hello, slightly OT: how do you bust a PCB? roche, i think it could be moisture or tiny tiny ants entering the camera causing micro short circuits. just my opinion not an expert ;D

hello, slightly OT: how do you bust a PCB? Physical trauma, by dropping the camera, denting the casing which affects the circuit. Electrocution, by power surge, or short circuitry, caused by ants (yes, the too love electronics like we do) or moisture (water is a conductor). Moisture is bad for electronics. By using your gears in the beach (salt water moisture is a killer!) By moving from 2 extreme temperature changes, ex. snowing outdoor then moving indoors. By leaving your electronics in an airconditioned room without proper keeping. (Best to put cameras in a pouch, with silica gel to absorb moisture. Wrapping in towel also helps.) Also, electronic equipments are designed to be used. Not using them makes them expensive paperweights. Using them makes components heat up, helping evaporation. And most often than not, poor PCB design or poor component quality is the cause. They die on you, whether you use them properly or not. Have you ever bought any electronics at 168? Last something like 5 minutes? ... if you're lucky... Grrr

I'm a member of several photo egroups and its only now that I hear a comment that Canon sucks. The reason why my system is Canon is because of the good after sales service they have in the Phil.. Expensive depending on the parts that needs to be replaced, but good servioce I must say. I hope they're not slipping though.
The service center of Nikon is Columbia, and several Pro-digital photogrpahers have written Nikon Japan a complaint of the poor service of Columbia. A lot go to Singapore to have their babies fixed there.
If I were to purchase a point and shoot today, that would be very good for sports and outdoors, I'd go for the Olympus Digital MJUs. All of them are water resistant. One model is even waterproof to 15ft, shockproof to a drop of 5ft on cement floor, and dust resistant.
drool! drool! ;D

i love canon but they're aftermarket service sucks, bigtime (applies to the philippines i guess). i hope they change their evil ways, hehehe. ;D jonI have a different experience with Canon. My GF's Canon A85 suddenly broke down after 3 years with minimal usage. It had something to do with the LCD. I did not expect it to be broken since we did not use the digicam quite often nor was it ever dropped. We brought it to the Canon service center on Chino Roces to have it evaluated to see if it would be cheaper to buy a new digicam or to have it repaired since it was out of warranty already. We were surprised that they did not repair the camera, but replaced it with a higher model (A540) for free complete with another three month's warranty.

@gadgets: about those dessicants, i once met a hobbyist who would have the dessicant bag nuked (i.e., microwaved) supposedly to dry it. does that work? krx: yeah i wanna get me one of those Olympus waterproof cams! imagine you can still shoot during a ride even when it's drizzling, and you don't have to worry about dust ruining sensitive electronics inside. kaya lang 3x optical zoom lang e.

Uy, sir thanks for the links. I think my Mini-DV's on the list. I've been planning to take my cam to the service center since last year kaso a friend advised me that CCD repair/replacement are so expensive it's more logical just to buy a new cam. The links are good news, however. Sana.

thanks bo for this info. too bad my camera isnt in the list don't give up just yet. my friends S230 is not on that list and Canon is still going to help him out. Also, it's my guess that CCDs used in a model listed may be the same as another model that's not listed. If you could proved that the CCD in yours is the same as a model on the list, then Canon may be willing to accept your camera for repair. Manufacturers can sometimes be accommodating. I sent a nice letter to Honda/Acura after my car was out of warranty and explained my issue. They reimbursed me for a repair that cost $585. The work was done at a Acura dealer, not an independent garage, so parts were genuine.

I've heard about dessicants being revived by nuking with microwave. Turns the color of the dessicant gels back to blue or something. Personally I haven't done it. I just keep collecting dessicants from vitamin bottles, and those NORI (Japanese green leaves thingy) bought in unimart!

My A 75 digicam blacked out last Nov. was only able to bring it to Canon Service center along pasong tamo last Dec. before the holiday break. They told me the cause was this CCD thing so they told me that they'll repair it w/ no charge. What a relief! I thought I had to throw it away. I've had it for a couple of years now and since it was bulky compared to the newer slimmer cameras that you find today, I was willing to let her go. But since they're fixing it for free, have it fixed na, there was nothing wrong w/ the p[erformance naman, quite reliable as a matter of fact.
The only down side to this whole affair is currently there are no parts available, the good news is the shipment for the parts are expected at the end of this month. So i was told to call them 1st week of Feb. to follow up.
I felt the service being offered in my case is quite good.
