our song for this uhfternoon is a special request from a great man working in the great lands of the great middle east! da man himself!

this is a song by joni mitchell. her recording first appeared on the album clouds, released in 1969 and later on the album of the same name.

it is one of Joni Mitchell's best known songs, with "big yellow taxi", "woodstock" and "a case of you". it was written in march 1967, inspired by a passage in henderson the rain king by saul bellow.

judy collins made the first commercially released recording of the song in 1968 shortly after mitchell wrote it. collins' version reached #8 on the u.s. pop singles charts and won a 1968 grammy award for best folk performance. fairport convention recorded the song as a demo in 1967. the band's recording did not become available until 2000, however, when it appeared on the guv'nor vol 4 by ashley hutchings.

rolling stone ranked this song #170 on their list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.

our song for this morning is the 29th single by duran duran, and the first official single from the album medazzaland. in 1997, the single and album were released only in the united states, and was not issued as a single in the united kingdom until january 1999 on the back of the late 1998 release of the compilation album greatest. the song is a direct tribute to the 1968 roger vadim film "barbarella", from which the band took their name. it has been touted as the first song available for digital purchase/download on the internet, however, this is heavily disputed as songs had been available for download and purchase on the internet since 1992. dozens of different mixes were created from the song. a dom t mix exclusive to the internet was available for download in the u.s. for 99 cents. this pioneering move annoyed many american retailers as they saw it as infringing on their retail territory and they either refused to stock the album, or provided very little, or sometimes no, promotion of the disc.

our song for this afternoon is a song performed by the great michael jackson, and was released posthumously on may 2, 2014. the song, reworked from a 1983 demo track originally composed by jackson and the great paul anka, was the first single released from jackson's second posthumous album, xscape. two versions of the single were developed. the first was a solo version produced by american record producer john mcclain and dutch record producer giorgio tuinfort. the second version was a duet featuring justin timberlake, and produced by timbaland and j-roc, which received positive reviews from music critics. first worked on as a demo, jackson co-produced the song during a 1983 recording session with anka. the original version only featured jackson's vocals, finger snaps and a piano, played by anka. in 1984, anka sent the song to johnny mathis, who recorded a new version of the song with revised lyrics by anka and kathleen wakefield. mathis' version made it on his 1984 album, a special part of me. in 2006, jackson's demo leaked online. during the 2013-2014 recording sessions for the xscape album, the song was given a revision as a disco-sounding track.
