First of all thank you all for accepting me to the Pinoy MTBiker community. Used to play tennis but had to stop so I am looking to cycling as a new sport. I would like to seek your comments and advice on some built bikes that I have been canvassing. I am opting for full stock parts at the moment but I'd be glad to hear your suggestions. Off the bat the following are my short list in the price range of 17-22K based on online prices.
1. Trek Marlin 5 2. Giant ATX 1 3. Giant Rincon Disc 4. Scott Aspect 750 5. Cannondale Trail 6 6. Cannondale Catalyst 2 or 3
Hope to get your expert tips fellow bikers.

I'm too lazy to get the parts but i'll add to your criteria.
1) Size - make sure you have the correct frame size for your height. 2) Personally, i'd go with 27.5 tire sizes just because they're more available in the market.
I'm biased on brands so I won't go that route, haha. I'd go with Giant though, bang for the buck component wise.

You might want to consider the year model of the bikes you have listed since some frames have new features than the old ones Also, consider the future-proofing of the frame (look for tapered headtubes).

Thanks anthrax76 and konablack, I looked at some of the sizing guides and they recommended the small frame, thanks also for advise on the wheel size and the tapered head tubes, some of the models I saw still had straight head tubes. As to the Giant frames what would be a better choice Talon 3 or Rincon Disc?

if you're looking to the future, then the Roscoe should not be int it. The future would be a 130mm travel bike (frame) or up.

Some local bike shops are advising me to try the Chinese (Trinx, Foxter, Sunpeed, etc) brands with higher spec parts, would this be a good idea compared to the Trek and Giant brands?

Here's my take, swapping out components is whole lot easier than swapping out frames. you will eventually wear out your drivetrain but it will be so long before you wear out a frame (if you even can).
So my approach is always get a good frame, as much as i can afford. then get at least an acera or alivio drivetrain. reason is, i'm not even a hard rider so any advantage in weight or stiffness and i won't even feel it. when the time comes for a replacement, i would either get the same groupset (by this time it will already have technology trickled in) or truly do an upgrade. and it would be so much easier to change components rather than change frames. believe me, i've changed frames before and it's a headache.

I often see built bikes by trinx, looks promising. It's up to you if you would prefer this brand or the other Also, you might want to scout other sites (OLX, FB buy and sell groups or pages) for good deals if you have the patience with building bikes from spare parts

Frankly, I have yet to see Chinese branded retail bikes in the Philippines with "higher spec parts" (does this mean Shimano Deore and up?). At the 15k price point, most of the time the parts spec'd are no better than the branded entry-level bikes.
The really good ones I see are the typical "assemble" bikes.
Frankly, I would rather go with Sandugo bikes than the expensive Trinx and Foxter variants.

Points well taken guys, I think the ones with Deore is already in the 20k range, nevertheless I think opting for the better frame is the wiser approach as I gleam from your comments. Hope I could get a unit this weekend

Congratulations! Now get out and ride and be safe, of course. Be sure to build up your skills and don't go out riding on busy streets yet. Try to ride on not-so-busy streets.
