i entered my first race today (dec. 30). the race was organized by the san juan (la union) cycling club. i weighed in at around 70 kg and was placed at the 75 kg. class. there were 3 classes only, open class, 75kg and over, and the 40 years old and over. the course was 46 kilometers long. there was at 15km. of paved road and the rest was rough and very rough terrain. two kilometers into the race the course turned unrideable that we all had to carry our bikes up and then carry it down again for some 100 meters. expert downhilll riders could have attacked it. then it was flat for some 10kms through dusty roads, loose sand and a creek. then came the steep ascend which was more than 6 or 7 kilometers long. on my way up some riders have given up and were already coming down. luckily i made it through the second to the last check point where they give out a ribbon for each rider who pass there. i pushed and rested for most of the climb. after two kilometers from the checkpoint i gave up and rode on the sweeper car. the descend was a killer, more than 2km of hard and slippery rock where water makes it course during the rainy season. after that comes another 2 or 3 kms of very steep descend then its the lowlands. another 5 or more kilometers of paved road before attacking another ascend. i did not see the last climb because the marshall drove around it. when we got to the finish area the race was already won by a kid who had a 40 min margin over his rival.
there were tips on the internet saying not to go all out at the start and conserve energy but the riders i have seen did the opposite. the local folks i talked to along my many stop overs along the first steep climb said that riders attacked it like crazy. they were long gone while i was conserving. during the course of the race, i never would have believed it, but it was easy to reach one's maximum heart rate.
there's a race coming this february during our own town fiesta. i hope that there will be a 20 km race for novices again like last year.

Rab.. I still salute you and congrats brad.. You experienced it and you will craving for more.. ;D ;D. XC races is very fast pace. The only thing you can do is training, lots of training specially on intervals. This will train your heart rate to go down in a short period of time (recovery) and you will benifits on races. You can add long MTB rides for 2-3 hours non stop with 70-80% heart rate. If you do this twice a week of each within two months you will be ready for the February race.
Are you from San Fernando La Union? I grew up in Aringay La Union.

my advise for any race is look at the route and try to ride it. So you would know when to catch up or where that sneaky hair pin curve is. Sip water every 15 mins. Rest on downhills if you can.

pros go to a training regimen, there are recreational riders who follow their regimen - unsponsored racers if you will. they invariably finish in the top half position, even top ten.
there are also rec riders who don't follow a regimen but their cardio and endurance levels are up there that going up and down the maarat wall is like buying suka for them while it's hell for the rest of us.
what is certain is that riders who compete would like to be in fit form before a race be it 3 months before or a week before raceday. they would most certainly want to ride the course days before the event to map read it.
imho, you can say "may race sa sabado, sali ako!" when the heart, lungs and legs are in "good riding condition".

@timothy, owen is right in saying "imho, you can say 'may race sa sabado, sali ako!' when the heart, lungs and legs are in 'good riding condition'".. he was actually our back-up in the Polar Eusebio AR with this trusty roadbike.. and he was indeed the epitome of a rider in "good riding condition".. sabit lang, napasubo (he was not expecting it hahaha.. thanks owen!!!) why? coz he was a constant bike commuter back then.. and that did the trick..
