I known someone in that category and keeping his body in check by exercising and watching the food intake (away from fatty food).

yeah, im overweight. plus, it runs in the family. im quite sure it'll kill me, or one of its "partner diseases". Doc says all I can do is delay the onset, or live with it. i've failed on delaying its onset, it's all about living with it na.
biking is now a part of my system. ung diet na lang...

first found out i had diabetis 6 years ago. the early symptoms i had were urinating frequentlly specially during sleeping hours (had to wake up 3 times to urinate), i easily get tired and i had rapid loss weight even though was not dieting. my blood sugar when examined was 170 and the normal was from 80 to 120. at first the doctor told me to diet and see first if i could lower it just by dieting but it was really difficult giving up what i love most (eating) hehehehe. finally the doctor prescribed twice daily intake of avandia 4mgs and once daily of solosa. so far i have only managed to keep it at 140 to 170 so exercise was the only missing ingredient in keeping it much lower. I play badminton two times a week and do 30 minutes of biking daily. so far this has helped me a lot maintaining a low sugar but of course still with the aid of medicine. My target now is to really adhere to strict dieting and let excersice without medicine lower my blood sugar.

How does one check for high blood sugar? Fasting Blood Sugar test ba? any other test?
How often? Once a year test upon the age of 30?
What are the symptoms? Frequent urge to jingle every few hours? Overweight? Tiredness at all times? Fatty liver? Trend in the family?
Any advice?
Thanks!

Pa-sked ka na for you FBS for you to know your blood sugar level. Crazyboy, I have my FBS checked every year. Results show that I'm fine. But I have frequent urination, as in every 3 hours, that's 8 times a day, everyday. Our family has a history of high blood deaths. I'm very, very concerned. I'm skinny, and always tired. But then, I bike-commute to work, play badminton (like it's the last game of my life ;D) 3 times a week, and I'm a workaholic, which could explain the drain of energy. In case there are other tests to check the blood sugar, I'd like to have it!!! Takot ako! (scares me)...

Hi all!
I was diagnosed with diabetes too just barely 3 weeks ago and that's why I got into MTB. =) Need to lose weight from 211 lbs. to 165 lbs. as am 5' 10".
Any tips on biking safely with my condition? Also, what's a good diet plan to follow? What exactly makes for a good diabetic diet?
At first, I really felt so depressed about the whole thing. Pero nandiyan na 'yan and I'd better live with it na lang. And live with it well. In fact, I now consider God's blessing because I need to be fit and eating the right foods for the rest of my life na. Imagine, if dehins ako diabetic, baka tumumba na lang bigla sa cardiac arrest or develop liver problems due to drinking. =)
Any tips on dieting, weight loss, biking? Will be very much appreciated!

Will be very much appreciated! me too..last year during my annual PE..border line blood sugar was detected.. i would suggest that you invest in HRM (heart rate monitor) then engage your exercises in aerobic threshold muna 60% - 70%...to loose the excess fats..exercise at least 5 hrs per week.. im happy to say na controlled na ung blood sugar with regular exercise and tsibug in moderation lang...for diet naman effective saken ung low carb/hi protein diet.....good luck pards!!

hey migs, thanks very much for the tip =)
actually, am already at the stage that am taking insulin shots twice a day because the current state of my liver prevents me from taking oral medication for diabetes.
Yup, I think it'd be really wise to invest on a heart rate monitor so i could effectively do aerobic exercises.
thanks again, brad!

Fish are plenty and cheap! Just cycling or even walking up and down the streets would give you enough of a workout

yikes! pretty hard to do that since I'vve got my life set in Manila already. =) But I'll take your advice about the veggies and the fish. some people substitute kangkong/ pechay/ camote tops for rice. =)
BTW, I've been checking my blood sugar lately, and am doing 120 already. normal na yata yan, I think. Hope it continues though.

