My friends in other group are scheduled to hike Mt. Makulot on Feb 4 and 5. Their take off time is 3:00 am, unfortunately, i cant go at this early, so me and some of my other friends will just follow thru, no specified time and where we will meet yet, but somewhere here in manila, we will meet at 7:00 am going to Batangas. Who ever is interested are welcome to join us. Bring a tent.
This is my first time to hike, im really excited and i want to share this experience with you guys here in PinoyMTBiker.

I've gone up there a few years ago....its a relatively easy climb. The funny thing about this mountain is that there is a sari-sari store up on top.

This is my first time to hike, im really excited and i want to share this experience with you guys here in PinoyMTBiker. teka, bakit napaka aga? you can climb up mt. makulot in less than 3 hours. or baka naman may pupuntahan pa kayo before you scale up mt. makulot? if you find it too early, you can try trekking in the night. i did this before. left the buendia bus station at 8pm and started trekking at 11:30pm. nakarating ako sa campsite ng 2am. tapos mag-isa lang ako sa campsite kasi umakyat ako ng weekday. buti na lang nagbaon ako ng red horse in can, hehehe ;D. or else baka nabaliw ako dun. but if you find this too late in the evening, try leaving manila at 1pm para pag dating nyo sa campsite magdidinner pa lang kayo. dirk is right, may sari sari store nga sa campsite. pero i heard inalis na daw (sabi nila). you might wanna try mt. manabu (lipa batangas). ok ang campsite dun at ganda ng view. walang store sa taas pero may mala-crater na tambakan ng basura, hehehe ;D. sa makulot you have to go to the place na tinatawag na "rockies" and that's where you get a great view. bring sunblock and sunglasses. wear synthetic clothing when you trek, hwag cotton na t-shirt at maong na pantalon ha. keep weight to a minimum, para di ka mahirapan magbuhat ng backpack. its easier to trek if your hands are free from any load. bring a headlamp instead of a flashlight for handsfree twidling in the night. bring a sleeping bag or a heavy fleece jacket. forget about wearing raincoats pag umulan while trekking. sarap magtrek sa ulan. ingatz. grabe, obvious namang miss na miss ko na magbackpack, huhuhu

it's too early maybe because your companions know the rule there. either you go at the break of dawn or in the late afternoon. but unless your skin doesn't hurt under scorching sun.

hmmm...isa pala kayo sa mga nag iingay at nagkakalat ngayon dun tsk tsk tsk.
Honestly...been climbing for long time now, but I really avoided climbing Maculot. Not only there's lot of cases Holdapan but also because the trail is badly eroded. Not considering with its close proximity to Manila, andaming maiingay at nagkakalat sa taas.
Anyway, we cant generalize na rin, baka mas environmentally aware yung grupo sa mga napabalita noon. Since 3 hrs lang pala ang ascent, you can start bit late para nde mainit umakyat.

sarap sumama ah., pwede kaya iakyat yung bike sa campsite ;D, actually my buddies are exploring the possibilties of bringing MTB's on maculot , jesse, try nyo yung grotto route, it's more challenging than the traditional, ala pa kayo gaano kasabay, di na maganda yung tradition trail, pwede ka na magdala ng 4x4 dun, and pag sa grotto route kayo, pwede pa kayo mag camp sa summit, mas konti nga lang ang view . traditional trail will take you up the summit in less than 2 hrs., (depende sa pacing)., at balita ko, di mo na kailangan magdala ng tent at pagkain, pera nalang dalhin mo kasi me 7-11 sa taas hehehe.. gud lak brad sa akyat at ingat., paki kamusta nalang ako sa loner na babae sa rockies (shows up pagkagat ng dilim at before sumikat ang araw) ;D

do you know what bus to ride and where to get down? you can just let your buddies secure the campsite, he he he. anyway, in our case, we normally have 2 IT's prepared. for the recon group, we leave manila around 9:00 or 10:00, have lunch in the market at cuenca, then start trek 13:30. it's going to be bloody hot at the trail but nobody will be racing to the campsite. longest time it takes is us around 2 - 2.5 hours to macatmon (campsite). we would secure the campsite to allow our number of tents. but we setup camp around 16:00 when it's cool enough and the tents will not be oven toasters, he he he. the next group normally leaves manila around 14:00 and arrives around 19:00 at the campsite. btw, since it's your first time, he he he, be ready for really scorching sun. oh and break camp before 8:00 am, when the sun peeks at the summit of maculot, it's going to be really hot at the campsite. that's the time when we are already going down. anyway, get a detailed route but here's how you get there. it's an easy climb and there are makeshift benches along the trail. after the treeline, it's a 15 minute continous cogon grass to the campsite. go with someone who has been ther before, there are 3 forks along the way

goldenboy...after getting a bash of maculot, try mt. daguldol in brgy laiya, san juan, batangas...initial trail will allow you to traverse along a shoreline...honestly, a bikebuddy invited me to bike from san juan town proper to brgy laiya, i might probably go for it since its only approximately 25kms from san juan town proper to laiya, hike to daguldol and swim before mounting your saddle on your way back to san juan. i will post an invite should this day comes...enjoy!

ha ha ha, it's been two years and five months since i last climb makulot. i've been missing some trees gong down already, he he he. i remember my last climb, i had to assist one of the newbies down, it took us 2.5 hours!!!! she couldn't walk because all her toenails are dead already after only 1/3 of the way going down. btw, last time i went there they have this alternate route at the grassland. a bit scary because it's exposed and soil is loose. i think the locals are finally giving thought about the already chest deep trail

i think they tried closing mt. maculot once, but it didn't materialize. i remember there are 3 ways to get to maculot.
1) is the traditional way via Ka Manuel's store. 2) near the registration area, if you're going to the summit first and do a traverse passing through the grotto. 3) via the long stairs towards the grotto.
they can't properly guard the entrances, so anyone can just climb and bypass the registration.

Yah, I heard different stories about Mt. Maculot, if I can do something not to pursue on this climb i'll do it but I just hitch in to this group, they are the one who wants to go there, maybe because they'll acompany a lot of newbies including me.. I hope I wont be disappointed in hiking/seing mt. maculot, coz first impressions lasts. This is my first hike kasi, i find it not interesting doing hiking, i would probably not to climb anymore.. hope this will not be my last..

brad, bring a good camera you'll like the scenery when you go to the rockies oh yeah prepare for a little rock scrambling i was able to bring up more than 30 newbie climbers in separate occasions and all of them wanted another hiking trip. tip, when you're in the rockies, look at the volcano island of Taal. right across that is Tagaytay ridge if you get there with good visibility, you'll be able to see the 4 metal plates (or maybe a radar) that's situated in Tagaytay
