Been using my trusty old Minolta E323 for quite sometime now. But lately Ive been looking for some type of shots that i couldnt do with this point and shoot camera.
Im thinking of upgrading to an SLR and right now looking at Nikon D50 model. Any other suggestions? What's the best entry level SLR out there in the market?

digital? go for D50, if you have extra cash, go for D200... it's not anymore entry level, but it's on the midrange.

i have a d50 and im very happy with it. costs 50k plus here. if you get it in the states (amazon.com) it costs $600 and has freebies.
and another thing, get some good lenses. i suggest the nikkor 50mm f1.8

Thanks for the reassurance guys... The Nikon D50 is on top of my list. Should've bought it in Bangkok when I saw it. Only 26,000 baht including 18-55mm lense.
Anyways, any other suggestions from more experienced guys here?

i had a rebel 300d before i got the d50. almost the same. but the rebel has wider asa settings. the lowest you can go for the rebel is 100 while it's 200 for the d50.
but i prefer the d50 cause it feels more solid in my hands.
that d50 in bangkok was cheap! you should've grabbed it!

basically, if you want a simple SLR, you could get Nikon Coolpix 5700, 8700 and 8800. from Canon you could go Powershot S3, Pro 1, from Sony, DSC V3, DSC-F828. that's the three i would choose from. It's not lens interchangeable, but its a compact SLR. It has lots of features that can also be found on high-end SLRs. You could attach flash, filters and anything else.
If your on a budget, i'll start from those choices. of course, you could always get something from Konica-Minolta such as the DiMage, Pentax and many more manufacturers. But for me, i'm biased so i suggest get Nikon. heheh

Ok guys Nikon D50 it is... Thanks a lot.
@dirk. I was suppose to get the Nikon in Bangkok but they dont offer 0% extended terms unless you have local credit card. A friend suggested to try Hidalgo St. in Quiapo. Will just have to figure out where and how to get there...

He's the cheapest among the shops there. Oh and all the shops are closed during sunday. and while you're there, go grab some dvds as well. hahaha

To those who are planning to buy an entry level SLR camera,
Here's my 2 centavos worth.
I've been playing with electronic gears for the past 25 years. Those were the days of the film, way before IBM XT and Windows 2.0 was released.
I'm not going to say which brand or model of cameras is better, it's a matter of knowledge, skill and taste. With a working knowledge in PhotoShop, the possibilities are endless.
I've tried the Nikon D70 (extremely fast focusing) and the Canon 300D (great color sensitivity).
I'm just going share with you why I'm a little biased in favor of Canon more than anything else.
The reason is simple.
The service is superb.
Last month is the latest example on their superb aftersales service. Although it is not an isolated experience for me.
My 3mpix point-and-shoot camera stopped working. When I pressed the shutter, nothing registers in the LCD, just blank. The LCD still works, becuase all the previous shots are still viewable.
I was devastated. The camera was my gift to my wife a few years ago. I was planning on selling the unit for P6K maybe (30% of the original value), so I can get her a new one. Then it died.
I was thinking of having to spend some P1500 for the cleaning or maybe more for repairs. I kept knocking myself for bringing it to Fontana and shooting my kids in the pool.
When I arrived at Canon Phils, a cute lady at the counter welcomed me. She told me that the sensor was a defect, and the model happened to be on the recall memo.
They gave me a replacement, a 5 mpix IXUS-i worth P19,995. It took less than 30 minutes and I' was on my way home, with a grin I couldn't erase for the rest of the week.
It's a surprise I'm keeping for my wife. She will be getting a new entry-level point-and-shoot SLR camera this Christmas! and it has got a full manual override even!
Meanwhile, Christmas is still a few months away, so I'm playing with it! ;D
For my professional work, I use my trusty old 300D, it's an entry-level SLR. I replaced the kit lens with a 28-135 IS USM lens. Added a vertical grip, a home-made aluminum stroboflip and an off-shoe cord to make the 550EX flash movable.
For my backup camera, I'm using a Sony DSC-S70, bulky and heavy. Performs great as a point and shoot, but not really a good companion for the 300D for the obvious reasons of being totally different makes! The batteries and the memory card for instance, are totally different!
Here's some tips in buying a camera. 1. Check out the dpreview site. 2. Check that the memory cards are compatible with your cellphone, PDA, and other cameras. The compatibility is not only for convenience, you don't want to end up with so many memory cards that eventually becomes worthless (because manufacturers keep coming out with greater sizes) 3. Join a community of users so you know where to find help, for advice and repairs. 4. Think long-term. Are accessories easily acquired? Is it easy to sell? 5. Most importantly, how are you going to use it? If you got a superior system but you don't have the stamina to lug it all day, it's a waste if it's gathering dust at home.
Just keep shooting! Watch and learn!

