can someone please help me.. i plan to bring my gf to Siargao(X-mas present) dis December. Kaso lang i'm totally clueless about the place. Alam ko lang it's a place for surfing..can it also be ideal for just going to the beach? Checked out local airlines.. cebu pacific has the cheapest plane fare pero manila-butuan; butuan-manila(i think this province is the nearest sa Siargao.) Does anyone know how long will it take to get from Butuan to Siargao island..or OK na ba just to tour Surigao? Detail please.. TIA!

Hi aidz,
According to my wife's officemates who frequent Siargao, it's not for beach lovers. Only surfers will appreciate it. Don't know their standards but this is what I heard from them. My wife and I were supposed to tag along (my wife loves the beach) but upon learning this, we backed out.
More comments may come but I HTH...

hi AIDZ! swerte naman ni DIVALICIOUS heheh. i know there's a flight from cebu to surigao, maybe that's faster. from surigao you take a fastcraft to siargao, about 45 minutes i think. siargao itself doesn't have calm beaches, but the beachfront resorts are beautiful if you want to just lounge around. if you've the budget, Pansukian Resort is love-ly (they've a website i think). we stayed at Villa Ernesto, reasonable, with hammocks, restau, and great view of sunset. contact sim castrence 0919 375-0399. don't know if that number still works, haven't tried it in over a year. from Villa Ernesto, you can boat to Dako Island or Naked Island for really really fine beaches. Naked Island is just a sandstrip, powdery white sand, no shade though, but picturesque and if you're lucky you can have it all for yourselves. Dako Island is nearby, has picnic tables for rent, lots of shade. there's another island whose name escapes me at the moment, it's a bit far off from these two, but i remember it had lots of coconut trees and a small village. the beach is also fine there. sim castrence can arrange the boat trips for you. and then if you have time, i really recommend sohoton cove. it's a much longer boat ride in the open sea but it's worth it. they time the entrance when it's low tide so the boat can pass through the mouth of a cave into the lagoon. crystal clear shallow waters, lots of caves for exploration, lots of rock formations to dive from and into the water, and there's a jellyfish lake there where you can swim with stingless jellyfish (not as spectacular as palau but a treat nevertheless). i'll have to dig up some numbers for you. there's a travel agency that arranges all this but i can't recall the name heheh. there are some pics of siargao here: new.photos.yahoo.com/si_roche_ito/album/576460762361581725

about malapascua, divers enjoy it more than beach-lovers. and it's getting horridly touristy there lately. a part of the island is full of garbage logon beach resort has it's own strip of secluded beach though some of the cottages are a bit rundown. malapascua exotic dive resort also has a clean beach front which is away from the main beach. blue coral (or something blue, can't recall heheh) is also okay with its own view deck and a mini strip of secluded beach at the back. i heard nearby bantayan island is much much better, less touristy and with better beaches, though i haven't been there.

RE: Malapascua We visited this island a few months ago. Stayed at Exotic Beach Resort. In my opinion, it is beach bum worthy. But the island is famous for its dives. Most of the visitors here are foreigners who want to see the thresher shark. The island also has a few snorkling sites, which we did try. It was also my first time to snorkel, so I did enjoy a bit. They have a japanese ship wreck and the usual corals. They also have a cliff jumping area (just be sure to jump before 11am, scary tide afterwards). Also, they have a trail from the south of the island to the north for those who like trekking (you can rent a motorbike too). We also did island hop to calanggaman, which they say is now owned by noli de castro. Basically, I like this place except for the long commute from the airport to the northern tip of cebu (3-4hours). Cost me and my girlfriend around 15K for 3 days and 2 nights (non-aircon room + food trip). Availed of the 'piso' flights of cebu pacific at the time. To know more about the place, you could search the virtual tourist website and read the newly released lonely planet (around P1.7K at fully booked or just read about it in the bookstore). We plan to go to siargao next year maybe. Sorry, my post is kinda OT.

yup siargao has great long white sand beaches as well. kind or reminded me of boracay before it got "developed". lots of cheap places to stay too. i remember in the carenderia in the bayan where everyone ate, the manang's daughter was cute too!
here's a tip though, dont leave your boardshorts outside your cottage to dry. they get stolen!

one quiet night we were at the siargao surfing company, and we heard this deep rumble coming from the sea. it was so dark we couldn't see if anything was coming. this was months after the asian tsunami so everyone got agitated. then someone said, it's just the sound of the mindanao trench, the second deepest water in the whole world. i thought that was cool and awesome, like being near the belly of a beast.
