Hey People,
Anybody here have any experience with Dell laptops? Specifically the Inspiron 6000D... I want to know if you had problems with it like, How long did it last before it broke down? How's Dell's after sales service here in the country? Any info will be greatly appreciated.

We currently use Dell Latitude here in the office. I've been using mine for about 2 years now I think. No problems hardware-wise. A bit on the heavy side. Have issues with the battery life also. Don't know what I did to it but I get less than an hour when unplugged.

Julio hi Julio! i work as Tech Support for Dell Inspirons in US (and Dimensions as well) outsourced locally, and this is how i see the 6000 model objectively: - mainstream aka mid-range portable to date (2 GHz P4 CPU + 2Mb L2 Cache, 15.4" TFT widescreen LCD, PCMCIA + SD card slot, Bluetooth + WiFi + FireWire ready, front media controls, DVD+/-RW drive, no integrated floppy drive) - popular model aka "mabenta" in US market - value for money @ US$ 700 now, my personal aka subjective side: - due to number of users (of all sorts who have diff manners of using laptops), we're getting numerous tech calls as well (e.g., will not resume from hibernate mode, distorted video, failing HDD and not turning on) like marcs, i'm also using a Dell Latitude (c610 model) for years as well (it's my mom's PC in office)... it has good (LCD, peripherals, performance) and not-so-good (lockups, non-responsive keyboard) sides... but a reliable system and will last for those who will use it as designed (for business purposes and not too much on PC games) for after-market support here in phils, like other brands (HP compaq, IBM, Acer), it has no specific support centers for small/personal buyers (but has its own outsourced technicians for business and gov't bulk orders, AFAIK) hope that helps regards,

I agree with the comments above. Dell is a good brand but as with the inside info that we have as Dell tech (now formerly), unfortunately the 6000 has more than it's fair share of issues. Besides that, there is no local support for local consumer use. Only for corporate accounts. Local support is one of the biggest consideration in getting a portable.
It's predecessor (inspiron 600m) is of similar spec but has the least if none at all when it comes to hardware issues. The model is more than a year old but is still sold by dell due to demand and great customer reviews. It's smaller and lighter too. The wider screen of the ins 6000 is not necessary when it has onboard video processing unlike the 600m which uses ATI Radeon 9000.
Bottom line is as much as I like Dells, your better off getting a portable with full local support. (IBM and HP has repair depots in Glorietta.) I hope this helps.

very well said goodboybrionne & marvs idol_julio, aside from 600m, the Inspiron 700m is still shipping in US market for the same reason: durability and performance in a compact form... but the lack of consumer support (spare parts and repair facility) locally knocks us here again there are some "3rd-party" portable PC repair shops, like in 2nd/F CyberMall in Eastwood Libis, who also sells some Dells, Sony's and HP Compaq's with minor spare parts like batteries, keyboards, AC adapters, etc. ('til supply lasts, probably) good luck

Thanks for all the replies guys! I'll most likely be getting my notebook in Australia since the reason I need one is I might study there for 10 months. I really like the looks of the Inspiron 6000 and the specs for the price are pretty good when compared to other well-known brands. I'm assuming dell support in Australia should be pretty good and warranties are only good for 1 year, I think the inspiron would be a pretty good choice for me hehe. My next choice would probably be an IBM R52 or 51. BTW, Cooltoyz in greenhills sells dell laptops at prices competitive with the prices on the net and they offer 1 year warranties...
