Now, back to regular programming... A breather after portaging our bikes down the gully… Did I mention that we were low on water? Afraid of getting the ‘nasties’ from the creek (me, from waking-up my sleeper amoeba friends inside my tummy), we restrained ourselves from drinking from the creek… After some creek wading, the creek drops toward a 50foot ravine… this is the point where we consulted again Bud’s GPS… he needed to gain higher elevation (eastern ridge) to get some bearings… and found out that we were off the original route by 200m… We heard some inhabitants below the ravine cutting bamboos… I tried calling their attention. To my surprise, they just ignored us. Two young girls saw us and ran away… We were gonna ask directions only & some water to spare… Thinking that waiting for the people to acknowledge us is hopeless… I clambered to the top of the a ridge on our right (west) to see if it is feasible to reach our intended route… But the ridge and gully was littered with fallen bamboo making it impossible to see any tracks or trails… Time check 1345hrs… So, we decided that the best way is to climb down the ravine to talk to the people… At first, I got the feeling of aloofness from the group; they wouldn’t go near me… they stood their ground from where they are cutting bamboo (I can’t even see them with the thick foliage)… They asked if we were PNP-SAF (because I was wearing black)… and they asked what was our intention in the area… now, knowing that we don’t pose any kind of harm to their group/family… they exposed themselves and agreed on assisting us in exiting the area towards Puray. Three of tribesmen went back to where we left our bikes. Mang Fred, the family eldest, accompanied us to their hut. Now, we know why they won’t acknowledge our presence, because they thought we were the military... And to my surprise, the hearsay story about a serial rapist-killer around Pasig and Rizal reached them. Now, knowing we are one of the ‘good guys’… We were invited to eat, get water, and drink coffee with them. Mang Fred and two of the younger tribesmen helped us in carrying our bikes out of the area and towards Puray. It was more than 30-minutes of nonstop boulder hopping… We can’t help but think of our speed in the exit if not for these good people. Consider if we were the ones carrying our bikes... it will take us forever to exit the area!!! It would be impossible for us to exit Kanapsan area without them.

i once rode this trail with vince, dindo and MMS guys many (4?) years ago...it was mid-summer...leaves were dry and the heat was almost unbearable...i can still remember going down that single track underneath the cover of bamboo (buho)...it was a complete torture...zero wind velocity and temp was high...when i tried to pee, i had to stop sevaral times coz it felt like my et-et was burning...my urine was unbelievably hot... i got so darn exhausted that there were portions that i just pushed my bike down ahead of me..i just let go and let it fall... i didn't actually care what would happen to it. ;D ...one MMS guy got dizzy and he was like all red, like the devil in the movies...i think he suffered from heatstroke..lucky there was small stream ahead and dindo washed his head and poured water on him. after the ride, vince, dindo and i agreed, we'll not going to do that trail again. ;D its not worth it peeps hehe!... i think... jaymz, tell bud lets do the rock ( bato) instead...here you actually ride.

looking at these pics gave me mixed feelings. i gasp with envy with what i've missed, and i gasp as well thinking i have escaped the torture i could've gone through riding with you harcore pornographic riders. hehehe nah', it was the length of time required to finish the ride that i got issues with. visa officer wont approve. kung holiday lang sana ang lunes.(trans. excuses excuses) Great ride arnold, jaymz, oliver. PS: was the catpao delicious?

Thanks Jamyz for this hellride ;D ;D Thanks for the great shots brad It was really a wonderful experience though it was very tough ride, but meeting those Dumagat tribesmen is a compliment I'm thinking of going back in that place maybe after 6months and bring something for them maybe old clothes, or toys for the children, they are good people worth to give even a little things they don't have.

jaymz, awesome pics and story lines. awesome socks too, hehehe. ;D. cant wait for my own pair. miss riding with bud and arnold. its good to hear that they are still biking or maybe we've been missing in action kasi when talking about the rizal area nowadays. the last time we did that route, fortunately, we did not get lost. the trail was still clear. in any case, i miss getting lost, hehehe ;D. you 3 had an awesome adventure there. panalo! hope to see more riding from you 3.

Arnold Totally agree with you. I'm with you on this Arnold and Jaymz (yes you James Ben Mallen ... the famous rock climber) I strongly suggest we hire a jeep to the nearest dropoff point where we can pedal with the goods. I know some of us have stuff lying around to give away and hopefully we'd do this soon. Lemme know, pero I wont pedal all the way my name's Yukon, a newbie
