i've been using my nokia 6600 for years. i've been very reluctant to upgrade to a different model. i've been itching to switch brands but i really don't want to learn a new technique in texting. querty keyboards are too small and ineficient for me. my phone took a few hard crashes but it keeps on ticking (electronically). after a drunken spat, one time, i was backriding on a motorcycle and my phone took a tumble at 60kph. after rebooting, it still works. ;D
i'm also looking for a convergence tool to simplify my necessities. can't wait for the ultimate phone / cam / mp3 player that's also sturdy to take out on trails and night rides.

I'm still using my good old Palm Tungsten T, which I got 2nd hand by the way... never really liked those all-in-one stuffs (i.e. PDA phones)... found them too difficult to use as a phone, especially for sending SMS... i don't have faith in windows ce what I liked in Tunsgten - simple, fast, easy to use, gets the job done...

i have the Treo 650 now. I used to have the XDA mini. No complaints with either. Probably just a question of preference. The Treo has a keypad, no such thing on the XDA. Palm software v. windows mobile.

pda daw o I am very happy with the PDA phones I had. well, not 100% happy, just that i've relied on my PDA sooooo much. it started with a Nokia 9210i (technically not a PDA) i inherited from my dad because he doesn't know how to use it it's got the reliability of a Nokia. simple interface. does what it's told. i use it for taking notes, blogging, installed a super-calculating app, games. it's really a gem to navigate on a PDA phone but the 9210i is a little outdated. I need wifi. i want stereo sound and mp3/video playback. a camera would be nice. and apps apps APPS! a dictionary! engineering calculator! e-wallet! the 9210i had none of these after rigorous internet research, looking for a device that will fullfill my needs, i got an o2 xda II mini and it did what i wanted. it remembered my out-of-the-blue ideas (touch-screen notes scribbling is a GEM. very quick). it reminded me of my homework for the week. my upcoming exams. i could cram a report on it. i used it as my USB flash drive (yes you can do that). i used it as a GBA emulator (playing pokemon yeah). with an SD wifi adapter i could email emergency files to my groupmates. people say the o2 mini is really for the business people, but was perfect for my student life! but the OS, windows mobile 2003 (second ed, phone edition) DISAPPOINTS, just like all other windows operating systems. it hangs often. the interface is bad. the alarms are unreliable... if you are computer illiterate you would HATE this device. you really have to research the net to MAKE THE DEVICE USABLE, to make it reliable, to make it user friendly, and to get the most out of it. the thing I love most about my PDA is the dictionary and notes application. really handy if you are a student. an engineering student. whose mind is not defragged and best of all, i could still text around with "nokia-style thumb-texting" we all know and love. with additional apps, the phone features/usability of the PDA is not that bad, really you just have to know what you want and where to look for it. blimkeys and the latest upgrade... a Dopod 838 ;D why? it's got built-in wifi, the new OS (windows mobile 5), it's small enough for my taste AND it's got the slide-out keyboard! the keyboard will come in handy when i'm blogging or writing a report. the thing with keyboards is that thoughts from your mind transfers to the PDA more fluidly compared to, say, tapping on a virtual keyboard using a stylus. still has a camera. and i bring (abuse) it with me on trail rides. still on one sliding piece i'd say. i'm too lazy to change sim cards, and the camera is very handy for those memorable trail scenery and just like any windows device, it's got a lot of annoyances that the user has to solve/deal with first. like the unreliable alarm clocks. i've been late several times and been left behind by my bike buds because of this. it's also got the screen alignment problem where the stylus taps shift every so often. but still i couldn't live without it. i keep saying this to people on the market for a new cellphone instead of buying a cellphone, an iPod (video), a flash drive, a game boy advance, BUY A PDA PHONE AND GET ALL THESE IN ONE PACKAGE

bobbye - since you're looking for a smartphone, the Treo 650 is what I would get. but I don't believe in all in one gadgets too much. so much to lose if that device fails or gets lost. i like redundancy
jaymz - Treo 650 pa rin. a lot of apps that you can load onto it. and I have a Palm specific cycling program that you can use to monitor your rides, frequency and effort level. also monitors weight, bmi, etc.