Canon announced the release of another entry-level Digi-SLR (^24-Aug-06) EOS 400D or the Rebel XTi, most notably captures 10.1-megapixel images -- leapfrogging it ahead of the higher-priced 8MP Canon 30D and putting it squarely in competition with the Sony Alpha 100 and the new Nikon D80.
Has a much larger LCD screen 2.5" compared to 350 XT's 1.8" LCD. A bunch of upgrades (call it that way) would certainly be so tempting!
Owners of the original EOS 300D / Digital Rebel who avoided the 350D / XT will find it hard to resist the new 400D/ XTi.
Upgrading will get them the 350D / XT’s smaller size, EF-S lens compatibility and much faster startup, along with a considerably higher resolution sensor, bigger screen, improved AF and anti-dust capabilities. They’re all big step-ups and well worth making the move. Do look out for 350D / XT bargains though.
But the real competition would be from Sony's flagship, Alpha A100. It is said that it is set to be one of the EOS 400D / Rebel XTi’s greatest rivals. Both have 10 Megapixel resolution, anti-dust capabilities and use their screens for shooting information. The big advantage of the Sony is of course its anti-shake capabilities, which to have on the Canon would require additional investment in Image Stabilised lenses; the Sony kit lens is also slightly longer.
But another would rival 400D, Nikon D80. I haven't really read a full review of this baby! Just previews.
But it's nice to stay tuned. Time will tell if D80 would really be a nice match-up with 400D.
^5 days, later you've just bought your new toy... You could have wait a li'l longer then got this baby for yourself! Otherwise, I'm hinting here: budget's the culprit ;D ;D ;D Besides, AFIK, it's not that practical to buy that early unless one's a bourgeois in his own right..
Oh, another *S-L-R acronym(?). This is so tormenting for me, LoLz!

take the LRT and get down at the quiapo station. hidalgo street is a hundred meters before the church. try asking at Henry's photo shop. He's the cheapest among the shops there. Oh and all the shops are closed during sunday. and while you're there, go grab some dvds as well. hahaha To be more accurate, you get down at CARRIEDO station, which is connected to ISETANN building. Find the side of the building that is facing SM. Go through SM building and come out on the other side. You will be exactly facing Hidalgo. Drop by Watson's Photo, beside Henry's Photo. Also visit Avenue and Meyers. These are reputable shops, but it pays to ask around first! And be careful! Don't put anything on your breast pockets (salisi gang), or anywhere a pickpocket can easily do their masterpiece. You will be amazed how some people can do wonders with just their hands, without having to upgrade every so often, like the rest of us!

@gadgets, I have a bad experience with my IXUS 400. It's defective even in the forums. It just hangs and erases every pic. I had checked out by Canon and they are charging me 7K to replace the logic board. What model was yours that was recalled? Oh boy, that's my mistake. I never gotten around knowing the model of the old IXUS. I just know it's 3mpix. It was a spur of the moment purchase, gift to my wife. I never used it myself, except the one time when we were at Fontana, where my wife didn't get into the water. Then the death of the camera, and the exchange was a surprise. I was so excited I didn't get the model, else I would go around looking for the same models, and take it to Canon for a new replacement. So sorry to hear about your IXUS. if the forums said it was bad, then the best is to avoid the model in the first place. now that they're charging you an arm and a leg for a logic board replacement, I'm not so keen in doing that. Here's a hint that might lead to something... I would probably write a nice letter to Canon, Phils. explaining how much a Canon believer I am. I heard that Canon Phils is being run by a Japanese, who wants to earn all the pogi points in the world. Think up a heart-wrenching drama and who knows? you just might get a trade-in offer as a special case study! Do it. There is no try... YODA

Ngek! This tip was sooo late. Hihihi... Anyways no problem, I think I got a good deal for the D50. Bought it for P36K. Including the bag, SD card, tripod, filter is P42K. Not bad I guess. Reason why I opted for a Nikon and didn't get the Canon is because I was able to try a friends Canon DSLR. I wasn't really impressed with the picture quality. Indeed canon is the most popular and most advertised digital cam right now. There're also the first one to jump on the digital scene. I just thought the Nikon would produce better quality pics. But that's just what i was thinking when i got the D50. I could be wrong or maybe I was;D

@ gadgets, you're probably the only lucky guy I know... with respect to Canon Philippines Service Center. My old PS70 was a victim of the famous E18, supposed to be rare defect. But I got charged for having them servicing it, on top of that, I have to wait for a month and without a replacement unit. Last November, again, my PS70 succumb to the CCD recall. 2 MONTHS of waiting with no replacement unit. I also know some other people who waited just as long with various models and defects. And to top it all, my PS70 with a new CCD is now pretty much useless, the CCD seems to be very fond of the color yellow. So all the pictures taken with it comes out yellowish. As far as service is concern, Canon Phil. sucks big time. BUT I do agree that there's a couple of cute chick in Canon Phil. Sevice Center. Btw, the CCD recall affects a lot of models and brands. The CCD itself was manufactured by Sony and affected brands such as Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Olympus, Konika Minolta, and Ricoh. Here's a list. Sony CCD recall. Not sure though if the listing was a complete one. P.S. it's "Do or do not. There is no try. - Yoda", it has been my signature for quite some time.

@mountainguitars, I don't think the MegaMall branch qualified as a service center. I have been refused repair by that branch before. The official Canon Phil. Service Center is in Chino Roces, Makati. And to my knowledge, it's THE only service center in the country. Other outlets may receive your equipment but they'll eventually be shipped to Makati branch. I think that it works that way in the province too. But worse, the service center relies on Singapore branch for replacement parts. At least, that is how I was told.
