"thank GOD it's friday!!" ;D Ralph Tie, kenneth cole, tailor made-super ironed long sleeves and slacks--living in a corporate world--you are getting ready packing up your things off your table when your boss appeared out of nowhere and said "Care to play badminton with the group tomorrow??" You gave a blank stare and said " no boss but I'm,I'm,I'm--have a sched tomorrow" Your good ol' boss quite irked said "so what would it be more important than a set of badminton games with your officemates?" then you replied with a lot hesitation " I'm doing downhill mountainbiking tom sir in san mateo." "what's that?" he said "downhilling sir???" you replied embarassingly "this guy is nuts!!!" your boss pointing at you while looking at your peers, and the atmosphere went laughing out loud while you feel like hiding under your chair! "hanep, Extreme!!!" your peers jokingly said with sarcasm, not taking you seriously... Our sport is not popular as badminton or poker. And if you are like this person, living in a corporate world, it's very hard to convince others of your "dark side." Getting crazy on the weekends is totally different wearing reading glasses, gelled hair, looking like a dork on the weekdays! So, how do you tell people--like your officemates, bosses and corporate friends, the chick of your dreams or even your mom that your into this "nuts" sport?

who's into the rush? ask it in your office... nobody will answer...
pity that most of our friends and officemates doesn't know about our kind of sport.
when we say that were going dh or biking extreme they are more familiar with road bikes, even the term XC or Cross-country means road cycling. when you say off-road ganun pa rin tingin nila. they couldnt distinguish it. basta kahit may suspension pa bike natin tingin nila pang lubak lang. what?
Most Filipinos are ignorante... kaya dehins umunlad pilipinas. why? iilang Filipinos lang ang mahilig mag-explore, pag may natutunan na kakaiba or somewhat there's a new discovery even in other fields, PINAGTATAWANAN. dehins iniintindi, there's no support...
IMAGIN THIS, Sea Games, DOWNHILL RACE, we got 2 medals courtesy of our brave warriors Joey Barba (silver) and Mike Borja (bronze). it wasn't even on the news or headline or even given a good spot in the newpaper for nationwide circulation, ni dehins nga pinalabas sa T.V., mas na na-feature pa yung mga sports na walang kwenta na dehins man lang umani ng medal.
i hate the sports section of most of the news paper... why? HORSE RACING? is this a sport? sh@t! sugal po yun, GAMBLING not sport. laging may kalokohan sa loob (sa mga jockey na naglalaglag ng game at mga sindikato) so malinaw it's not a sport. COCK FIGHT (sabong), CRUELTY TO ANIMALS! yes it's a nature of cock to fight but in this case they are provoked... paano naman naging sports ito? ang layo naman sa boxxing nito... because manok ang naglalaro.. paano naging sport? skill ba ng tao ang pumapatay sa manok? whatever! GOLF, Buti pa ang golf na boring panoorin @ cable television is given a long airtime and even a whole page in newspapers also included is tennis, pingpong, badminton.
ako everytime somebody asks ano yun i don't get tired telling them and explaining what kind of sports this is, maybe i can even give them a little of what to expect but at least they'll get a picture after the discussion. sometimes i play a dh/freeride video with a cool soundtrack like NWD 5 & 6 in my office dati during off peak hours of work. so that i could relax and maybe influence others or help them open thier eyes on it. maybe after that they might tell stories to thier friends of what they see for the first time on video that might give also a picture to other people in thier circle. a lot of effort with small results, but maybe someday, sisikat tayo...
filipino... filipino... filipino.... magbago na tayo! tingnan mo uunlad tayo!!!

You got me there yetiman... ;D What can I do? its our company sports fest and im a member of the badminton and bowling team... But for sure being a mtbiker is an advantage as far as endurance is concerned. All of them were wasted after 2 sets and Im just beginning to warm up! Anyways, I dont know what my officemates will think after they see me in full racing gear with dirt and all launching on a dirt jump. Hahaha! Even my non-biker friends can't imagine I'm still so into this "extreme" sport! So do I tell them about my passion? Lets just say they know I'm into mtbiking... I just leave it up to their imagination what type of mtbiking I do... ;D

all true, its really hard to explain how mt.biking is to a normal person.they always see road biking and mt.biking as one.at first its ok to explain how different it is etc but after a couple more Q's,you simply get tired of answering the Q's about it.som,e people will just not understand how it goes for us.well,MTBiking is not for everyone thats fo sure.
sometimes i think its better this way, that most dont know or are not interested in MTBiking(maybe a selfish tought but it really is better in most aspects) and that it doesnt become a fad that everyone will be getting into because its "uso".
like for mt.climbing, there was a time that not much people were into it and the trails, mountains, camp sites were so clean and treasured and everyone is so disciplined in keeping it that way, then boom, more "people" got interested and everything became a huge mess.
Mtbiking to some is just a hobby,a sport, a weekend thang. but for most of us,its a lifestyle.
lets ride!

