Hey peeps...
Ever since I started mountain biking, most of my excess (and even beyond) funds have been for bike upgrades which has resulted to ignoring my car.
Since christmas bonus is around the corner, I'm thinking of "investing" on my car audio set up instead. I think I've spoiled my bike enough.
my budget is a bit steep though. I can't go beyond 30k.
I'm not looking a for a solid "bayo." Just decent sound quality for my pleasure and not to wake up the entire village block.
So if you had a virtual 30k and your sound system is completely stock, how will you spend it? and which shop would you go to?
I'm hoping this will include changing my head unit as well.
BTW, I drive a vios.

my suggestion , put a pair of quality separates up front, use the stock speakers for rear fill, an 8 or 10 inch sub in the rear, power it up with a five channel amplifier with a built in crossover, make sure you use quality speaker and power wires, any decent shop can do this setup, i dont have any idea which shop to go to since its been a while that i had my car setup too. its the small things that make a good setup. and never make the rear fill louder than the front coz our ears are design to hear forward, not backward ;D

The steps to get a good car audio system is rather simple:
1.) get good car speakers
The biggest factor in terms of sound quality are naturally the speakers. However, most car speakers are @#$% when it come to sound quality since most are designed either with background listening (read: no details) or with bayo (trans: fake sounding bumpy bass) and kalansing (trans: annoyingly sharp metallic sounding treble) in mind. There is no need for 2 pairs or more speakers inside a car (unless you want 5.1 surround sound for a car home theater system) - just get a pair of good front seps or coax speakers and that is more than enough to provide ear splitting SPL inside the puny air volume inside any vehicle. In fact combining different front and rear speakers can result to worse sound than just fronts or rears on their own. The good brands are Focal, Dynaudio, SEAS Lotus, DLS, Morel, Nakamichi, and Peerless. They have entry level models that cost from around P10k I think.
2.) get a good head unit HU preferably with EQ
This is the easy part since there are many decent and affordable HUs from Pioneer, Sony Xlod, Alpine, Clarion (my personal preference), Kenwood etc. However - if you want real quality HU ... they won't be cheap (hint: easily more than your whole system budget) and they won't come with any built in amplification either. The problem nowadays is the scourge of integrated @#$% head units that get packaged with cars. It is not easy to replace them because they are integrated to the dash without some fabrication of sorts - and the center console might not look as good with a standard HU. I suspect the VIOS has an integrated HU right?
3.) Add amplifier/s and EQ
Most HUs come with amplifiers but they are WEAK amplifiers that lack current and have poor dynamics. If you decide to use high quality speakers - they will need a good high fidelity amplifier. My favorite solid state car audio amplifiers are made by Audison. But I prefer vacuum tubes or tube hybrid amplifiers like Butler Audio. You can look for used Audisons to power your 30k budget system. As for EQ ... find a used Audio Control EQL. It's a winner.
3.) use good wiring (read: NOT car audio stuff but home audio stuff)
Most car audio cables are all bling (trans: designed for show, not for sound). Also, avoid having your car audio wired in Banawe or some cheap shop - they usually wire speakers out of phase, or with inverted left and right channels! Use big gauge power cables to the amplifier/s!
4.) Deaden your doors, and remove everything that you don't need inside the car that rattles and makes noises

To deaden your doors or roofs or seal your car or house airtight (for sound or airconditioning considerations), you can visit the GASKET SPECIALIST & GADGETS Store. It's right in the middle of Noodletown! Look for the sexy manager of the store. Uh... Guess who?

What HU can you recommend 8k? Preferably with an ipod port (if it's not pushing it) and are there amplifiers that cost around 4k? what's a good brand? thanks ;D

sound setup...back then my car have a mtx12" speaker, alpine amps, pioneer HU... but now...i advise get a nice head unit, then upgrade to a nice 3-ways or mids and twits or if you're really on the buff of sounds....get high ends...but be sure to have them connected to shops that are really pros on sounds... or better yet you can ask these people...you might get some big interest in them too.... www.girlracersclub.com/grc/they're all girls...they host car shows...join races, do mechanic....and pretty sila...

Suggestion lang po. Honestly 30k is not bad. As we always say, invest on a good Head Unit. Alpine and Pioneer are the best choice (for me). Upon reading your post, i think you should go for SQ (sound quality) since you don't want the BIG BANG BOOM BOOM . a good HU will cost you around 9k including installation (Pioneer 6050ib is not bad 4v preout and USB plug included, no need for CD's). Next would bve investing in a 4 channel amp. with your budget i think best amp you can get is a JBL 75.4ii would cost you about 7k (2nd hand). Then, invest on a good pair of separates, i'm a satisfied DLS user so i love my own. DLS MS6 cost about 5k (2nd hand bang for the buck!). Next would be the sub, buy a JBL 1202 or p1222 with sealed or slot port box (around 6k) loook for a DD1010 if you can. Summary: HU: Pioneer 6050 = 9k Amp: JBL 75.4 = 7k Seps: DLS MS6 = 5k Sub: JBL = 6k Labor, wirings etc = 5k TOTAL = 32k (add ka nalang konti) Not bad for a 30k setup. for more info and 2nd hand items for sale please check out the link. www.kotseaudioclub.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=16&sid=8a45823cfb90c2357a3639d7a9b451a4KAC is the first car audio enthusiast club in the phils.
