building up either a XTC or Alite 4k for XC racing. The Komodo seems to be beefier -- more of a jump/urban bike, suited for a longer-travel fork.

I just got a deal on an XTC team and took it. I have to save up now to put together decent parts for it. Anyone selling used 04 XT group set?

Pat, You could also consider a brand new LX 05 groupset instead. Shimano "trickles down" the technology found in its high-end component sets and you'll see that the 05 LX shares virtually all the features of the 04 XT's, such as the dual control levers, rapid-rise derailleurs and center spline hubs. Some of the Munti boys use the 05 LX and you can get their feedback on it. Check out the buy & sell threads. Domz (Brandom) has a few in stock. I'm sure he'll give you a good deal on it. Carlos

I'll check it out. But wouldn't you think that an 04 XT could be cheaper but still perform better or at least at par with an 05 LX?

in most cases, Shimano follows a trickle down policy. If you could get XT 04 cheaper than LX 05, that would be great. The XTC Team hardtail is a great frame. I use a size 19 for road and light trail rides.

Pat - possible for you to get an 04 XT groupset (used) cheaper than an 05 LX...but that's quite rare to find - a full groupset being disposed of... esp since it's an XT. Easier for you to find XT components moving around as separate pieces rather than as a whole group. I'm sure Don would have some in stock... ;D

CMP you're getting another bike eh? Haha does your wife know about that? Don, I intend to use my old marzocchi's on the xtc. Don't really want to spend too much on this right now. I also have deore cranks I think will do for now. I want to upgrade my stem and handlebar (i have maxm seatpost now what do you think of matching it with maxm handlebar and what stem to get?) for my salsa so the old turbolite cockpit can go on the xtc. All I need now are avid mechs (so I can switch wheels), shifters/levers (deore 9 spd will do), FD (any), RD (preferrably 9spd XT), and saddle. I already have wheelset (223 Mavics, deore disc hubs, XT sprocket 34t) What else can you recommend?