I think it's better to ask a doc what your diet should be , I just read your a diabetic pala It's important that you have support from your family, it's hard to stick to a diet when yur family is eating lechon next to you The best exerise to lose weight is running Get a running book first so you dont get injured, kasi you dont even have to run fast to lose weight

Hope it continues though. If its FBS, then its still high for the NV of FBS is 70-109. If its RBS or random blood sugar then its normal. Your diet is no different from a normal person's diet. Heck, all of us need to eat right if we want to live longer and stay healthy. The only difference, since youre already a diabetic, is that you have to control your blood sugar level. You have to watch not only the types of food you eat but also the amount so as not to have fluctuations in your blood sugar. Here's a list of guidelines for diabetes nutrition: 1. Eat healthy carbohydrates and choose fiber-rich foods. It could be found on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes and low fat dairy products. To control your blood sugar level, eat about the same amount of carbohydrates every day and space it throughout the day. If you eat more or less carbohydrates than usual at a given meal or from day to day, your blood sugar level may fluctuate. 2. Limit your intake of saturated and trans fat. Your risk of heart disease and stroke is higher if you're a diabetic. As much as possible try to avoid using butter, margarine and mayonnaise. Since you cannot avoid using fat totally, then use monounsaturated fats like olive oil and canola oil. All types of fat are high in calories so moderation is essential. 3. Curb your dietary cholesterol. The most concentrated sources of cholesterol include organ meats (lamang loob), egg yolks and whole milk products. Use lean cuts of meat, egg substitute and skim milk instead. Eat more fish and chicken (prefer breast with no skin). 4. Avoid sugars and sweets. Use artificial sweeteners. For starters, try reading labels when shopping for food. I hope this will guide you to eat healthier. Like what some of the guys have posted, you should exercise and try to lose weight. You should not rely on diet alone. I would also recommend that you see a Registered Dietitian. Together you can develop a diabetic diet based on your health goals, tastes and lifestyle. And to monitor your blood sugar, I would suggest you have your Hemoglobin A1c checked too. It will tell you if youre able to control your overall blood sugar. Hemoglobin A1c will tell you how your blood sugar levels have been running for the past 2-3 months. Studies have shown that glycohemoglobin values in the "better ranges" correlate with less incidence of diabetic complications later in life. Always remember....everything in moderation. HTH

GREAT ADVICE qt_kat! Really appreciate it!
I took my blood sugar level using the random method. So I guess it's close to getting to normal since I got a 166 reading just before dinner today.
I guess the next order of business would be to consult a registered dietician. I would definitely have to agree with you that everything in moderation. I think this is where I totally failed the past 30 years of my life. Nakulitan siguro si Lord sa kawalan ko ng disiplina sa sarili kaya binigyan niya ako ng diabetes. At least now, am really obligated to discipline myself in my eating and fitness habits. He really works in mysterious ways. =)
Again, thanks for the advice, brad!

I was a diabetic for 32.5 years before I had a kidney-pancreas transplant. qt_kat gives some very good information on Diabetes. To add just a few notes in random order, the blood test is called a HBa1c for short and should be done every three to six months. Before meal sugar should be 140 at the most and this is still too high. Egg yolks are not as bad for cholesterol as first thought, but I limit myself to two real eggs a week. Do not fry your eggs in butter or grease. Avoid simple carbohydrates as these turn into sugar before entering your bloodstream. Things I noticed when in Manila: If you are going to eat rice, at least use brown or whole grain rice. Limit your intake. Whole grain breads are best, but limit your intake. Avoid anyhing that says enriched flour in the ingrediants. Vegetables are best eaten uncooked or steamed.
One more point, if you are going on a long bike ride, take along some glucose tablets in case of low blood sugar.
I ride at a high cadence to help my already damaged vascular system. I usually pedal at 85 to 95, but any excerise is better than none. Cadence can be different for each rider.
Like I said this information was very random I was just trying to add a few points I thought were important.

wow, thanks for the tips!
My blood sugar lately has been in the range of 80 to 105 every morning before meals since I started biking everyday. I also take chocolates or bananas if I feel that my sugar is dropping.
Talagang everything in moderation lang. I hope I learned that early, though. =)

I hope you have a long and healthy life. Moderation is great and so is consistency. The amount of physical effort in my work was not consistent everyday and added to the challenge in controlling my sugar levels. Because I was a brittle type 1 diabetic, my sugar levels were a challenge to control. But I adapted a lifestyle to fit my needs and found that I went 10 years or longer than other diabetics before the diabetic complications set in. If I can do it, I know you guys can probably do it better.

yup, consistency is key, I guess.
But edp773, is it actually possible to live a normal, healthy life as a diabetic if I just continue to exercise and eat right all my life? could it be possible for a diabetic to live with the disease and not suffer the complications?