the most entry-level PDA phone i could think of WITH WIFI is the xda IIs... it's got a slide-down keyboard so text input won't be a frustrating experience. its got all that you said
if you want a more entry-level unit, get a really simple xdaII and get an SD wifi adaptor.
what i like about the microsoft pda-phones is the GAZILLIONS of programs you could put in it. there are very few developers that make programs to run on the sony-ericcson OS (symbian)

technically speaking, Treos are smartphones, they lack the touchscreen-stylus. Treos have always had the touchscreen. They are full-fledged PalmOS devices, and can run almost all available Palm apps. The one and only thing I miss on my Treo650 is WiFi. But then again I almost always have my notebook with me when I'm anywhere that might have WiFi, so it's not really a problem.

What would be a nice entry level PDA fone? Price? Not a computer techie here, but the unit can do excel, word files, with camera, wifi? My gf just got a free Nokia N73 from Globe, which seems to be the ultimate music (mp3, FM radio)/camera (Carl Zeiss lens, and flash!) phone yet. It also has software for syncing/reading MS Office docs. No WiFi, unfortunately. I've had my Treo 650 for over a year, and although I have Documents to Go installed, I've never needed to do Excel, Word or Powerpoint on it. I did read the last 3 Harry Potter books (in pdf format) on the Treo though.

i stand corrected... i saw treos with touchscreen... the thumbboard threw me off BTW the new Treos don't run the PALM OS anymore, unfortunately (treo 700w/750 i think). they run on windows CE now No, there are now two options for the OS. The Treo 700w/wx run Windows mobile, while the 700p still run Palm OS. I think they want to gradually wean users off the Palm OS. This may not be a bad thing, as the strength of the Palm OS was its simplicity and small footprint. This allowed Palm to use less storage and memory in their devices. It had a significant weakness though, in that it couldn't multi-task properly. Applications had to "fake" multitasking. These days with embedded memory and storage costs dropping, the small footprint isn't an advantage anymore. Everything's now about the features, applications, and connectivity. I think it's great that consumers now have a choice. Now I'm just waiting for a Linux version to come out that runs both Windows Mobile and PalmOS apps.

i'm pretty much satisfied with my o2 xdalls.... it has everything... presentation applications (which serves as my back-up during my training conducts and presentations), and off course.... wi-fi! whats kinda sad though, is i got it a 512mb sd card for php1,500.00 when i bought it two years ago. when i decided to upgrade it recently to a 1gb sd card, it only cost me php520! jeez! hehehe! during rides, i use my old reliable and classic treo 600 :-) curahee!

I was one of the early adaptors to the Palm. I started with the old Palm Pilot Professional in 97. Then upgraded to the Palm III in 99. This was later upgraded to the Palm Vx and eventually the Tungsten in 2002.
After that I went into the smartphone arena. Since Palm did not have a good and reliable solution then with the Handspring, I switched to the Sony Ericsson P800 Symbian platform, then upgraded to the P900, then the P910 and just last year to the new P990i. Everything went well until the P990i. Since I was a MAC user, integration with my laptop's calendar and contacts was non-existent. I tried to wait for the firmware upgrades but it did not solve the iSync problem (I even tried 3rd party solutions by they were not convenient).
This May I finally gave up and went back to the Palm with a Palm Treo 650. It's HEAVEN!!! Everything works as before. I even found that my old archived software and data synced immediately. I was also able to activate Graffitti 2 to work. What can I say? It may be an old platform and the hardware does not have the wiz-bang of the SE P990i but the applications work! I have everything I need:
Datebk5 Worldmate Pro Salling Clicker Pocket Tunes Graffitti Anywhere Technician Vcard Manager
I am really happy with the TREO 650 ... I'm waiting on the Apple Iphone. It might be my next phone.