I save a few of my jump pics on the office PC for me to view and for them to accidentally browse. But I dont think they will understand it at all talaga. My wallpaper at the moment is an abstract pic of my rear hub and disk brake splashed with dried mud. After being asked what it is, I still get asked, "Mahilig ka sa bike e no?" like it's something weird. My boss, whos really a great guy (and who has been slightly trying to influence me to go bowling), thought it was from a motorcycle or scooter. After saying it is from a mountain bike, he said, "Proud ka sa set-up mo e 'no?". Well, it's more correct to say I'm proud of this "lifestyle". Perhaps dehins nga nila totally mage-gets unless they experience it. Come to think of it, there are even a few cases that quit after experiencing "the wall".

Why is it that when writers doesn't have the faintest idea (or just don't give a d@mn) about their topic it turns out @#$%? I find it funny the way he wrote this part: "In the hills of Antipolo, where I commute to and from work every day, Sumulong Highway is jammed with mountain bikers of all ages as well as shapes and sizes during Saturday and Sunday mornings. Portly parents pedal shoulder-to-shoulder beside their kids, as well as extreme games sportsmen, who ride not only along the paved roads but also on the muddy trails up and down the hills." Sounds like a typical wannabe writer to me... hey xtofi, i'm as normal as anyone can be...c'mon you can try me...i'll listen to you. read juboy's (Willkamm) laudable interview in the recent Manila Standard article... after reading the article though, I dont think they see us as MTBikers "normal"... www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=sports01_sept12_2006 duh?!

Sounds like a typical wannabe writer to me... There's more. Apparently the (misguided) writer even inserted a "recent" quote from Boyet Camba which was taken - if i'm not mistaken - from a feature article which came out in Urge magazine more than three freakin' years ago! (I remember that quote specifically coz I've read and re-read that issue/feature several times. I was still relatively new to the hobby then and I clearly recall the issue featuring Boyet, who was the top gun of local DH scene at the time, riding a white Intense(?), i think). Not that the quote was taken out of context or anything but it just made the article look really lame for those with a clue. Well, unless Camba was actually recently interviewed and just happened to say the same exact quote. Like it or not however, non-cyclist authored articles such as this are just about as good as you can get. Can't expect too much from a hack who's out of the single track loop now can we? But it's not all that bad - if only for the purpose that it provide a glimpse, a faint idea, however inaccurate, of the MTB subculture/lifestyle to the rest of mainstream society. Represent! Recognize! Personally i don't want the sport/hobby to be publicized too much, no sir. After all it's probably the escapist, esoteric, out of bounds and insufferable nature of mtb that appeals to our collective souls .

Here's that passage from the article:
But for other mountain bikers, even the danger presented by the sport is not enough. In a recent interview, one of the country’s most bemedalled mountain bikers in Boyet Camba said the attraction of the sport for him is mainly competition.
Having dominated the local mountain biking scene, Camba is yearning for international competition.
“I’ve already gotten a chance to gauge my talent with other riders from Hong Kong and other countries and I know Filipinos can beat them. Local riders have to compete against these foreign riders to push themselves to the next level. We already know about each other’s capabilities. We need to compete in another arena against riders of other countries to become even better,” said Camba.

I've practically given up explaining riding to a lot of non-riders. Fact of the matter is that people are caged in this framework of what is & what is not possible. They ask you what you do & when you tell them, they don't believe you. You tell them you do bunny hops, they'd say, "Oh like those kids on bikes?". Tell them you drop 10 footers, they tell you you're crazy. Explain to them it's not how it sounds like, they don't get it. Tell them you like cranking uphill in the mountains, they don't get why you'd want to "punish" yourself. If you get a sprain from playing basketball or badminton, it's like nothing. Tell 'em you got it badly casing a landing, you're a kid & should grow up already.
I guess just don't explain to those who really wouldn't get it...
