How difficult (or easy) is it to find 29" tires and tubes here? If I were to go single speed, it would be on a 29er, just to make it special . It's one nice bike, though the gearing is a bit on the heavier side... so is the price. 33 x 20 would be nice.

i think you can use a 26" tube. tires would be hard to find though.

you can use a 26" tube with no problems
as for 29er tires, YKK will be bringing in some next month, when I dropped by (and saw the Exile 29er) in Cebu last month.

its a fun bike, first time on a SS and am enjoying it. funny though, the model I got had a 33x18 gear which is better than 33x16. looking at getting lighter hubs and better brakes in the future

my brad got one too. I dig the geometry!
as Manitou said, hubs and brakes are the two things that would be on an upgrade list (as expected, based on its bang-for-the-buck price!)
Ride on!

I just saw two Jamis Exile 29ers at Grantrails today..one single speed (Manitou's) and the other geared (Angelo B.'s)
NIce but the geometry s intimidating . and the fork ! oh my the rigid fork is good for a 31er if theres a wheel for that
why is the fork like that ...a 29er wheel not tall enough? kinda crazy when you see about 4 inches of air between the tire and the lower crown of the fork
well not that I can ride a 29er (Im too short for it)

I know two other guys with Exile29ers (my brad and my friend Benj)... The Exile29 can accommodate 100mm front shocks (for 29ers of course), and I think the slender tubes give it an illusion of height... As for riding a 29er, if the bike is properly designed, even a 5' tall lady can pedal around on one (this was a custom ride in the States of course). A lady friend of mine took my Voodoo out for a spin - she's close to 5'6", and my frame was a 17". So a 15" or 16" would suit her (or you) fine Try it, you'll like it! hehe

I'd be more interested in getting the disc brakes

what height minimum can 29ers still accommodate? what's wrong with hayes sole hydraulics? seems like nobody likes them. kawawa. and can you put road bike tires on the stock wtb wheelset? thanks!

jason-
minimum height is dictated by frame size and design. best to check out geometry specs of the manufacturer's website to find out. As I said above, 29ers are coming in smaller sizes, with little or no compromises on fit, effectively dispelling the "29ers are for tall people" notion.
As with ANY bike, 29er, 700c, 26er, 26.5er...if it's properly designed, it will fit.
I'm not sure road tires are wide enough, but if you can compare the rim widths (inner lip to inner lip), you'd get a better idea. You may have a better chance looking for wider road or touring tires (700c x 32 or 35)...

I bought manitou's Hayes Sole and so far they are pretty ok. They were a little weak at first, but they improved after a few rides (they haven't been broken in yet.) I haven't had any experience with other hydro brakes so I really can't make a comparison about performance. It's already a good deal for the price I got them for and their performance. Plus, I don't want to spoil myself by buying Juicy's on my other bike because I know the Sole's will feel like @#$% after. ;d

P.A. - sometimes all they need is some good ol' TLC from a mechanic. Proper bleeding and maybe better brake pads may help.

Might be a good idea to wait for the 2008 models, which, aside from a redesigned front end (Jamis had some durability issues with the down-tube/head tube junction), also have Avid Juicy 3 brakes (instead of Hayes Soles), Shimano hubs, and fatter tires (not that the Ignitors were bad, in fact, I love mine and am saving them for summer hehe)
