Hi MTB Peeps,
Due to my hyper thyroid, I drink a lot of gatorade every ride. I normally consume 2 liters to avoids cramps and replenish the Potassium I lost during sweating. ( I also bring along bananas ).
I know too much of something could be bad for you, I only bike on Saturdays so I don't know if 2 liters is too much.
Does Gatorade over consumptions has side effects?
Thanks, for the meantime I might just dilute it with water.

Since you are hyperthyroid, its actually beneficial for you to drink Gatorade especially during an intense physical activity. Hyperthyroid individuals, as the name implies, are in a hypermetabolic state and are prone to dehydration due to profuse sweating. Couple that with losses due to increased respiration (breathing) during a physical activity. So it really is a must for you to hydrate. Drinking Gatorade is better than just drinking plain water because it replenishes lost electrolytes in the body. Instead of diluting it, you can just alternate drinking water and Gatorade whenever you ride.

Some useful information on Gatorade, including instructions on how to make your own: www.angelfire.com/electronic/ultramentor/gatorade.htmlYou definitely need the fluid and the electrolytes, but with the quantity you're consuming you're also getting a massive amount of simple sugar. In terms of side effects, that isn't going to leave you sterile or produce mutant children, but it's also not entirely desirable. You might consider mixing your own formula, with a LOT less sugar, or looking into alternatives. One good one is buko, nature's own energy drink. One of the best rehydration formulas on earth, and it tastes good too!

If your burning the calories and sweating the electrplytes wpould it still be bad? 2li of gatorade would seem reasonable if it was a straight long ride and your not ingesting anything else

i like the new Gatorade Propel. it's not as concentrated but i either dilute my Gatorade or bring water anyway. i also usually have some gel or something on a long ride. Propel it's also a lot easier to drink when it's warm. it doesn't get sticky like regular Gatorade. 100 Plus is also good.

@ king Hmmm...I'd tried 100 Plus, didn't like it as much as gatorade. I'll look for those propel.

Gatorade propel makes me have an acid attack...
So reading Dayuhan's link I believe a bottle of mountain dew and a piece of egg (with salt of course) plus some water will be a good combo hehe

gatorade is good. but i guess a more natural buko juice, egg, banana, and other nutritious food is far better to take inside your body... go natural, go herbs!

2 liters = 67.63 fluid ounces, so in 2 liters of gatorade you're talking roughly 25 tablespoons of sugar. That's a lot. Sure, if you're burning the calories it may not be "bad" per se (though you might want to brush your teeth along the way), but if you'd rather burn more calories than you consume, you're not doing yourself much good by chugging down sugar.
Personally, for a half day ride or less I just use pure water. For a full day ride I'll drop a little salt in the camelback (a teaspoon or so can't even be tasted), bring a couple of oranges and a banana to eat along the way, maybe have a gatorade halfway through the ride.
For the OP, might be worth trying, initially, 1 l of gatorade and 1 l of very lightly salted water instead of 2 l of gatorade, and adjusting from there...

if you have that condition and you are already suffering from its symptoms, isn't it more appropriate for you to focus first on its treatment rather than over dosage of gatorade? both my sisters had that and treatment is not that expensive...then you don't have to worry about gatorade. just my 2 cents.

2 liters = 67.63 fluid ounces, so in 2 liters of gatorade you're talking roughly [glow=red,2,300]25 tablespoons of sugar[/glow]..... Wow!!!!! BEST ingredients for Diabetes.... Imagine if you are actually eating sugar using the tablespoon... then drink water afterwards...

Seems to me that a good alternative would be any of the oral rehydration salts that get prescribed for dehydration patients. You'd get all of the electrolytes and fluids, but not the sugar!

Actually it's true that on an all-day sweaty ride just water won't cut it, when you sweat you lose salt and other electrolytes, lose too much and you're at high risk for cramps, among other problems. Spoonful of salt in the camelback and a few bananas (for potassium) and oranges (for sugar) is all most would need, but a guy with thyroid issues would need to be careful!

I think drinking gatorade is ok but mind you 2 liters of it contains a lot of calories. I suggest you take hydrite instead (much faster effect). good luck!
