IMHO the rennen tensioner is the best available. Tough, effective, simple, durable and looks nice.
Isn't it advisable to run them in "push up" position instead of push down? you get better chain wrap that way. or is the chain too long on the second photo and they're waiting for a half-link to arrive?

hey Bee, im willing to trade you my half link for the tensioner. ;D cool! it does the push up and push down position! Hey Coby if your lucky you dont need a tensioner if you use a half link. sometimes though (like Agu's Tingle) with the halflink it was tight, and without it, the chain was too lose. however it was perfect for a push up position for his soulcraft roller.

If you have a tensioner, do you still need a half-link? In most cases no. But there are some tensioners that can tension only a small amount of chain so a half-link may be necessary depending on the gear and chainstay length.

Bo, I tried to setup mine and this is what happen. Without the surly tensioner and after removing a full link, the chain fit exactly using a 32x18 gear, snugly fit that I can pinch the chain inwards to move a little bit (about 5mm on both sides). I'm not sure if this is okay or I need a bit more slack. Test ridden it and I notice that there's no resistance at all but still not sure if it's OK. I tried to put back the full link and there's too much slack, both setup in photo 1 and 2 can't be achieved. So I guess I need a half link. Or the setup without the tensioner would be OK? Bee

Riding BMX and SS, dont they use the same pedal technique? Why SS? why not BMX w/ extra large front plates?

just got to ask this but isn't anyone dreaming of having an ebb (eccentric bottom bracket)? definitely nice to have a SS specific frame! my wishlist is either EBB, horizontal drops, sliding drops, ... anything to eliminate the tensioner. for those of us who converted a geared frame, an eccentric hub would be the best method (kind of pricey). tensioners are less expensive, but defeat part of the purpose of SS (fewer parts to breakdown). Bee - King is right, you're lucky. I also got lucky with my frame, 36x20 fits perfectly with a half-link. When it's new the chain is a bit tight, but after a few rides has perfect tension. When the chain starts to get too loose, then I know it's time to replace the chain. BTW... I've used two different BMX chains and they seem to wear out or elongate pretty fast compared to the PC58s I've used in the past. My first BMX chain was a budget ACS brand and didn't last more than 100 miles and SRAM chains give me 1000's of miles of use. Therefore, cheap chains are more expensive in the long run. My current BMX chain (KMC PT710) is already showing signs of wear and it has less the 1000 miles. I like this chain because it consists of half-links only and is very strong, but it seems to have a short life. I guess it's back to SRAM chains with a half-link to make it fit.

Riding BMX and SS, dont they use the same pedal technique? Why SS? why not BMX w/ extra large front plates? I did a trail ride on my BMX when I was a kid. I still remember how bumpy and harsh the ride was on 20" wheels... I felt every rock and almost chipped a tooth. Bigger wheels let you roll over rocks and bumps easier, especially if you have a rigid bike... part of the reason 29ers are getting popular. Also, with the small wheels and short wheelbase of a BMX you'll find yourself endoing much more often. Going uphill with a low seat and high bars would be difficult. BB and chainring clearance would be an issue on many trails except for the smoothest of them. I'd guess you'd be walking many sections if you rode BMX on the trails. I grew up with BMX and wish I still had my old bike, but they're designed for smooth surfaces instead of trails. I think BMXers have better technical skills than roadies when they convert to mtb, so there is a lot of similarity between the two disciplines.

Hi Manny! We're outta luck, haven;t seen any 29er rims, tubes or tires here. Maybe we can do a special order?
You could also use 700c touring rims, or 700c training wheels (at least 32 hole) - I bet you can find some here

a full link has two pieces, inner plates combined with outer plates and linked by a pin. 2" long. here's a picture of a chain with one half-link included. the plate is bent/stamped to include both inner and outer link, the pin is eliminated. 1" long.

It's not enough to have just one half-link, right? A spare is needed also in case this thing breaks or be damaged. So where can we buy this half-link sa 'pinas? The last time I asked about this, I think somebody (Agu???) said it's not available here...meron na ba?
