Okay, here's a question for us Downhillers & Freeriders... Are DH/FR guys really "extreme" & even downright crazy or do they only think & project that way? ;D

i guess extreme and craziness were born twins, sample- ride extremely fast and people will shout at you "P-tng! Sira Ulo" i experienced that brad, hehe, or when you ride fast on the trails, jump or huck a huge drop that never been tried before, your friends will surely tell you..you're d@mn crazy...while other say " only crazy people are into exreme sports...
one thing for sure....I LOVE BEING CRAZY...don't you anshwa,,,,redneb?

hmmm.... one day, me, redneb and a gag of others wer in pagsanjan laguna, we were looking for a trail, we ask the locals if they new one. the local gave the direksyon and said " ay dito kayo dumaan kasi daan kabayo lang yan, mahirap din maglakad dyan" then all off us went to the direction we are warned of, then the local says " ay mga loko loko, sabi na nga mahirap dun pa pupunta, mga sira ulo" circa 99
no further questions your honor..

ummm for me... i have no choice, i lost my sanity a long time ago and i have been trying my best to regain it back but to no avail.
honestly, im not the gutsy type of person, im shy, quiet, reserved.... i know i dont look the part but im a nice guy... loner type, when i opened my mind to DH riding back in the early 90s, ask yetiman, ricky M, boyet and the rest of the old-skul crew.... i was a serious-joe back then, i was just friendly but i wasnt like what i am now......
i guess everything that happened to me is a direct result of bein a victim of gravity, i got used to bein crazy cuz i was more relaxed, no more uptight- ass driven persona!
i was classified as a true-insane person cuz im special, i chose to push myself beyond the boundaries and the thin line of what they all call "normal"... i didnt evolve into me just by reading a lot of magz n watchin a lot of vids ... i chose to go out and make it happen, cuz i wanted answers to my questions: "IS it possible?" or " What if i try this like this?".......
once u start having questions like these in your mind, which kinda haunts you when you sleep. Well, i guess you prolly are crazy!

@ extendead
yep, 99' a local DHer/mountaineer frnd of mine Russell, pointed us out to a trail in makiling. the ride was suppose to be a simple one from pk1 to UPLB, then russel sees us at the store near pk2... he poits us towards the "TRAVERSE"........ we started 7am ended up in Macban! 5pm!..... no food, no water, no shite!
peng, bans,me,jon and a few others...... oh well its just a past case of "We'd never know not unless we try" right?
There was never a time we backed out of anything, and this is the foundation we all grew up with in our biking life.
Extreme: = pushing limits n boundaries beyond the norm..... so how do we classify POSERS? they got the gear, the looks, the talk, the walk.... but no balls....but theyr extreme! DAW! lol
.... when i first met the old skul crew they thought too i was a poser, until they witnessed the "FULL DH BOMBER BIKE, FULL MOTO GEAR, ...... ABSOLUTELY OUT OF CONTROL!"..... i use to mow down carbaos, trees, small nipa huts, marshalls, spectators... and a lot more.
hihihihi...... my 2 cents.... and i expect change fer that!

Hmm... Interesting...
The reason I asked this was because I really can't say I'm extreme or crazy. For instance, when I first saw riders in Diablo hit the bigger drops, I was pretty intimidated. I thought they were crazy. When I worked my way to dropping the bigger stuff & finally able to drop every single one of them in the park, I didn't feel I was crazy nor extreme like most of them there. Even clearing the jump lines didn't make me feel extreme. I recently cleared two step down jumps I've only eyed the past months & I still felt like the same old Anshwa after hitting them following a rider buddy of mine.
I ride my bike because it's fun & not because it's extreme. Don't get me wrong, I do want to acquire the skills that I still think are sick when I see other riders pull off tricks. But I notice every time I'm able to acquire a skill, it doesn't make me feel any "crazier" or "more extreme". If anything, it makes me feel I still have tons more to work on.
In fact, this one guy I ride with doesn't even act extreme or crazy - he's actually very mellow. He's even the first one to always say he's nervous before hitting a new drop. He's hit most of the drops in the park with the exception of one (that'll be done soon for sure).
Don't stop the postings, guys. Indulge me. I'm really looking for different viewpoints on this. Maybe we could find the right viewpoint & having that knowledge, we'd be able to draw more riders to the DH/FR scene.

