hi guys! i'd like to share my thoughts on my first trail ride over the weekend in rizal. not that i haven't ridden on offroad using an SS (i've done some trail riding before at sta rosa's apat na palapag to upak trail) but doing some trail riding in rizal is a totally different experience. saturday: parked at aling tina's and pedalled all the way up to the wall, giant (via the halo-halo trail) and back. one of the most challenging (if not crazy) things you can do on an SS is scale the wall without dismounting. it was totally crazy. pure pain from start to finish, hehehe. i had to do a zigzag pattern to do it (to attack the ascent gradually and for resting) and stand up most of the time. that's where it hurt me the most: standing up while grabing onto the bar ends. fairly simple but when i do it for an extended period of time, my triceps would start to ache along with my abdominal muscles and even my back which was unbearable at times. pain i've never experienced on a geared bike suddenly came haunting me like a ghost from the future, hehehe. going up to giant was typical. i guess the next i'd have to conquer the single tracks in maarat on an SS. if there's a next time, hehehe. sunday: ganged up with paul to guide some folks (sta. rosa bike haus) to puray. pedalled from chowking san mateo. trail started at the irrigation and ended up in wawa. it was pure biking bliss. i've never felt so happy in my life on a bike. as if time went back when i was a small kid (5 yo) and all you had to do was pedal and not think about anything else, literally. every pedal stroke was pure joy. no chain slapping, no shifting, the bike was easy to manuever and lighter overall, acceleration was quick, and did i say you dont need to shift any more? hehehe. tackling the somewhat difficult sections was a blast. although fun was limitless, at the back of my mind i was a bit scared of being left behind. for starters, i was acting as a sweeper. what if they get too fast, what do i do? luckily though i was able to manage but hopefully the next time, another dumb a** like me would have the gutts to try out SS so i can have a riding buddy other than the folks using geared bikes. there's still this inferiority complex about SS rigs that still prevents me from bringing my rig all the way to far flung places (for obvious reasons) but as along as somebody is there to tag along with me, i wouldn't mind pushing my bike if i have to, hehehe. ;D here's my revised SS rig: specs: gear configuration: 32 X 18 frame: bigcat fork: 80mm XCR w/ lockout and spring preload cranks: LX (octalink) pedals: M540 wheelset: 4 X 6 giant OEM 24 spoke wheelsets ss kit: da bomb tensioner: da bomb tires: 2.0 specialized fastracks (front) and 2.1 WTB nano raptor (rear) handlebar: spiros titanium straight handlebar bar ends: amoeba scud stem: attack racing 110mm (inverted) diskbrakes: IO tektros any comments on my SS configuration would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Already did! I like it when I weave in front of them, then I hear a comment like this: "Ang galing mag bike nung babae o!" (Trans: Cool chick! hahaha)... I get that a lot... I particulalry like it when there are two buses side by side on Ayala... I try to pull a high speed manual between the busses and pass them before the stop light... you should see the faces on the passengers inside ;D Oh well... if I die... I know I'll die happy hahahaha Which reminds of the time I almost got sucked underneath an eighteen wheeler... was trying to wheelie along side it when I began to loop out, so I tapped the rear brake to bring the front wheel down, I didn't notice the sandy roadside I was on... my rear wheel slipped to the side and my front came down hard. So the entire rear was headed to the underside of the trailer just in front of the rear set of wheels... luckily I didn't wash out and was able to regain control... moral lesson... wear your helmet! hahahaha I'm gonna die sooner than I think....

Hi guys! I just want to share what happened to me last Sunday @ Maarat. I was with my wife; her second trail ride (the first one was at sundown last December 26). Knowing it will be relax pace, I thought of trying-out what would it feel like to ride an SS. I want to know what it is like pedal like an ‘elitist and clandistic’ P1SSer… ;D Not that I have built myself a new rig, I just left my gearing on 32x18 and resisted the temptation to shift. We started at Timberland Gate and then turned-left going to Roxas Peak (the ‘most basic trail’ in Maarat daw, as my wife and I overheard from a group resting at the intersection ); upon reaching the main trail/road, turned-right to Ka Vergel’s ‘til the store before the decent to AFP, then towards Giant store and then finishing the ride at Timberland Gate again. When the trail started ascending, I would just stand-up and hold the bar ends for more climbing control. Many groups we have passed by shouted at me to use my granny and the ninth cog, I just replied to them a ‘good morning and a smile.” I find the simplicity of a SS to be elating, like I was riding my BMX again. No complexities of thinking what gear ratio, or chainring size, or cog size that I am going to use to tackle a certain terrain. I just have to grunt my way uphill and find joy on level grounds and downhills. On ascends, I would always leave behind my wife for I cannot slow down. I have to synchronize my pedaling with my breathing. Loosing traction on an uphill is a bummer. I found it hard to mount my bike again and pedal. Pushing my bike when I can’t pedal anymore is a given. I can’t help but to gnash my teeth on the uphill to Roxas Peak. On the apex of the trail, I found myself checking if my teeth went loose… ;D Over and over I would hear a shout from other groups to ‘use my extra gears’… Even my wife would tell me to stop my idiocy. ;D With the simple but fulfilling pleasure I found in doing SS, my only fear was that my chain might fail due to the excess torque that I am applying to my drivetrain. What now? Now, my right knee hurts like hell! But it was fun! Super fun! ;D ;D Will I do it again? Yes, I will. ;D Will I now build myself an SS? Bahala na… Will check with my kumander-boss muna… ;D Thank you for reading! ;D oh, i would like to add... difficulty = farting ;D

this is how i started out, went on a cmr without changing my gear the whole time. although it's not as tough as what jaymz did, it did encouraged me to go ss. nowadays, regardless of the comments i hear i will stick to my ss, i can always walk if it gets too tough... ;D Hi guys! The first thing that I made on my 1st ride w/ my SS rig was to do a 5ft drop to tranny... I love it. Last sunday, had tried to use it on moderate climbs... it was fun. My focus is only to hammer uphill to keep the bike rolling . I'm now a full pledge SS convert... I'm thinking to convert my freeride/downhill rig to a SS... anyway, I join DH competition only for the adrenaline rush & not for the podium .

oenone - parts should not really be much of a concern as most existing parts (even old ones) could be used to convert a bike to single speed. There are however a lot of SS specific parts in the market nowadays most of which however are quite pricey. Specifics to watch out for are tensioners and cassette fixes (conversions) other parts are fairly standard. kulot_salot indeed P1SSers are a dreadful group imagine a bunch of them creaming gearies on a climb...must really be a sight!
