since i can't still be classified as a dedicated downhiller i still don't own a fullface (hiram2 lang) i mostly use a cheap but reliable freeride/skater's helmet for AXC and freeride schtick and stunts kuno
but lately i'm seriously considering to get myself one. so the question would have to be: what's the best bang for the buck (can't get enough of this term hehe) fullface helmet around?
the cheapest i've seen thus far is the Star brand-3k, Bell-4K(?) and the 661 Bravo Comp for less than 5k.
any feedback on these models? Or maybe you can recommend others? second hand is alright as long as wala pang amoy sa loob hehe
major consideration: not too heavy and with lotsa vents
thanks

Brother serious muna..... ;D Now anyway when it comes to helmets i can be trusted. ;D As long as it has a DOT snell sticker its safe.....but it doesnt mean your nogin aint gna break!...lolz ;D Its gonna get pretty shaken up like a tsunami for a couple o weeks but, hell! ;D you'll get over it..... ;D Now second important thing in racing helmets are "Ventilation"......... You see most common idea bout vents are "para malamig sa ulo"...... ;D.......(ay oo nga!) You see if your head's temperature is hot, ones ability to think, react and feel are slowed down.....If u can see shite and get panicky at say......55kph.....your gonna say "i knew shouldve gone for the cooler helmet"... ;D Cuz the more uncomfortable your head gets with the heat n sweat the more energy is consumed(u get tired easily). Plus your focus is distracted by your "certain" discomfort. ;D so the more susceptible you are in losing focus and eventually trashing yourself all over the trail..... ;D Dada ith dhad guna hurtdh?............ ;D Ok now next important thing......FIT!.... There are now adjustable paddings in the helmets today so dont gimme that @#$% "wala size eh" or "abno kasi ulo ko eh".....cmon guys! ;D If the bucket aint snuck tight its gonna waddle around and end up breakin all yer teeth all at the same place!..... ;D Good chin clearance and coverage of the jaw. Easy slip-in and easy slip-out......i mean if its like takin off yer ears and bruisin yer cheeks...cmon...that probably aint right! Price?...............nah dont worry bout it. most helmet related kiils are results of spine injuries and internal ruptures......it aint the prices! ;D Style?.........aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh Hey it doesnt mean if it looks good its probably good. Comeon face it u can only keep a helmet that shiny n clean if u "actually" dont use it... dings n dents are a fashion statement and it always has a short revolutionized story tale connected to it. ;D Cmon boys n girls ive been hit in d head so many times i cant even even remember why my AZX has a boulder imbedded on the side...lolx.... ;D.........now i read it like "ROCKonic"...... ;D before you buy that fancy lookin new visor bring your buckets to the nearest airbrush shops its like 1500-2000 pesos man! .....Then get that shiny new visor... Oi .......remember to wear goggles with fullface helmets.....If u have a knack for getting your nose bridge aND eyebrows every week its your call man! ;D Fullface+Goggles=safe Fullface+fancy fckin sunglasses=Built in xmetal with stitches ;D Goggles are for safety Sunglasses are for fashion U know that @#$% on tv bout hitting the lenses with sledgehammer....... ....lets see em hit them lenses mounted on their face!.....Oh my god luk at me! universal soldier optics packaged with extreme burning sensation and probable pemanent blindness?....... ;D Goggles wer made for protection not fashion so use ur brain brothers......OMG i luk gud w FF n shades....i look liike a real pro......ur gna need a pro plastic surgeon man! ;D Anyway so this is a brief summary of full-face helmets and its importance regarding safety. did that make sense?.... just kidding.............. ;D

;D i would like to add if you own or planning to buy azonic azx helmet, replace the dangerous visor. or better take it off.
I have already witnessed 2 riders cut their pretty face with the stock visor shattered after a crash. I saw one last loag race a novice rider, face plant on 15 foot drop, he rolled forward on his head pinning his visor it shattered on his face sharp edges cut his face, he was stitched up.
helmet visors should be flexible like (troy lee moto ace, but expensive here, 661 stock visors)
Some one should tell azonic about this I dont know about their latest model.

i often wonder about DH racing in the phils. why do they insist on putting huge drops like that? it's not the redbull rampage. DH racing has never been about hucking man-size drops.