@ Extendead
The term "Poser" suddenly reminded me of someone...
I do remember seeing someone out there riding along Macapagal avenue at probably a bit less than 5 kph.
He was, as Extendead would say, clad in "Full Battle Gear."
Full-face helmet, elbow pads, shin/knee pads... the entire perforated foam and injected plastic kaboodle!
I didn't realize the terrain in that area was that difficult...
Blind item, anyone?

hmmm... yup very interesting
anshwa, to tell you the truth, DHers here are just the same as you. we have day jobs.. mostly are professionals.. we are just typical human beings doin wat we love best... still have fear when doin some drops or some very tyt turns... even simple manuals.. i still fear that my brakes my got loose.. i doubt if my bunny hop will make it..
but thats it?? it is the controlled uncertain thing..
may be the fullface helmet unleash the wild side or the demons... we just dont see it cause we are wearing one... ;D

hehe anshwa, ur at a stage where-in you are comfortable already, the craziness is like absent on the concious state, but ill bet as you drive home from the bike park..... the crazy thoughts just pop back in........ to some it kicks in when they get home..... adrenaline kinda clouds craziness sometimes...... you can only analyze somethin as sick, crazy or insane once your mind goes back to its relax state.
** my neurologist told me that, hehehe...... crouching whiteboy, hidden redneck image.lol

But to actually feel I'm an extreme rider just isn't there. In other words, it just didn't feel like it's such a big deal after clearing a section. I do effin' scream my heart out after I land a project drop or jump but right after the "Woohoo!" & the "Yeah!", I don't feel I was any crazier than before I pedalled off the bridge. Don't know if I made sense?

I know what you're saying Answha, I understand that and I think redneb understands that too. It's just that we have different environment here, you know, right? This country has an erratic economy that affects us all (I'm on topic here, don't worry. Hehehe!). Most of us here, downhillers, have careers that affects us and becomes stressed by the end of the day. And to cut the story short, we anticipate weekends as freedom day so all in the mind's hell break loose, hence insanity projected by us, amplified by Redneb (sorry Red, you're a good example ;D ). To us here, this is the norm. For us going to Starbucks on weekends - sipping coffee (pinkies off the cup ears) and trying hard to speak like americans with lots moolah is insanity ;D so all said, we think we're sane like Red (Binawi ko na ha!) and as you've said, "it's fun" and that's what makes us crazier - like Redneb.

if you think you are crazy or you are going crazy, you are not!.... the real crazy people don't know they are crazy...they don't and wont admit that they are crazy (that's according to my dentist hehehe!)..rebneb and the rest are just maybe "more" normal than the others the quest to achieve higher, farther, faster etc ways is embedded in our brains since the beginning...otherwise we're all still be using our feet to get from pasig to quiapo ...and it's not gonna stop. did anshwa say he's not crazy? naku delikado ka! haha! joke lang pards ingat kayo dyan...ride on!

..... true, omfg you just killed me.... ouch tummy cramps i cant laugh anymore ... help ouch..!
@ soul ....... i wasnt normal when i was born, but i straightened up n acted normal to get released from from my 8 yr sentence.. i got out in 2 1/2 hehehehe... im sure all the doctors and judges signed the release paper in 96' heheheheh..........
.......... but crazy has its setbacks tho, sometimes when im not riding... i just take long drives to provinces in luzon n bicol to eat homegrown delicacies and listen to relaxing music on the road, then go home and just enjoy life... watch tv telenovelas , sit back relax and just do things regularly to maintain my current sanity.......... lol
........ Life just takes a different turn everytime i strap-on my 661 carbon helmet.. then i just smile not knowing why................... life is sweeter if you live every moment (ika nga nila)..

I wish Im actually an AM rider not really a full blown DH or heavens..an FR rider. I cant relate to any airtime ...cant even do a decent manual ;D but I ride my DH bike fully clad in armor, I d hit most rough spots and an occasional jump or drop my relatives and some non-DH peeps call me crazy for hitting the uber rough terrain but I know better: Im just nurturing my sanity by being momentarily insane Those who tried the dark side , know Answa brad, your evolution from AM to Dh to FR is highly admirable and so is your humility brad Hitting all the drops in Diablo is an awesome achievement to say the least

Alphabolt, thanks for the nice words, brad. But really, the north shore stuff in Diablo are not really that big of a deal.
I think you may have hit the mark: we're just momentarily crazy when riding & it just goes back to normal after the day's ride.
