hi guys. i just want to ask, what's a high resolution picture? what's the criteria? what camera should i get if i want hi res pics in digital format? i use a 4.0 meg panasonic lumix digicam. is it any good? if its not, what's the minimum spec for a fine, compact/small camera. something you can carry around in the outdoors. thanks guys. by the way, since were at it, why don't we post our cameras and the specs. that would be of great help for newbies like me. i like photography but photography doesn't like me, hehehe. ;D here's some of my favorite pics. question while were at it. how come the first pic is bigger than the last 2? i don't tinker around much with my camera so what happened?

hey mont probably because the first pic was set at a higher resolution... most digicams have a small medium and large setting for the photos you take... and when you upload it... they expand it to the size it was indicated 3r 4r etc etc

resolution doesn't depend on the image size. correct me if i'm wrong. resolution is the dpi - dots per inch. the higher the resolution the better the quality. and it is directly proportional too, the higher the resolution, the bigger the image size and the file size. jon - photography is like mountain biking too. it may be a hobby or a profession. either way, you need passion, because if don't have, you'll easily give up because of the price. ouch!!!

Don, you got some interesting questions, though it sound so easy to answer but I'll refer you to wikipedia since its properly explained some of the info you require. Image resolutionDigital PhotographyBetween my wife & me we have 3 digicams, 2 SLR & undetemined number of point & shoots film cameras. Canon G3 Canon A20 Canon A40? Canon A70 Sony U60 my Fave outdoor digicam Still thinking of getting DSLR but what's the point, Elai (my wife) can do wonders with her A20. Maybe the latest waterproof (spell outdoor) version of pentax 6MP

hmm...jon, pictures are supposed to show the emotions of the moment...in the last pic you were caught carrying an umbrella and was a bit shy so it turned out small? bwahahaha! hehehe, actually that's my wife (the one with the umbrella). i was the one taking pics the whole time. pics were taken at mt. pinatubo by the way except for the one in the middle which was taken at white beach in mindoro after a futile attempt to scale halcon. guys, thanks for your replies. janix@, you're correct. you need to have passion if you want to be good at something and thanks to digicams, its been cost effective so far. i hope i don't into editing and stuff like that. just the natural deal: no fuss, no frills point and shoot. i'll go ahead and tinker with my cam and refer to butch's post. i'm actually on the look out for a new digicam that's why i was asking for some info. i've been planning for like the longest time but still, i can't make the move due to ignorance and becoz my digicam has served me well. more pics to come folks.

Nikon!!! can't go wrong. (that's a biased answer by the way) heheh.
I started with Nikon film cameras and still loving them, now i've added digital to my equipments. They are a bit late when it comes to MP compared to Canon and Kodak (i'm talking about DSLR), but im more of the durability and familiarity.
I tried using Canon and got confused. The only drawback is, Nikon is a lot harder to find here in Philippines and Nikon is surely a lot more expensive.
The dealer of Nikon here in Philippines is Columbia Global, 46 Sta. Rosa St. SFDM Q.C.
If you're not really getting deep into photography, but want a flexible camera, get a Compact SLR. these are the cameras that are still SLR but have non-interchangeable lens. That way, you won't worry about dust messing up your sensor if you're using digital.

it really depends... ive been a long time film camera fan, been using one for many years before finally turning digital. I do product photography and have been using film SLR for it... but since i got a DSLR, my film SLR has never been used... i dont know if i can consider it retired... the sentimental value is just too much... my dad published FOUR photography books with the same camera before passing it on to me

yah! it depends. I have film and digital. I'd still say, if your cameras fall below 6mp, film has better quality. But as for me, I love using digital because of the fast workflow and it's cheap... well not really cheap, i meant cheap because you dont have process the film. Still I use both, depends on the client. If he likes film, i give him film, if he likes it on CD or DVD or Emailed i give him digital.

Nikon were a little late but not really. the Kodak DSLRs were using Nikon body. Image quality wise, Canon is kicking butt. I'm a Nikon fan and I have the F90X (film) SLR but looking at the comparison reviews... i'm thinking of crossing over to Canon's side.
mount: to answer your question. photobucket resizes the image u upload depending on how large the size of the file is.