In defense of azonic azx helmet because im using 1 (lol! ;D) and its quite reliable and snell certified! I was also there in laoag and i dont think it was the visor that caused the cut on his face. It was the sunglasses he was wearing. I think any type of visor is potentially dangerous specially if you're not wearing any goggles. Dude if you're really planning to do some serious DH, better get DOT or Snell certified helmets. I think that should be one of your major considerations in choosing a DH helmet. The mouth guard is usually the one that's vunerable and you dont wanna experience that Im sure. ride safe... no helmet... no ride...

hey konan, does your "stainless" D-loops rusting? the new ones kc are plastic buckles na. Ohh Now I have a thing to complain about the MadMax ;D heheheh. Yeah dude, the japeyk stainless D loops are rusting na ;D I saw a Bell helmet, the Bellistic I think when i went to Cartimar last year . i think for 4.5 K or less its the best boom for the dough helmet outthere, with Bell's reputation, you can't go wrong Man. If only I'm there in the US I'd by 1 coz its being sold at only $ 19 as advertised in a Mag. Go for the Carbon PeachyBaby ;D It would really compliment your VPX frame

To Peachy: Yes they do put drops like that in World Cup races and ol of them hit it so fast. Also large gaps like the one in Palawan.
Azonic are very good helmets. But the person at Laoag shud have put on some goggles.
Allan had a cut above his eyebrow while practicing at La union, before. He was wearing a fullface helmet only. Now he is always using his goggles together with his full face.
Also: Choose your goggles well.A friend has a cut just above his eyebrow too, because he took a spill hit his face. Knockout for a while. And the rubber which holds the foam of his goggles cut his skin about an inch.
To stormloader: If your buying a helmet don't buy cheap. Its your head we're talking about...Medical bills are a lot more expensive...
Peace brad have a good ride!!!

I marshalled. all of them held here in vancouver. no huge gappers and no double digit drops. held @ whistler mtn and grouse mtn. i'm not sure, myb the WC courses here are just whimpy?

i often wonder about DH racing in the phils. why do they insist on putting huge drops like that? it's not the redbull rampage. DH racing has never been about hucking man-size drops. Yeah you're right... Ive been wondering when I would be able to race in a track thats as fast as ridge 3 (tagaytay) without those super big drops and jumps that makes you loose your momentum... Ridge 3's my kinda track... ;D I guess it has something to do with the hills (not mountains) we have here. Most of the race tracks here (at least those that are relatively accessible) are really short so organizers compensate by adding more technical stuff. In addition, most spectators here in the Phils enjoy more when they see riders crashing... and thats someting really sad...

from the sounds of it maybe your handle should be PureSpeed i have always though DH racing is about speed going downhill w/ rough obstacles. IMHO. your hill/mtn explanation and crashing (for entertainment's sake) sure makes a lot of sense. i do agree that is sad.

thanks for the replies guys (kahit OT na yung iba hehe) i realize now that i shouldn't go for cheap helmets. thanks for the reminder nightcrawler (though of course i'm very much aware of the risks involved. thing is i'm a cheapskate hehe) sabi nga if you think you have a 3k noggin then you buy a 3k helmet. So OK maybe I'll peg my budget @ 5-6K - so is my noggin worth only that much then?! haha maybe i can get a 661 model or bell. azonic and TLD are too pricey for me at this point. so right now maybe i'll hold off buying a cheap fullface and save up for a quality one. also since i'll still be using a halfshell i'll have an excuse not to go too big, too fast or too daring right?

To Peachy: Thanks very much for uploading the pictures.
To Puregutz: Hope now we understand how much our work cut out for us to have atleast half of their skills. The picture above was taken from 2003 World Championship Lugano, Italy; 2004 World Cup Mont St. Anne; 2003 or 2004 Race at Whistler Canada and 1 pic Bromont Canada World Masters Championship 2003.
Kindly note our spectators are most happy clapping for those who can do technical stuff, than those who took a spill.
So guys dont get it over your head.If can't do the drop let it go....start learning small ones first then gradually improve your skill. DH is 90% skill & mental. Getting hurt is part of the sport,if you push your limits way too much.
We all have our hard times, so take it slowly and surely. It takes dedication if you love our sport. Ride hard and Ride smart. Peace.

I watched Dropzone Taytay and although the people were heckling gibbing..they only want the speed and the jumps..They dont want the spills and were really concerned for riders who did spill/crash. sir Mervz, very interesting thread. I need a FF as well. I saw a KJC helmet that was truly a DH MTB model with the DOT sign. Twas light and comparable to the 661 comp in weight. Is this any good? For my kind of riding [pang Peak 3 lang] , can I use a full face aggro XC/trail helmet like the Giro Switchblade? Light and dami vents nun. Sorry for the slight OT

Hey Alpha where did you saw that KJC helmet? I think I saw one DHer using it and it looks really nice. I was thinking of getting one... For my kind of riding [pang Peak 3 lang] , can I use a full face aggro XC/trail helmet like the Giro Switchblade? Light and dami vents nun. Wag ka na mag switchblade. Like I said before, the most vunerable part of a FF is the mouth guard. The detachable mouth gurad of a switchblade is not as strong as a real FF. Get a real FF if you can afford. (I think you can get a good FF for the price of a switchblade.) Good luck and see you on the trails...
