i saw a couple of folks use wing, shaped handle bars on their SS rigs. i just want to know why. does it really help? in what way?
a mary bar is quite expensive though. does anybody know of a cheaper version? i dont mind the weight as of the moment. i just want to know if it helps/works.
TIA

yep saw the marys the day they came in at sabak they cost around 2.8K, pretty darn light for such a lot of handle bar. People love these because the regressed hand position provides additional leverage compared to the typical straight or riser, oddly enough I thought the mary bar kinda looked like the handle bars on mamacharis (japanese utility bikes) or the easy riders of days gone by.

It's a matter of personal preference, but most people find the Mary's comfortable (myself included). If you need more rise, or a wider bar for more leverage, the Mary's may not fit the bill.
Set up is crucial though. One tip I can give is angling the ends of the bars slightly downward, towards your rear dropouts. I've been rocking Mary for almost two years now, and I love her.
If you see me out on trails, and are curious about the bars or the bike, please let me know, I'd gladly let you test ride my bike.
Happy trails!

TIA Jon, This bar is not for you if you are concerned about the weight.... it's about 300 grams, hehehe.... ;D ;D ;D Does it work? Yes, it works. Just follow Agu's tip on how to set it up and once you get it dialled, you'll benefit from the "natural" hand position while riding especially during climbing and going downhill. During our last ride in Chi Ma Wan, pinoymtbiker.proboards7.com/index.cgi?board=trailgallery&action=display&n=1&thread=3732 I was being laughed at by some local young riders who doesn't have any idea on what a Mary Bar is. They thought I brought my "pamalenke" SS bike to ride on the trail. ;D ;D ;D

Yup, here's my setup for reference... Though I've found that running them inverted feels better (for me at least, your mileage may vary) Same setup tip running them right side up or flipped, though: Slightly angle the tips of Mary towards your rear dropout. Remember to do it in small increments too. agu

(not the expensive jeff jones h bars please). I also went ahead and ordered the niner wtb dual duty rims from ross. That's the cheapest rims I found on the net hehehe

wtb dual duty 29ers? cool! how much did they go for? No Titec H-bars here yet, but that may change in the future Titec has the license to produce an Alu version of Jeff Jones' bar.

They'll give me the final price tomorrow. Universal cycles listed the price at $32.99 and the laser disc at $53. I've also called YKK and they told me that the shipment of 29'er tires will arrive next week. Forgot to ask which brands though (most probably kenda's and wtb's)

guys, thanks for your replies. but since i really find it awkward to use a mary bar, is there a cheaper alternative so that i could just experiment for the mean time? im really not sure if i want to let go almost P3k for something i might not like later on. i haven't seen any fellow SSers din kasi who uses this bar after the first couple of times i saw it. so i guess not a lot of people into SS use it. any suggestions? where to get one (alternative) and how much? thanks. btw, weight is not a concern, hehe.

I ve been using a mid-rise Easton Monkeylite which the orig owner unfortunately cut to 23.5 inches only + ST Lites barends (the one that has about2 inches forward and 1 inch in the rear..making a T with your bars)..this setup provided me with the leverage needed for the short steep uphills
I want to try a Mary Bar though

It all boils down to personal preference - what works for you - bicycles are supposed to be extensions of our bodies. After all we're both its passenger and its engine!

in case you guys haven't seen it yet, there's a digital edition of Dirt rag on their website. one of the articles is about the adjustments you'd have to make to your bike fit if you use alternative bars (i.e. not regular flats or risers). it's on page 90 (92 on the viewer). dirtragmag.com/web/article.php?ID=921&category2=flash

thanks for the link, King...
There are a lot more 'alt-bars' popping up in the market...not just from On-One or Jones either...let's hope they land on our shores soon

i saw a couple of geared exile 29ers at grantrail. you won't be alone, jason ay i don't have a 29er yet. was inquiring whether a mary bar would look ok on a regular 26er hardtail with front shock and gears. will definitely try the mary bar with my hardtail if i get to find one. and if i do get a 29er ss, the mary bar would go on this. hehehe

here's my friend's Voodoo Hoodoo, with gears, front shocks and Mary bars Doesn't look too bad (rides pretty nicely too!). Since the snap was taken, tires have been changed to Nevegals, cranks to LX and saddle to something more cushy (Speed V)... Feel free to ask me questions
