Agu was completely right. There's not enough chain wrap around the cog. As soon as I replace the cog to the 21 or 20 I'll remove a few more links.
I also just found out from Dan Dan that the chainring is really oblong! It's a bio pace ring which is really oblong in shape and is supposed to help on the climbs. This is the original middle ring this bike came with so I'll try it out with a bigger cog and hopefully I get used to it.
As Mr King says, I'm supposed to be thanking Bo for the rings. Thank you Bo! Yes it's definitely hard to find any singlespeed components around the metro manila area. Or maybe I'm just not looking in the right places.
The replacement stem is being machined as we speak so I'll be able to fit it on to the bike very soon and it won't be an "Eye sore" anymore as Edmund says.
The handlebars are way way long flatbars. As Agu says, the longer the better. The cool thing about these bars is that they are the original bars that came with the bike 16 years ago. It even has "gary fisher" with the logo etched into the bar.; definitely a keeper.
Another cool find is the seat post clamp. About 2 years ago, I made a purchase on ebay without checking out the details. I thought I was purchasing an XTR quick release clamp like the Salsas and the Hopes. Little did I know, it was an old school Shimano XTR seat clamp that was unused. It just happened to fit perfectly on this frame. The best part about it is that all it cost was $9 shipped from Norway!!!
Agu when do we ride?? You have to give me a long headstart!!

you're welcome JM. i'm glad the cogs are coming in handy to those on the SS boards. make a short list of hard to get SS items and i'll try to bring a few over on my next trip... sometime in 2007.
those cogs are made for shimano compatible BMX hubs, maybe the BMX specialty shops have various sizes in stock. I can't find them in my area either and have to mail order them. I hear Surly also makes nice cogs, but it's hard to beat the price of the BMX ones.
biopace rings!? hmmm you definitely need a tensioner if you're going to use them. I believe your chainlength will change slightly with each revolution. just make sure there's enough chain on the "long" stroke of the ring.
What degree rise will your new stem be? The handlebar height looks pretty good as it is (only looking at the photos and comparing to seat height). The length of the stem is definitely old school geometry... looks to be about 130mm.
Fun project. Good luck.

1990 Gary Fisher AdvanSS is almost complete!!! Thank you for all the input and help people! It's now useable but I still have to change the cog spacers to more permanent ones. I'm not able to tighten the lock ring as much as I'd like to. Here are some pictures of the almost completed project. Side view Front View (Notice the old school Deore XT 1 1/4" Headset) Handlebar with embossed GF logo Drivetrain (38:21 and I used Fox 32mm fork seals as spacers along with old headset bearings) Bio Pace 38T Chain Ring on original Shimano LX Crank sanded down for the brushed look) Shimano XTR 900 Seat Clamp Uno Quill Type Stem - 0 degree rise / 110mm Oops... Gotta wipe off some of the excess grease under the headset....
