sourcing a dabomb single speed conversion kit, or any other SS kit in the same price range. I'm setting up a SS indoor trainer for the mrs. Surly is nice but just to costly for the intended purpose. Pls pm or text 0922-8245464

if it's only for indoor training, why don't you just keep it in one gear? OR, if the Mrs is set on riding a SS indoors, remove the front derailleur and front shifter, shorten the chain to the appropriate length for the gear she wants to use, lock the rear derailleur to that cog, and remove rear shifter...

At first that was the plan. But, since i don't have the shifters and derailleurs in the first place, I thought i'd save a bit and just go with the ss set-up at the onset.
Btw, just curious...by locking a rear der, do you mean using the limit screws? Lets say I'd like to use the middle gear, can the screws "reach" that far?

just use the high gear adjustment/limit screw to stop the derailleur right below your cog. Alternatively, if the bike is going to be used on a trainer, you can get away with a ghost ring (however, if this bike will get road/dirt use, the ghost ring will not work for very long)...