Yeah Nikon is still undeniably great on film, but under digital category..you cant go wrong with Canon. problem is almost every 6 months they're spewing out new models. If your eyeing one model and saving for it... by the time you have the budget, a new model is out in the market. Guess its a bit slower back in the Ph.... here in Jp Same thing happened to our SLRs, my EOS10QD is growing roots, same goes to my wife's Nikon FM10 Another thing, the digital camera's photosensor really plays a big part on the image quality. i.e. Canon's Digic

mmmm yeah. Kodak and Fuji is using Nikon bodies, all they do modify some parts and buttons and change the sensors. Reason why Nikon is late in the image is that they still use CCD instead of CMOS in which Canon and Kodak uses. But the latest Nikon D2x is already using CMOS sensors and its made by Sony for Nikon.
F90x is a great camera, I've tried using one but never owned one. When I was about to buy one, the product is already discontinued, and in Qatar they don't anymore sell discontinued cameras. So i bought F80 instead, it's a scale down of F100 which is a scale down of F5.
Film is still out in the market, in fact Nikon released it's flagship SLR after 10 years after the release of F5.... the new F6!!!!! It's a lot better than F5 (of course).
I love Nikon!!! But I'm getting SRAM X.9 instead of Shimano XT... hehehe

what i really hate about digital is the contrast of the image compared to film!!!!
like in the hair!!!! you can't really bring out those strands of hair in a photo shoot (when you need it for dropouts) compared to film!!!! what i hate on film is the grains!!!!!

MOUNTGUITARS - where was the 1st picture taken? ganda i wanna go there! guys, i was about to ditch my Nikon film SLR, but after reading your posts..... ;D still, since i got my digital i've used my film cam only once, and that was only because my remaining rolls of film were about to expire. i guess that's my answer to your question, ALIEN_SCREAM. i love digital! it's so immediately gratifying and so forgiving of mistakes ;p it's cheaper in the long run too, but then you pay a lot up front. also, it stores better than film (i think....).

WHOOPI- the first pic was taken at the crater of mount pinatubo. you'll love that place. especially once you take a dip. tell me what happens, hehehe ;D . even some of the most experienced swimmers are freaked out. its for you to find out. ;D

Film still beats digital when it comes to quality. But if you're using a medium format camera with a digital back with mps of 20+ and costs $20k++... ouch! but you are assured of the quality. Grains can be eliminated with enough light, and using a less light sensitive film (ISO 200 and below). jon - why? what happens if you swim? you'll melt? hehehe

JON - that's pinatubo?? nice pala, looks like rivendell in lord of the rings heheh. i hear the water's full of sulfur! smells like boiled egg daw?
don't believe COOLANGOT! he's good at composition and that trick with the depth of field (that it took me a while to get the hang of). he says he's a newbie, but i have my suspicions.... ;D
by the way, can anyone verify if it's true that when you store digital images on a disc, you still have to re-save them on new discs every year (?). kasi daw, the quality deteriorates. i haven't really looked closely at my disc-stored images to see if this is true...

True roche, though instead of images, I store data...I have to transfer them to a new disc every 2 years since I notice if I let it stay for longer time, its difficult access them again. Dunno why. And be careful not the scratch the top cover of the disc also. I'm still not sure of the shelf life of DVD disc. I'm using 40 gb portable HD now for my frequently used files. by the way, can anyone verify if it's true that when you store digital images on a disc, you still have to re-save them on new discs every year (?). kasi daw, the quality deteriorates. i haven't really looked closely at my disc-stored images to see if this is true...

That happens? I never experience that. My data files that are stored in cds never detiriorates. Still easy to access. Installers still installs fast. Image quality does not detiriorate. Maybe its the method of storing? My father works in an advertising agency. He brings some works at home, and now it is already 6 years or more. Still I could open it even if the files are 10mb or more.
My DVD experience is a lot different... only 6 months of storage, the files are already inaccessible..... waaahhhh!!!!! maybe its the burner or the DVD?
Anyone of you knows how to preserve the film? I read in some articles that they store the films in special freezers. Can't find how they do it though.

janix, I heard that most pros store their film in freezers. But that's for "pro/high-end" type of films only. whoopi, It's true, burned CDs have a lifespan of 2-3 years, shorter or longer depending on the storage. I do have 7 or 8 year old cds that still work. But why risk it? You can move your images every year or two from an old cd to a new cd siguro. The best data storage I heard is that of tape drives.. but who has a tape drive anyway? heh heh heh

tape drive has a storage life to!!! we use to backup files here in the office on tape drives and after a year i couldn't access them anymore!!!!! i think the best is still the external hard drives!!!!!

Oh sorry, some people classify images as data as well pala, anyway what I call data are those spreadsheets & word docs. As for film storage, I read a lot of this few years back, freezer will be a good substitute to a humidity controlled room. And even the tape drives suffer from mold & mildew growth if not stored properly. Yeah tropics! Found myself checking the digitals cams last saturday. The Canon 30D DSLR is already out on display.... man those baby's huge errr heavy too. Didn't dare touch the 5D and other huge models, kinda too heavy for my taste. End spending time trying out the Kiss Digital with different lens specs. BUTCH, what do you mean by storing data instead of images? how do i do that? oh no!! i have to check all my discs maybe i should just get a portable harddrive na lang din?
