I saw this banner ad pop-up while in the lounge... www.cebuanas.com. Am I a prude? I found the site a bit exploitative after reading the tagline "Where Filipinas Meet Foreign Men". Not that I wouldn't want to meet a few of the featured women in the gallery, many are beautiful. (BTW I was viewing the gallery purely for the sake of research ) On the other hand, I'd like to see Tofi's pic in there... the one where he's in a dress. he might get some responses ;D

BO, it's admirable of you to be disturbed. once upon a time an extraordinary Filipina mom named Noemi discovered to her anger and shame that if you googled the word "Filipina" the search engine would vomit a list of mail-order and porn sites. she then started an online campaign to take back the word "Filipina" and return it to its proper context. the campaign has since caught fire. many proud Filipinas were joined by others from the opposite sex and from different nationalities, in celebrating the sexiness of the Filipina outside the environment of exploitation and degradation. it's heartwarming to read male bloggers like this guy talking about what filipinas should mean online www.bayanihanblogs.com/90/what-filipina-should-mean-online/it's an ongoing work, and everyday there are successes and defeats. today is not a good day to google "filipina". still, you will see results up there that point to sites like The Filipina Women's Network, which is run by Noemi's sister Lorna. try "sexy filipina" though and you will see a host of sites that have successfully restored dignity to the many sexy, but not sex-starved or sex-peddling, Filipinas. read about the whole campaign at filipinaimages.com/

also, purely for the sake of research ;D do real owners of the pix know, or their managers, that their photos are being used in the site? i think most of the pix there are taken (w/o permission) from legitimate modeling sites, friendsters, myspace, etc...

hmm...try to google filipino then you will get a different result...may i ask who invented the word filipina? are we the only country with gender specific adjective for nationality? italians are just italians...americans are just americans...the brits, britons, british, english and dami but still not gender specific. changes the complexion of the problem significantly isnt it? well at least for me. dont worry peeps, the brazilian word is non-gender specific but try "googling" it. ;D

the only example i can think of LAMOK, is latino/latina. except that its more of an ethnic/race indentifier than a nationality.

Roche, thanks for the story about Noemi. I got chills reading about her campaign (positive chills with a good feeling) and stories on the other links. I think I have a problem with mail order brides, I understand that it has become an economic necessity for some, but I don't have to like it. I don't have a problem with inter-racial marriages... many of my friends have bi-racial kids, my sister's husband is jewish-german (I like to tease my neices about being flip-jap or jewish-american princess), I have cousins that are half irish and others half african-american. Our family reunion would resemble the united nations.
All I know is that some of these mail order relationships are abusive. I guess that's what bothers me. When I see the faces, I see Filipinas... sisters, cousins, neices, aunties, as if I were related. It hits closer to home.

LaMok - quite different results between "a" and "o". i guess it will take more work to take back "filipina"
last thing on my mind was "brazilian wax" but The Brazilian Girls rock. I recommend their music.

BO, i feel the same. when marriage is commoditized via mail-order it bothers the heck out of me. interracial unions are beautiful i think, improves the natural selection in my opinion

by the way, BO, a bit off topic perhaps, but when you get a chance read through Noemi's website, www.aboutmyrecovery.com. she lost a 6-year-old son from drowning and went through years of pain (how do you heal from something like that?). she's an extraordinary, strong and smart woman.

allegra: taken out of context, neither your modified tagline or cebuanas' has negative connotation. Given historical and anecdotal evidence, your tagline is not exploitive... it would be just another website to meet others. From what I understand the exploiter is generally from an economically rich country and the victim from a relatively less rich economic situation. In most cases it's men are exploiting women and even children. What would it be like if roles were reversed? How would you feel? I would like to see a site with a tag-line such as yours... to show the world that Filipino men make good husbands, lovers and friends. We're no different than other men throughout the globe. As whoopi mentions, marriage become commoditized, and love becomes secondary or even non-existent. Does good ever come out of mail order situations? Yes, I'm sure there are many healthy relationships. But does the good outweight the negative? I don't know.

Wow! Besides her strength and intelligence, she has great business acumen, a strong desire to succeed, highly talented and driven. After reading some of her blogs her amazing personality comes through. I admire this person and could only wish to possess a small portion of her fortitude. I have never had to deal with this type of a loss and can't even imagine what she has gone through. She seems to be coping with her loss as anyone would, in their own way and in a method and time appropriate for each. Does one ever fully recover from such an experience? I don't know. Although, I don't think it will diminish her talents and her capacity to achieve.

@tofi: I'm glad you have such a strong sense of self. Few people can make fun of themselves and fewer still can take others making fun of them. I only pick on you because you can handle the ribbing. Besides, what would the forums be without you? much less interesting that's for sure. If only some of your humor would rub off on me. I don't know how to make people laugh.

also, purely for the sake of research ;D pixso how far back into the galleries did you research? Or did I miss the one you found? she's very memorable. You're probably right, I'm sure many were lifted from other sites. When you find the true identity of this pic, you'll make contact just to let her know her pic is being misused. Not that you would want to meet such a gorgeous babe, right? ;D How many of these do you think are legit? None? www.cebuanas.com/filipina_pics2/
