take a car coming from san mateo, it's steeper but shorter, coming from the marikina/afp side, it's not as steep but longer. pick your poison. what im interested in is a "flatter" way, hehe.

yup, i agree w/ sir king, bring a car, drive all the way up to ka tobias (mini store before reaching the gate of Timberland subd.) then start pedalling to trailhead. that's where the fun starts

if you dont mind the dirty looks from the people who are actually biking up at least you're missing 1/2 of the maarat experience if yu dont bike up. it's hard but it will make you a better biker. the best way, if you take a car, is to park in chowking and then bike up to timberland. yup, i agree w/ sir king, bring a car, drive all the way up to ka tobias (mini store before reaching the gate of Timberland subd.) then start pedalling to trailhead. that's where the fun starts

the wall of maarat will always be there to challenge us mountain bikers/roadies. climbing the wall is what mountain biking or for that matter uphill pedalling is all about. i agree with sir king that you miss 1/2 of the fun when you take your bike by car to ka tobias and start at the trailhead immediately.
my US$0.02
ps: btw- after doing maarat the umpteenth time, i haven't conquered it yet (completely pedalled from tina's to ka tobias). but even if i did, doing maarat will always be a challenge. sarap ng pawis at exercise ng leg and heart muscles.......bog...bog....bog..........

We just have to be grateful that Maarat is now paved and can be climbed. Hard, but doable. When I first did Maarat, I believe it was in 1997, it was just dirt road, and very technical. The rocks were as big as basketballs, and they were everywhere. And nobody thought of climbing Maarat. We had to come from wawa, or afp/monterey, or the now closed san mateo dump/landfill which they then moved to macabud. We can only downhill it, climbing it is basically pushing our bike the whole 2+ kms. Some sections were impossibly steep that time.
So just pedal up, and suffer Maarat. We all do.

I tried doing the New Manila-UP-Tumana bridge-Marikina-San Mateo-Maarat and back yesterday. Met up with NVP going to Licao-licao. I just climbed the wall twice and went back since I had to do something.
It was a good 50++ km route. Might do it again.
Thanks Melgunner for the route...

gt, congratulations to your decision to do maarat trails. the traditional route going to maarat is via the san mateo route (from UP straight to commonwealth, right to batasan road, right to batasan-san mateo road (downhill), left to jp rizal, the next street after mercury right again (just follow the signboard that reads timberland). the traditional start of the wall climb is at tina's eatery (if you're bringing a car, you can park your car here). from tina's its approx. 2.7km up to timberland gate. from tina's to the bridge is a regular pedalling, after the bridge the ascent starts but gradually though, the ascent becomes harder as you near the columbary (so get those gears ready once you reach the bridge). for peepz doing the wall for the first time, a granny gearing will be a sane thing to do once you are at the columbary gate, from thereon it's the start of the unforgiving upHELL climb (don't worry you can always do reststops to catch your breath once the going get's tough), climb recovery starts only after doing the 2 sikos and the long uphill stretch and upon seeing a roadside store at your left. it will give you a couple of minute to catch your breath (in case you didn't do any reststop somewhere) and after that is the final uphill stretch (around 300M or something) leading to the traditional final reststop point, which is ka tobias. if you are a bit adventurous, you can skip ka tobias and instead pedal all the way the uphill leading to timberland gate (additional 100M uphill) and go down again to ka tobias. ka tobias is where all the mtbiker peepz rests and prepare before entering the maarat trailhead part 2 to follow btw, are you pedalling all the way? Kuya Arci,
I was a bit confused last Sunday when ME and JAN attempted to climb THE WALL. after turning right to TIMBERLAND from JP Rizal, we were confused as there are so many pasikot-sikot na daan going up. But finally we managed to reach the Gate of Sta Barbara. Afterwhich, we decided to quit and went back to Marikina via Fortune.
Is there anybody here who could send me a "Google Earth Placemarks" as to where are the points to consider in going to Maarat? Maybe the "Placemarks" should start indicating from JP Rizal - Timberland and so -on and so forth. You may send it to my email: benjprad@gmail.com
Thanks.

gtyou can park your cars at tina's (the traditional jump-off point). and enjoy your breakfast of steaming arroz caldo, lomi or papaitan. btw, we will do the wall (no trails) on sat., oct. 21, you might want to meet-up with us at tina's 0700 assuming that you hit maarat on a perfect biking day (read: no rains the day/night before and the ride day, unless you enjoy mudfest and don't mind it) the best trail to hit is GIANT. but if you're more adventurous you can also try the Roxas Trail. remember that timberland (aka the wall) is the doorway to all the exciting trails maarat has to offer, it's for our taking. Good luck and happy maarat riding, hope to see you on the trails!
