Allegra ask the question because more than a hour endurance with (75 -95% of max heart rate) you need to re fuel every hour. I used powergel for fast recovery then an apple or other brand of recovery bar after 30 minutes.

i'm glad this thread came-out, kasi i have a lot of questions regarding using power gel or for that matter power bar. i'm 52 years old with some hypertension issues, i do long parusa rides once in a blue moon and most of the time i bonk-out somewhere. i never-ever tried this power bar or gel thingie yet kasi i'm worried that these may interfere with my hypertension issue. i even made baon with the power gel given to me by weekendrider (last time he was here) when we did kandila last sunday, but even if i bonked-out somewhere during the steep climbs portion, i hesitated in using it. my question is: is it safe for hypertensive like me to use power gel/bar as a recovery supplement? will it not cause BP to shoot up abnormally? kasi i believe age is catching-up on me and i need to use power bar/gel during long parusa rides TIA

how long is a badminton game? more than 1 hour of continous play? Here is what I did? 07:00am to 07:30 - warmup & strech 07:30 to 08:00 - rest while eating 1 powerbar (yon meron cereal) 0830 to 11:30 - actual game nag hyper mode ako parang bitin. (best of 3 race to 15,rally point where 2 games I have played in actual game) So until 12 pm laro pa kami walng tigil. When I got home do some spin 45 minutes ikot. Then When i got tired kain then 2log. ;D I dunno kung ang bike training provided my the edge or the powerbar. rgds socs

So far I haven't experienced any problems with my blood pressure shooting up while or after biking (Or I just can't differentiate if it's fatigue already or high blood pressure hehehe). I just avoid those gels/bars that have caffeine. You may want to try it while you're at home so you can monitor any sudden change in your BP

I might be wrong though haha

I think its better to just go natural less expensive. Bananas still the best way to go for only 20-40 pesos for one piging. Then after the rides, what you need most are carbs and protein. So just chow down on pasta and soya then fruits for those vitamins and fiber

i dont believe in powerbar..mas effective sa akin ung Gel..i take it 10 min before the sufferfest (i.e. long steep climbs)..or when i feel drain na ung energy ko during long rides..i immediately feel ung instant energy..i dunno if it is psychological lang or physiological hehe.. pero i try to avoid it now additional gastos lang hahaha!!

(correct me if i'm wrong)

i've been a powergel user for almost 2 years now but i only use it at times when i feel that my energy level is really getting exceptionally low and where there are no immediate foods and drinks available within the vicinity of the ride to replenish that lost calories ;D so far - powergels seems to be working well for me i usually buy powergels at powerbikes for P65 - P70 each

Sir Arci -try dried nuts specially almonds. Is a good source of carbo and lots of benefits but try to eat before the hunger strike. Mostly hard food are longer to digest specially on rigorous exercises.
Eating before ride is very helpful but your body have a limit to store energy after that become all waste (the max energy limit is base on body weight). In rigorous exercises (above 75%) the energy in the body will be depleted. It is necessary to re fuel (food and water) to maintain constant energy. But if no refueling done and all store energy been use your body start to consume body fat as fuel. But if your not intent to lost weight and no re fueling your system force to stop (bonking).

Here's my take on energy bars and gels. They're a convenience item. You can get the same nutrition from other foods. They won't make you faster, stronger or improve endurance. Those kinds of improvements only come from training. Don't let the marketing fool you. You won't get any additional "power" from these products, they will give you calories and calories = energy. You need to replenish your energy/fuel when exercising or you will bonk.
Do I use these type of supplements? Of course I do. I don't have the time or knowledge to create my own bars and gels that are an optimum carbohydate blend to be quickly effective and easily absorbed by my body. Besides, these products can sit inside my hydration pack for days or weeks and still be edible.
Do they work? When I'm on a long ride and I have not eaten for several hours, I'll have a gel. It's quick energy and instant calories, a sugar high. Then again, a half can of soda with high sugar content will do the same thing (but the packaging won't be as convenient). Any solid food will be a substitute for "energy" bars. Those with a high sugar content seem to hit my system faster (candy bars, granola bars, cookies). No matter how many gels I eat, it won't make my conditioning any better. I won't be any stronger/faster at the end of a ride than I was at the beginning.
Bottom line... I like the convenience of a small package, that will stay edible after being in my pack for several weeks, and will quickly be absorbed by my body for use as energy. The downside is the expense and the litter that some people leave on the trails.
My favorites are PowerGel with extra sodium and Clif ShotBloks. Both give me sugar energy and electrolyte replacement in one overpriced package.
