‘Cycling priest’ loses wheels to thieves
Inquirer Last updated 06:38am (Mla time) 06/24/2007
DAVAO CITY, Philippines—Fr. Amado Picardal, who bikes around the country bringing a message of peace, has lost his bicycle to thieves.
Last week, the 52-year-old priest, who is called “Father Picx,” had just arrived from a trip to Iligan City when he learned of the theft which occurred right in the compound of the Redemptorist Congregation here.
“The first thing they told me was ‘Father, we got bad news for you. Your bike was stolen,’” Picardal told the Inquirer on Friday.
It was the same mountain bike, except for the main frame and some parts, that Picardal used on his first bicycle road trip from Davao City to the northern tip of Luzon in 2000.
He took another trip last year, biking some 2,000 kilometers over concrete and dirt roads across Mindanao, including conflict-affected areas, in 21 days. In every town he stopped at for the night, he offered a Mass.
The theft of his bike would not prevent him from continuing with his advocacy, he said.
He is set to embark on his longest bike trip yet in the next two years. This time he will set out from Davao City and pedal to the Cordillera in Luzon and back, taking different routes each way.
In this connection, he has appealed to the person who took his bike: “Please return it because I need it to travel the Philippines.”
He said he was not interested in filing charges against the culprit provided [he] “just return it.” Dennis Jay Santos, Inquirer Mindanao

I too was shocked with the specs of his bike , butch Thieves wont be able to resist that bike! Priced like a not so late model car already. Unless it was given to him, I have issues with that vs. the vow of poverty etc etc... now Im having 2nd thoughts with bike specs and the girly claims Lord, have mercy

Thank you , brad, for helping sort this out That s what we needed to know ... for a number of reasons including : its embarrassing to give a "step above entry level" bike to the priest given that his lost bike s a "highend" unit which maybe functionally preferred by the rider BTW, the RS psylo is a great fork and I would not exchange that for a triple clamp fork...for all mountain use Bottomline is ...its all good (except for the theft)

For those who wants to get in touch with Fr. Picardal, here the info I got so far. Phone number & add provided. As for the arrangement of the said parts, maybe you need to pool it first. Then think later on how to send it.

guys got this from PCN....
Hi Jovan and fellow PCNers,
Thanks for your concern. I received a text from Patrick Deakin informing me that he and his friends are donating a new mountain bike that I can use for my Bike-Tour around the Philippines. So no need for PCN to donate a bike or some bike parts. Thanks once again for the kind gesture. Hope you can bike with me for a few hours or for a day when I pass your cities this summer 2008.
Fr. Picx

Priest biking for peace gets new wheels after theftBy Dennis Jay Santos Mindanao Bureau Posted date: July 15, 2007 DAVAO CITY, Philippines -- Bicycle-riding priest Amado Picardal has found a new set of wheels after losing the bike he had been riding since 2000 to advocate peace was taken by thieves on June 17. After the theft of his favorite mountain bike, the 52-year-old priest, fondly called Father Picx, said: "I've been down since it was lost." But a couple of days after the Philippine Daily Inquirer, parent company of INQUIRER.net, carried the story on the theft of the bike, which was parked inside the Redemptorist Church here, a Patrick Deakin from Metro Manila contacted this correspondent. "I have read the story and I wish to give Father Picx a mountain bike. How can I contact him?" Deakin, who initially declined to identify himself then, asked. He said he only wanted to help Father Picx. True enough, Deakin did contact Father Picx and the two talked about how the new bike could reach the priest. On July 6, Father Picx said he was in Manila and was preparing for his trip to Bangalore, India when he met Deakin. Deakin had a new TFS Merida mountain bike, fitted with high-end components. Father Picx said the bike that Deakin gave is estimated to cost about P60,000, twice the amount he spent for his old bike. "It was a blessing in disguise," he said of the loss of his old bike. Father Picx said he could not afford on his own to buy a bike similar to what Deakin gave. "The theft of my old bike was a blessing in disguise. I got a new bike which I could never afford," he said. In his blogsite, Father Picx described the new bike as "capable of negotiating all kinds of roads in the Philippines -- including the rough roads of the Cordillera mountain ranges." The priest said he was happy with the gesture, not only of Deakin, but those who believed in his cause. He said that aside from Deakin, three other people offered him a new bike. Among them were a certain Brione, a Dolly and another from the Philippine Cycling Network. But Father Picx said he chose Patrick because "he was the one who called first." The priest also thanked the store owner from whom the bike was bought because he gave a discount after learning it would be given to him. Father Picx said the new bike would soon be tested on a trip similar to his 2000 Davao-Northern Luzon trip and his 21-day Mindanao tour.
