I'd like to know about your experience about the Nikon D40 especially its quirks if any.
I'm all set to take a leap into the digital divide and I have been looking at the Nikon D40. Its my choice for the moment because it is what I can immediately afford among the Nikon DSLRs.
Nikon is my brand choice because I have an AF Sigma zoom lens orphaned from my old Nikon film SLR that finally went kaput. I read though that my lens will not autofocus on the D40 because the latter does not have the mechanical coupling pin needed to drive the internal zoom mechanism in older lenses.
If I had the money, I'd really go for the Nikon D80 because it has the mechanical zoom coupling and it has a battery grip option to let you use six AA batteries. But the price difference is too great.
Thus for now, the D40 seems the only option. Any advice? TIA

brad i'd go for d50 if budget's tight. And yes your old lens will become a waste for the d40. I got myself a d50 coz a pro photographer that its a good cam to start with instead of the d40 which was also in my mind back then. d70 was better though but did not have the dough for it.
happy with my cam right now.

Yes, you're right. That's one option I could have with any money left over. Konting dagdag, lens na.
In fact, I'm gonna look for an affordable Sigma wide angle zoom later. I'm partial to wide angles because of my mountaineering days. The usual kit lens of 18-55mm is not good enough for me (in 35mm film lenses, they're just equal to about 28-80mm).
I'd like something equivalent to a 24mm at least.

I suggest you get a D50 it more of an entry level camera than the D40. On top of it the D50 has been proven since it has received the Technical Image Press Association TIPA 2006 best entry level DSLR. If your patient enough to save your resources it is worth it.

i've read that D40 handles images with higher ISOs compared to D80/D40x... this is according to www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/... anyway, i'll be having my first DSLR this thursday... can hardly wait... too bad, the outboard bearing type deore 2008 crankset has to wait for now...

Yep, i agree with RAUL, this is one great option that you have right now. Actually the 18-55 kit lens had very good reviews already. All you just need is some wide angle or zoom power dending on your choice. The 50mm 1.4 and the 50mm 1.8 would still work but in manual focusing mode. Many D40 users had these lenses and are happy with manual focusing. D50 are hard to find nowadays except for some photo developing stores found inside the malls which sells them for about 50K. If that's the case I would just look for a second hand D200 ;D Good luck on your DLSR Daimler! I'm sure you'll get hooked! If you think that biking is expensive due to upgraditis, wait till you get the much more contagious virus of the world of DSLR photography! One lens would already get you a built rig! Nyehehe, enough of these! Nothing beats when you get a picture perfect shot! To glockbiker, god for the D40 dude! It's one hell of a camera! I got one and swapped the kit lens to the D80 18-135 kit lens for more zoom. And also saving for the D300 ;D ;D ;D Good luck on your purchase!!!

baboinskyAre you buying your DSLR from LGGS? I'm quite wary of local traders who sell online only (I'll make an exception with Armen of Arleys Bikeshop- I met him personally even before I bought anything from him. He's OK). If you are, please post your buying experience with this trader. Yup, their prices are good.

Yup, hopefully it will be landing soon in our shores. The good news with D200 is there would be a lot who will be selling theirs to upgrade or you may wait for the brand new D200 to go down due to the new model. ;D

I went over the "fine print" of LGGS' Return and Refund Policy and it says:
"1. We allow and accept replacement of items for factory defective units only and have occur within 10 days
2. XXX 3. XXX
4. The 10 days replacement should meet the ff. conditions: * The merchandise is in its original and working condition, with complete accessories and packing materials. * Sales Invoice must be presented."
Items 1) & 4) SEEM TO CONTRADICT EACH OTHER.
If an item has a factory defect, then it’s possible that it MAY not be in working condition. In such a case, you can't avail of the touted 10-day replacement offer, because Item 4) says that the camera should be in WORKING CONDITION. SAY WHAT?!
AM I MISSING SOMETHING HERE?!!
Is this an example of “fine print” designed to trap the unwary buyer?

Sorry for the confusion guys. I just included the link of the LGGS website for price comparison only. For the value of what I'm buying, I'll be more comfortable buying it from a store. Thanks for the link Jarod!
Still contemplating if I should buy a DSLR or buy the yeti in the buy and sell section or use the money to pay for the engagement ring of my gf ;D
So many things to buy, so little money.

My two cents... A DSLR should be considered more than just a camera. Heck, for the dough you're going to shell out to buy one, it really stops becoming just another camera. In fact, becomes an investment that could bring you income if you choose to use it that way. My point? Buy the most versatile DSLR that you can. Get one that will allow you to shoot crisp and clear poster sized images, one that gives you the option of adding a battery grip and other accessories and most of all one that will take newer, faster lenses which really do count for a lot and make all the difference in the world when it comes to sharpness. If you just plan to take your camera to kiddie parties, malls, family outings etc.., etc... by all means buy the D40 (it's a good camera mind you... it's just too "watered down"). But, if you intend to capture images that you can actually work with I'd recommend the Canon 400 D. For a bit more (well OK, not a just a bit but close enough) you get a super versatile camera that even pros are happy with. Again, just my two cents... Canon rocks! Hehe. But, do enjoy your purchase brad. Click click click.

Amen! Spent my engagement ring money on my bike too brad. I say, get the DSLR. The more toys the better! ;D Oh by the way, don't retire your prosumer cam brad. Use it to back up your DSLR. I still use my sister's Fuji S602Z along with my DSLR.

let me contribute something. lately ive been into photography. i found out that i know how to take pictures pala. i took a basic photography class by PCCI, and now im planning to get a D40 for my first dslr next year - after i build my rig that is.
Now, i just go to Nikon.com and look for the D40 specifications. Look for the digitutor and there you go. i have already taken the tour tutor and i know how to manipulate the D40 eventhough i dont have it yet. ü

i already got my Nikon D40 last year since then i have already upgraded some stuff like the 55-200 mm VR, cant afford the 10-200VR it cost more than a new D40 kit, i also have bought the Speedlight SB600 and i am very happy with its capability. Now my next target is to get the 50mm prime lens for portrait shots.
