and my next question is how tight is tight regarding the chain? i'm using an xtr chain. is there a better chain for SS? Very nice SS. For tightness, as long as you keep a 1 cm play on the chain that would be good enough. We just want to remove unnecessary stress on the rings and cogs. I also believe that as long as it is well lubed, it would be good. Hope this helps.

i have 2 questions, my bb is 118mm long and i'm thinking of replacing it to 113mm. my frame is a 05khs alite2000. what is the shortest bb available locally that i can put on this frame? A 113mm wide spindle should be ok I guess, as long as you have enou8gh clearance for the chainring to clear the chainstayand my next question is how tight is tight regarding the chain? I think a little amount of slack is better than too tight a chain. Especially if you use a converted chainring and cog (which have ramped teeth and aren't perfectly round. i'm using an xtr chain. is there a better chain for SS? The XTR chain should be alright. Just make sure to carry extra links and a chainbreaker whenever you ride. Should you snap the chain, it may be more cost-effective using an HG or IG chain. I've been using IG-51 chains for quite a while now, I just make sure to change them out to new ones every 4-6 months (or if they snap)here's the pix of my tukSSo. please comment(good or bad) or give suggestions on this built. this is my first time to build an SS. it will be much appreciated. looks good! no problems with fork bob when you stand up and hammer I hope

you can set the chain on the inside of the tensioner. i personally prefer it that way because more of the chain wraps around the rear cog and it's less likely that it will come off. af for the chain, an 8 speed chain is slightly sturdier and cheaper then a nine speed one. like agu, i use Shimano IG-51. i broke it on a la mesa ride around a month ago but i've fixed it and it's been ok since. it's must be over a year old so i should actually replace it soon.

32by18, Ka Verong did some laps on my ss (cherybombers former 1x1 ;D) at the 24hour race and he told me that the chain came off a couple of times (not really a couple, about 4 times ata). What we did was to reduce chain slack via chain tug. I just want to ask how tight your chain tension is? I think my chain tension is now 'snug'. I am currently using a ramped chain ring and cog, which i think contributed to the problem. The last time I saw your rig was at the recon of the 24 hour race course and i noticed that your chain had some amount of slack. TIA!

jarodthanks for the complement sir. will do what you said. @32x18 my current chainline is at the least, 5mm off(visual inspection). so i'm thinking of replacing the bb with a 110mm, i hope the crank arms will clear the chainstay. the chain gave almost no problems when i'm on the road. climbed mt. samat(it was a reeeeaaal challenge!) with her and i broke the chain one turn before the helipad/parking at the cross but i attribute it to a bad link i made(connector pin is missing). problem is when i use it on trails. the chain keeps coming off, so i guess i have to straighten out the chainline. i reduced some slack at the chain and it worked a little but still the chain came off. i was supposed to have her built as a rigid ss but i worried about the pedal to ground clearance so i got the dart fork. it's cheap and it's disc specific. if there is bobbing when i'm standing and mashing, it's unnoticeable, or i'm just too wasted to notice it. ;D the fork seems to settle on the sag it makes when i'm standing. i'm still thinking to go rigid if i can find a cheap longer cromo fork. cheapest i saw was 1,900 at kings. have to save more. thanks for the help sir. @ king will try what you said. btw, is there a spring loaded tensioner? thanks sir.

brad, I think your tensioner's not set-up properly. The upper hole of that tensioner should be mounted on your rear skewer (or axle if it's bolted on) while the lower hole is mounted on the hanger where the rear derailleur should be. BTW nice SS.

jarodthanks for the complement sir. will do what you said. @32x18 my current chainline is at the least, 5mm off(visual inspection) ) You can modify the chainline without going to a different BB spindle by putting the chainrings in the outer (or inner) position on the crank's spider and/or by using thinner spacers for the cog on the freehub (assuming you're not using a freewheel).

no problem bakalboy... a ss specific chain is also wider (as opposed to a 8 or 9 speed chain) allowing you more tolerance for an mm off on the chainline.

you might have trouble finding both a 34 chainring and a 20 tooth cog. instead, try 32 x 18. you'll get pretty much the same gear ratio 34:20 = 1.7:1 32:18 = 1.77:1 the Da Bomb kit (and most kits) usually comes with either a 16 or 18 cog. good luck! you can actually do that. i read that recently in Dirt Rag. 1 1/4" pvc pipe. the cuts have to absolutely straight though, otherwise the cog will move. you also need to place a metal spacer against the lockring. also, unless you're using something like an XT cassette, you wont have a lot of spacers, and the biggest loose cog you can use is i think 16. at least it's 16 on my 8 speed 11-28. there are probably bigger cogs on an 11-32 or 34. the other thing is, sayang naman yung cassette. the whole converter kit is only around P650. an XT level cassette is around P2500. I think I found my frame with a rigid fork. All it needs is an SS drivetrain to qualify as an SS bike. My target is a 34X20 combination. to King, Does the converter kit include a cog of your choice already? And where did you get them? thanks in advance, Alain

Where can I find longer rear skewers? I noticed when I used a surly tuggnut with the QR adapter, less of the QR goes into the nut. or are all rear QR standard sizes?

Hi Manitou
You using the tuggnut on your Exile? Doesn't it have bolts to take care of chain tension in the dropouts?
To answer your question, you may need to convert your rear axle into a bolt-on setup, if you think the QR doesn't have enough thread contact to maintain a secure rear wheel.

it was sticking out when i had the surly but it worked fine. nice ride losophile. i think you can still lose a link or so from the chain line. but hey, if intended use is UP spinning- then no worries. if it works it works.
