One way to know if a hard tail can handle tripple clamp or dual crown fork
is to look for "gusset" (reinforcement sheet of aluminum welded to the head tube),
if it is heavily gusseted it can handle.
the bomb cromoly frames have wrap around style welded gusset
the pic above, the frame's top tube and top tube is just welded to the head tube
no reinforcement gussets or whatever to support heavy load on the top tube.

hmmm way way abck there was a thomson handlebar but it was produced in easton tubing... hahahahah... lol ummm iv seen a lot of HT frames break apart always at the same location.... hehehehe triple crown fork din lahat.... ;D cuz if your really serious about hucking stuff and dropping wicked stuff 6.5" is enuff for FS frames then boxed-out linkage points, as compared to the HT ... everytime you land the force applied by the impact is distributed to the stress points of the welds on the tubes... eg: hit the gong with a blunt steel hammer, observe the vibration waves... now the equaiton is: bike wt+rider wt+drop ht (spd+entry angle)=? .... another example: get a sword just whack it against a rock.... observe it breaks apart but dsnt warp=imagine aluminum tubes ;D HT+northshore style riding=short frame lifespan there are FR or freeride frames available out there... use the right tools for the right job.... back in the day(yetiman days ;D)we used our burly DH racing rigs for everything sometimes even XC and road! ;D..... the mtb market now has a broad range of designs n brands to choose for every insane cyclist......seriously ;D gwapo HT on 3p-crown but its got its cons

ahh during the yetiman days.. i have a GT avalanche 0.0 the yellow GTs that is super small.. but mine has a small headtude.. around 4" which unlike today has around 6" i think.. that bike has a 3p crown fork known as rockshox judl SL, but its just 4" of travel.. unlike todays forks..
i used to ride it on DH and mostly streets... ( the days when wheelie drop was born! tnx for badong for showing the racer type that it can be done on a DH slow n smooth!! ) and my frame is still alive.. it is now hunged on my ceiling...
at badong says.. get the right tool for the right job!! follow it cause he says so.. hehehe

buddy, why is that the the tire nokian from finland named nokian?? is it because Nokia phones came from finland? Yes, Nokian is the mother company of nokia electronics, i did a research on this and Nokia(n) was originally a company which harvested rubber, silica & etc which they turn into semiconductor stuff and then they ventured into cell phones... .. do your homework! zip tie or cable ties where the best friends of downhillers? is that a myth? Yes zip ties have very numerous applications in downhill.... b4 we used zip tie to restrain lester then we kicked him down the cliff... hahahaha.... or if one of your co-riders fall unconcious on the trail just zip tie his hands then pull down his pants then so all the other riders who see him will never forget him ...."Downhill Rape-slay victim". ;D dnt forget to take incriminating pictures is buddy always carrying a cloud 9 in every DH run?? myth myth! no more sugar for me.... hehehehe being 35ish sucks! ;D

hardtails braking apart with your triple's? kinda odd?
i used a scott hardtail (now gts) b4 when i got my mongoose mgx to break apart after landing in the luneta carabao stair gap, installed my dnm vts90 and still i destroyed most of my components but not the frame.... no gussets or whatsoever can be found in the top tube/head tube, only paint!
Maybe its the aluminum or the frame batch, or maybe i just got lucky? but wait there's more!....
scott frame still alive, set up for palengke riding for my grumpy tatay, but ready for 4x...

There are some HT frames that are triple crown ready that dont have gussets - the cove stiffee i had can use a triple, but it had no gussets. just a huge weld area.
papa bender - do you go faster if you wear briefs in your cycling shorts?
hehe nice thread!!!

Drugs and cycling goes hand in Hand, TOUR de France, world cup XC and DH
Are you in favor for mandatory drug testing for downhill racers including herbs and spices and kankunis slimming tea? ARTHO, alaxan pain kilers. cannabis hasshish sagada, redbull gatorade, lipovitan, benadryl, dextrose, chicken medicine, and testicle testerone in the philippines?
Narrate the "brief"/t-back history of Downhill in the Philippines islands, in your sexperience.
WHy there is still no governing body for 15 years of DOWNHILL in the phillipines.

