Thanks Jay, I'm going home mid July for another short vacation... but of course there's a time for biking during that time... How's your 1x1? does it arrived yet? I was browsing the net for the Mary bar and found out that the On-One Inbred 29'er cost only 499UK$ for a complete bike...a very nice deal with very nice components on...

Hi Manny! It's a Karate Monkey...here are a few pics: simple set up lang, nothing fancy Hi Agu, Just a bit of questions regarding your 29'er...Normally a 32x18 combo on a 26'er is fine for most trails... But changing to 29'er,... doesn't it changed the gain ratio I'm not really sure, but doesn't it harder to pedal compare to your 26'er with the same gear combo and the same trail you're riding Thanks for enlighten me... ride safe...

I think Agu had strength in reserve... he'd just been holding back until the 29er was build.

Yeah...Agu's an alien with super"alien" strength on an SS 26 or 29... he ll be at the top 3 riders of any pack at Santi Rose

I think so ... you can see on his picture how much power he's charging on that climb...

hey Manny! mary bars are cool. my lemon lime is right beside me but i have no time to build it! im calling her Wednesday (Adams). ummmm reeason why i have no time to build it, is because my heckler is also coming tomorrow so i have to work on that first. ;D
agu rides a 32x18 and when i tried it seemed just fine. the gearing seemed to translate well from a 26er with the same gear. do all the calculations you want, i just thought it rode awesome.
i already blew up on the third hill of sta rosa and was pushing my way to the basketball court when i switched bikes with Agu. DANG! was powering up the hill on that thing. once you get it up to speed that sucker just keeps on going.
of course Agu is another story altogether...

I did checked using Sheldon Brown calculation kasi eh... a 32x18 on a 29'er is equivalent to 32x16 on 26'er... It just show how powerful that leg of Agu was...

hi guys
Manny, you're right, I did take a gamble sticking to 32x18 on the 29er - it does translate to 32x16 equivalent on a 26er but I've noticed it carries momentum much better, allowing you to stay on top of that gear longer.
At a certain (slow) speed though, you definitely feel the rolling resistance of the bigger wheels, but once past that, it's sweet.
Acid test earlier today when I rode with the All Terra boys up The Wall in Maarat, en route to Wawal, I stopped thrice, but I didn't walk it (more of pride siguro haha)...if I was on a 26er I guess I would have sustained the climb longer, the grade there is insanely steep - I decided to stop when i couldn't pedal my bike anymore (knees...must save the knees)...twas my first time to pedal up The Wall too...
not sure if I wanna do it again hahahaha
but the sweeping downhill to Aling Norma's store was a blast!

I guess practice and more practice climbing the wall and soon you'll make it...
I also ride with my geary buddies here and using 32x18 is just to slow on the rolling terrain. I am always overspin catching with my ride buddies...
I now switch to 32x16 which is good, but takes a lot of getting use to pushing bigger gears...

32x18, I think I saw you on your surly going up the wall. Asteeeg! How does it feel? I was going down in my car na (finished basic ride). I took years going up on my geared bike. It looks like you were doing a pretty fast clip.

Hi CobyM
It was sheer torture hahaha. But seriously, it really gave me a work out. I also had to keep in mind that the wall is but the first part of the ride, so I had to conserve energy. The All Terra boys were taking me to Wawa so the ride had a lot of unknowns for me. So I made around 3 stops going up. But I had to stay positive, and not think about giving up, turning around, or walking it. (I did turn around a few times to regain momentum and hammer back up hehe)
I've seen Matt going up The Wall on his SS too a few months back. Go Matt!
Doing the technical downhill was nice though, as were the river crossings. Had a blast going down the long downhill stretch to Wawa - no cyclocomputer on my rig but it rocked in the sweeping turns.

Wooooooow! You had the energy to go to wawa and back pa! Honestly, the wall climb gave me 2nd thoughts about building my SS.
June 11 SS ride.... Bahala na!!!! (If God permits)

ehhehe seems Jay is a one woman (este bike) man but I can't wait to see the green thing built up. Then we can have a SSurly ride hehehe Previous pic was of me going up. Here I am going down... photo snapped by King incidentally, on this same ride, DanDan was ripping up the trails on a 32x14 combo. WOW.

I used to ride these trails with my Bullit...but now I prefer riding it with my Surly instead...It's just too much fun... 1x1 on rigid 1x1 on R7...borrowed from Blur...testing lang po... Sorry Jay, but sooner or later, you'll be riding your Surly more than your Kate...hahaha... By the way, what's the name of your Surly then...

So how's Wednesday doing now? seems forgotten already I go the opposite way actually, I am now using an Avid Ti V-brakes on a new Mavic Crossroc UST(got it fairly cheap at php 8k only)... ;D Talking about disk on rear, you can set it up so you can easily slide the rear wheel back and forward for easy tire/tube or cog replacement.... Problem is, the brake pad wears only half of the portion that touches the disk thus making a different height on you pads. It also decrease the stopping power of your rear brake since only a portion is being used. In this case, you need to setup your rear brakes right and whenever you need to do some rear maintenance, removing one bolt and losening the other is the only way...It sounds time consuming but that's the way it is... Even on a Vee's, changing cogs (say 16T to 18T or vice versa) also requires reposition of your brake pads which is even more troublesome than the disk... Now that's the downside of Horizontal dropout compare to EBB or sliding one... ;D
