Roof is better. More secure, less stress on the car. More expensive also.
Trunk is cheaper. More likely to damage your trunk/bumper, and it can obstruct the signal lights and driver's rear view.
Beware: I saw some guy's bike fly off his cheapo trunk rack.
If you can't get a real roof rack, go for a good quality trunk rack like the Thule Freeway (under P4000 at True Value) or Saris Bones (P7000).
It might also be possible to tear down the bike so it fits inside your car. Depends on bike and car size, though.

mr. suave, yung Thule freeway na binanggit ni woofers, i think is the model na di kailangan ibaklas yung front wheel ng bike (like for the Velo Vise Pro which i have)

mr. suave, that's a nice choice! better than the one i saw at Thule Ortigas! yung kasing nakita ko, the middle support locks on to the down tube...at medyo prone to scratching your frame if its dirty. your choice is much nicer! btw, Thule's # is 744-6367 (Ortigas showroom). They give decent service my Velo Vise Pro? got it for about 6-6.5k i think...last year.

the velo vise is pretty sturdy, basta tama ang installation. nung una kasi, baliktad ang pagkalagay ng isang piece na parang spacer sa may lock sa likod.
i like it b/c its lockable, and solid if installed properly. i don't like it b/c i have to take the front wheel off...
if the model you're looking at had been available when i was scouting for a roof-mounted bike rack, i would have gotten it ;D

Best my own experience Hitch or trunk are better than roof. This best my experienced on my 4runner. You need to climb to put and remove the bike. If you have YAKIMA dealer they have a better selections.
Hitch or Trunk Pros: Less Noise Easy to put after a long tired ride. Leave till next ride.
Cons: Its ugly (extra decoration on the car)
ROOF:
Pro: Its shows your beautiful bike. No need to remove (It shows you're a biker)
Cons: Noisy when driving Hard to put in the rack Need extra energy to put back after a long ride. Be carefull you hit a tree or going in the garage. Tendency to unlock in bump road (not locking rack) Dent and scratches on the car.

just to add (especially in the Philippine setting)... a roof mounted bike rack makes it harder for anyone to tamper w/ your bike while on the road, esp while driving through "unfriendly areas"

Sir Suave,
Anong klase ba ang auto ninyo. If it's a sedan, a roof/trunk rack will be both perfect. On the other hand, if it's an SUV, RAV4, CRV, and the like-type, go for the trunk or spare wheel mount. Mahirap kasing buhatin at i-mount kapag mataas ang bubong ng tsikot. With that, you need help just to get your bike on/off the vehicle. Further, kung pick-up naman, the bed-mount ang mas feasible.
Lastly sir, try considering stability over convenience when the bike is mounted. What I mean is, the fork mount is the most stable kahit palundagin ninyo pa ang tsikot.
Kung ang pinuproblema ninyo ay ang pag-assemble ng inyong bike once you arrive at the trail site, that's very trivial when you're with other Pinoymtbikers. Jack-of-all-trade po ang mga lahat na yan. Maaayos kung sa maaayos. No one will be left behind from the start till the end of the ride. Good luck sir and kita tayo sa trails.

Milo,
Heto nga gusto kong sumama sa Maarat this Saturday, kaso lang may commitments na. Kung Sunday sana, I won't even give it a second thought.
Hayaan mo, marami pa namang weekends ahead.
Pre, kumusta nga pala ang pictures? Malinaw ba? Post mo naman. About your wheelset, napa-true mo na ba? Isipin mo you're an EXTREME DOWNHILLER, as you have mentioned, kaya paayos mo yun kung mag-Mamaarat kayo this Saturday.
Ingat lagi and kita tayo sa trails.
Aaron (Mr. Suave)
Sir, if you're considering the bike rack, I just read one about two weeks past being sold at BUY AND SELL. Check mo sir baka nandoon pa. Kung gusto mong lalong maka-tipid, mag-pa-custom made ka sa any wrought metal shop. Just give them the specs of your car and they'll make it for you. I think si BlackMagic may kakilala and can help you with that. He had his rack custom fabricated and nadadala pa niya sa Sta. Rosa na walang problema.
Goodluck and kita tayo sa trails.

mr suave
are you gonna fit the bike rack sa itlog lancer mo na 4G63 Turbo? hehehe kung roofmount baka tumalsik pag nag drift ka ehehehehe
There is really not much of choice in brand when it comes to roofrack/bikerack. Thule is popular here because sila ang may showroom at kalat ang mga retail outlet.

After over 2 years of trying to get a trunk rack to work for more than one bike, I've come to the following conclusion:
Trunk racks suck
I've owned a cheap trunk rack, same design as the Giant rack sold at Powerbikes etc. as well as the twice as expensive Thule Freeway. Both sucked for me.
The cheap racks are definitely inferior in components and assembly. The parts in contact with your car are either foam or rubber pads wrapped around the aluminum bars. The webbing straps that keep the rack in place are prone to slip or stretch too. The hooks at the end of the straps may or may not be vinyl covered. If they're not, expect them to scratch up your paintjob.
Your bike is supposed to be held in place by a rubber ridged "condom", but invariably it will bounce out of position as soon as you start moving. You absolutely must strap your bike onto the rack or car with bungee cords or straps. And strap it in well, because I've seen one guy's bike fly off the rack as his car took a corner at 30kph.
The Thule Freeway 968 is a lot better in terms of construction and parts. In contact with your car are soft rubber feet instead of cheap foam pads. They're less likely to slip or scratch your paintjob. The bikes are kept in place with rubber straps on the carrying arms. No bungee cords required, although an extra strap is provided.
Still, I'm not happy with the Freeway. Fixing it to the car is easy enough, and it seems pretty stable until you load on the bikes. Once the bikes are on, the leverage on the carrying arms transmitted to the rubber feet will flex the top of the trunk enough that the straps to the bottom of the tailgate will come lose and dangle free. This destabilizes the rack considerably. What's more, under the load of a single bike the feet that are supposed to be resting on the tailgate will move out of position and may fall on the bumper. On my Honda Civic, this was enough to knock the bumper down half a centimeter.
I also had a lot of trouble mounting my bikes. They have small frames and it's tough getting them on the rack. The carrying arms are too far apart. If you have a medium or large frame, you won't have this problem.
Maybe a different car -- one with more solid tailgate and/or bumper -- the Freeway will work better. As it is, I'm putting it up for sale as soon as I get a roof rack.
Next time I want to bring my bikes along, I'll just take off the wheels and stuff it in the trunk or on the back seat.

woofers, thanks for the advise sir. am also afraid that the trunk may give way due to it's load. It might deform the trunk as well as the bumpers. I love my car as well as my bike. I think I might have to invest more on the bike racks so i can get peace of mind on transporting them. much appreciated anybody selling a worn out still running pick-up truck hehe

woofers experience pretty much reflects why i've never bought a trunk rack for my sedan go roof na lang, or just pack ur bike in the trunk. some people use bike bags to keep the mud of their carpets but don't know where they're available here