1. what life insurance is best for downhiller, just in case?
........ just get ur normal high premium life insurance.. just remember these ppl dnt cover extreme sports, so always remember if they ask you at the hospital how you broke it ... you got hit by a car that ran-away then you landed on n broke ur limb. never say/admit you were trying to clear that nasty 15 footer rock drop... hahahaha...
2. is there an insurance company that that insure dh rigs?
...............for a minimum of 250t i think there is.... im not sure.... heheheh
3. stem with airbag system, saddle with built-in seat belts, camelbak bag equipped with parachute in case of emergency, chris king head sets with power steering, anti- manure tires with anti-bacterial, anti-theft system for our rigs, and air brakes with abs system... is it possible that we can have this in the mere future?
.... hmmm not in the near future.. see DH is a very down n dirty sport... creature comforts are prolly not applicable cuz its basic gravity+bike+rider out there.... heheheheh
4. can i drink liquor for boosting my confidence while im in dh-ing...
No, i tried that for a decade nothing good ever resulted in drinking b4 a ride... its not like driving, wherein the heavier the alcohol kicks the more fearless you become.... hehehehe thats cuz its 4 wheels, no balance issues, and your protected by the car body.....
in DH .... true you'll go faster but once u start sweating your body absorbs all the alcohol and malt hence u start getting drunk...slower reflexes, irregular heart rate, muscles on ur limbs get soft n become prone to cramps n fatigue... then u start buying the farm or just randomly hit trees at 60kph.......lol

@ fattire... AM bike set-ups are well equiped with 5-6.5" travel, you can bring AM bikes n go really fast on DH trails... the catch is your gonna crash more oftenly, DH bikes weigh heavy and require lon travel forks with monster wide rims n tires.. thats what the AM lacks at high speed..stability... anyone can go fast.. but can they go fast and control it?
you'd enjoy 40-50kph dh sprints on the trail but once the technical stuff comes thats where the AM bike grabs on for its life...
if its AM/FR and a bit of DH enthusiasm well... the Chumba Evo can play all 3 riding styles, AM/FR/DH... its just a matter of component choice... the cruizer is pretty good too( it levitates at high speed...lol trans: tires barely touch ground!)...
Then theres the euro AM set-up this is for the insane n crazy that love grindin up and then bombing down and hucking or dropping off stuff....the Orange Patriot frame rigged with a fox 36 or 66rc, then 22-36 cranks, some single track rims 2.35s.... heheheeh...... u can ride it AM/FR/DH or even 4x....
a good AM/FR trail in tagaytay would be "holy trail" @ brgy neogan........ ridge 2 is nice too but its 50% concrete..... aheheeheh.....

@rocketman ? WTF? drugs and cycling go what? hand in hand? holy.......!
If only every Downhill mtbiker or Freerider would research on the creation of MTB and DH MTbiking.... it all started from a bunch of stoner northern californians headed by gary fisher and owner of ritchie cycles riding old reinforced schwinns on balloon off-road 20" tires? ...........zzzzzzzzzzz
and if ever drug testing would be mandatory during DH races locally... hmmmm...
Now how the hell am i gna join now? OMFG im gna turn into a frorider......lol
... and everything becomes bad when its abused. drugs never solve anything they just make you think ur ok, but your not.... thats when you die.... hehehehe lol

Dear Bender...
I am still not sure whether I should use clipless pedals for my bike. I've been using platform pedals for many years now, and I must admit that I am getting extremely turned on when I see Barok ride past using clipless pedals. Is it possible to use a clipless pedal for my left foot and a platform pedal for my right foot while I'm still undecided?
Lovingly yours,
Ate Helen

@ extendead ..... No, Rocketman is half puerto moreno, half meztiso...but pure hortillio.. he is big time bachelor...hehehehe.....
@ alphabot..... heheheh XC bar with bar-ends on a size 16" HT : Eboy quinones/XC RP team... b4 when riser bars were only availabe at 1.5" rise.... ........................yes these things snap off, even without direct impact with other solid objects. but if this happens it might be a manufacturing defect..... .........................single wall rims are still very effective, a good puncture proof set of rim tapes, a set of good inner tubes paired with stiff sidewall knobby tires ...... = light n tuff wheelset ..........................ODI lock-ons(indestructible end-caps), Lizard skin lock-ons(wickedly tough grips), be careful with these lock-ons the brands with steel end-caps hurt like hell once you get slammed by one of these........ its a lot like getting whacked by a .38 snub nose.. but dnt worry its gna leave a mark for 2-3 weeks.... heheheh

Dear Santino,
i have an idea on how u feel, if u can acquire a DH tutorial of nathan rennie ........ it would explain the pros n cons... here: flats= more energy n skill required to maintain balance n adjust to erratic DH conditions . but for clipless= requires faster hand.eye, foot coordination and enhanced line of sight......
its all a matter of getting used to.... but flats n clips are very different hence, foot-pedal position, pedal stroke, which really affects your center of gravity.... so i wouldnt recomend switching back n forth........
honestly ive been a flat pedal user for so long.... but i started DH racing on clipless pedals...i only use my 545s when im trying to cure my ejector-seat habit...(one gets panicky when they stop riding then start again) hehehe
