personally, i dont care if some people think we're 2nd class as long as we are given due respect on and off the roads.
of course we must also fulfill our end of the bargain. let's keep on biking!

When I bike to work, I always hold my head up high. I take pride in using the bike in going around the city. I don't have a car, but I do have a motorcycle. Yet you can almost always see me using my bike. Please visit my blog for proof of what I do as a biker: ruralpinoybiker.com. Don't let anybody call us 2nd class citizens for we uphold a very noble purpose: saving the environment and thus, prolonging man's life on earth!

Back with the topic about bike commuters being 2nd class, I think some people just give too much weight with the impression of others toward us. The problem is not about self-respect of bikers. The problem is about attitudes of non-bikers and biker-commuter alike, and specifically road planners and government. Unless we do something about the problem of (dehins naiimpress at dehins mataas ang tingin) poor impression on bikers, the treatment will stay the same for all time. .... Bicyclists, Motorists and the Language of Marginalizationit would help if the title of the thread is rephrased so posters can be guided of the proper context. sir gadget's point is worthy of good discussion. while we are thought of as second class, we are exposed to different levels of risks. visit the link on the quoted text, it's a long read though.

it would be a different world if we bike on trails and mountains. Communities and people living along the trails we rode think we are 1st class (hehhee) But then I guess that is why its called a mountain bike, so we must use it in the mountains rather than on the road.. that leaves Roadies on the roads with carbon monoxide monster fogging and harrassing the cyclists as 2nd class people ;D Of course I was only kidding on the roadies as 2nd class.. ;D

bikers 2nd class? a scene i witnessed a week ago while on the way to mcdonalds at the corner of valero and dela costa in makati... there was this dude riding a white specalized fs mtb who was side-swipped by a taxi cab as the taxi cab overtook the biker to let its passenger down. good thing the biker just lost his balance and the biker was able to control his crash. instead of helping the biker and checking if there was any injury, the cabbie shouted at the biker and the following ensued.... (translated alread) cabbie: are you crazy? are you attempting to commit suicide? biker: easy brod, i was on the right lane, you were the one who cut in (in a cool voice) cabbie: you're stupid you know! what if your bike scratched the paint of my cab, will you be able to afford a repaint? biker: (somehow was ticked off already) that's not the question pards! yeah, i could have your bucket of bolts painted ten times over, the question is, can you afford it if your bucket of rusty bolts damage my bike? do you know my bike costs more than that piece of trash you're driving? ( i swear, me and my officemate nearly choked ourselves while laughing while giving the thumbs-up sign to the biker dude! yeah!... we were supposed to make uzi more, but our tummies were rumbling already ;D) curahee!

im a bike commuter going to my office lately(almost everyday) and im also a driver of my own sports coupe(even race it on the drag strip)
i guess its all just in the mind of each rider weather to put yourself as 2nd class or not. if you really think you are 2nd class, you'll be. but if think the other way around, your not. simple as that i guess. never get stun with those bully driver, show them your not.
i always stop or stare madly and even shout and point at those drivers trying to pissed me off(private or PUV). but i make sure im loaded of course. if im not i just get there plate numbers and let my comrades do the jobs..

my friend from Jakarta, Indonesia told me a story about motorcycles being the most reckless drivers in that place. You cut them, they hide for a while, then appear again from nowhere, and kick off the side mirrors of your vehicle.
From time to time I have been pondering on that. Im like that I remember the plates the make and the color, even stalk where they would go. They are just to much I say.

hehehe.... not everyone is cycling literate... most people think that people riding bikes are peeps who cant afford motor vehicles.... sigh.... and some even think the road regulations are still in the 70s... and most of the PUV drivers are mindless about whats coming to them.....
i have a bad rep with peeps like that.... a lot of riders who do night rides in the metro will never forget me........... LOL.... i grew up in a bad environment....lol
Trans: Sa dami ng Driver na na-introduce ko sa kamao ko hahaha.... side mirror or emblem lipad sabay pasok 1-way di ka na aabutan nun! hahaha
then there are just plain rude PUV drivers.... the one's you'd love to hack with a machete in front of th cops while they watch..... hehehehe.....
Trans: lahat ng siga , nakakulong or patay na! never let anyone do that to you..... never allow anyone to look at you as 2nd class..... we all eat 3x a day and walk flat on the ground!
relax peeps..... dont go to jail just bcuz of peeps like that..... but if they verbally abuse you ...well what the hell di ba? just stab'em with a multi-tool to the nape.... ayus na! watch the fountain ka na lang! hahahaha........

talking about 2nd class... I never allow anyone to discriminate me. But we people look at us (bikers) as 2nd class and I guess it will always be like that.
My office at citibank, makati, 7:30am saturday. I passed by our office before doing a trail ride. I called one of our office staff to meet me at the lobby, so I could give the key for our server room, cause I don't want to go upstairs since I was riding my bike. While I was at the side-walk in front of the bldg. A guard was waving at me to come over to him. I just ignored him, thinking that it will only be brief, coz I'll just hand-over the key. He approached me & started yelling at me to move my @$$! I got fused & never moved an inch, we started arguing, Guard: Its prohibited to stay in front of the building. Me: "PROHIBITED?" says who?! Guard: Because, you may be blocking the way. Me: Hello, its very early & its a saturday! You hardly see anybody, around! Guard: Basta, Bawal! Me: I will not move, I'm standing in a public domain, & citibank DOES NOT OWN d side walk!
after a while our office staff arrive, I hand over the key, & left. All this happened under 2 minutes.
Yes, I was treated 2nd class by a low life, but the difference is I made my stand, cause I know my rights.

airsoft in cars or in a bag inst a very good idea.... everyone nowadays can own a real gun, at a firearms seminar/forum 2 yrs ago at crame's FEO we covered the gov's amnesty program.....lol!
i.e: you go to a gunshop in a mall----you can afford to spend 17k for a gun & 3k for a license---for a few more thousand bucks and the right supporting documents you'd also get a PTC----->
in the hands of a high tempered drunk? that makes you very dangerous & lethal around everyone.......
Now whats stopping you from getting one? if your primary reasons are for protecting your family, biznes or self....good but it doesnt always happen like that.....hehe
for 18k you can get a shotgun made in istanbul! its an assault shotgun 5rds compact foldable! perfect for stowing under carseats hmmm..........plus 3k you get a gun license! promo nga yan ng mga shops! duh...
..............now for the airsoft guns.... forget it....
trans: magkamali ka pa ng matutukan mabaril ka pa talaga ng tunay! eh di kaawa-awa ka hehehehe......thats why toy-replicas are also being regulated by the PNP...... hehehe
i say again: SAKSAKIN MO NG MULTI-TOOL! nyahahhahaha

This gives me creeps... pointing a gun on someone who offended you in the hi-way! A little more booze & you might pull the trigger. The thing is, if you are not level headed, don't bring a gun. It should only be used for defensive purposes, not offensive. Come to think of it, should you kill someone, you might end up in jail & loose your biking career.
