old school shorty stem.... direct mounts suck .. you end up ripping out the top crown of your fork and snap handlebars on impact! ....Ever been stabbed by a 1.5" pipe? i wonder how its gonna look like inside the ER while they stitch n plug you together? hahahaha..... direct mounts are cool if you have sponsors and everything, like everytime you practice n crash theres a guy waiting fer you at the finish line to make your bike shiny and race worthy again? right? eh what if wala? ...... not unless you own a bike shop probably yes......lol (new crown n stem+bars? lol....$$$$ drain the piggybank mode!) as compared to the regular steerer mount stems.... well they work just fine, i got hit plenty of times already by regular DH stems.... they knock your dentures out, its like getting hit by a tricycle in the tummy(sometimes you get winded you shite ur pants hehe), getting scrapped by the stem in yer ribcage areas....hahahah... relax thats normal. But I'm practical and just like quiesledaddy, pick ur poison......... ** tell me which hurts more ok! getting stabbed by a pipe or getting your teeth all knocked out in one blow.... ya' hear! Oh and one more thing if you do go direct mount stem... always buy spare stem, upper crown for fork, and extra handlebar... you may want to buy extra levers too... and go goodridge cables...... hahahaa I know someone has been stabbed by the stem right Micosabeh??? bwahahaha!!! you have a replica of Pe@*s at your handle bar... before... hahaha!!!!! ;D
