- enter at comfortable speed - no front brake, feather or no rear brake - hinge and stay central between both wheels (i 'did not' use the infamous words 'lean back' because i find it incorrect) - use dropper if you have one, regardless see previous - loosen up, be heavy on your feet and light on hands - let limbs go with the undulations - commit and let it go
to those who have done this (not read about it somewhere else), what is your foot position? heels dropped? parallel to the level ground? parallel to the incline?
honestly, i've been through stairs countless of times, off-road and cemented, but it still scares me. what else have i missed?

in my case, i always treat any descent 30 degrees below level with a DH rider's position, smooth or rough. but let's make this purely on stairs, no road descents.
- butt hovering the rear wheel, stomach over the saddle. the steeper the angle of descent, the more stretched out arms. - my foot, as i feel it is parallel to the ground, altough it's highly possible for a heels down as this it is a comfortable position for me when doing trials.
on braking, i've never tried more than 12 steps, which by the time i'm beginning to scared, i'm already at the bottom. on my first forbidden trail, pjax did the stairs of UP Main library, not one of us followed suit, ha ha. Veeeery wide stairs, 30 people seated abreast could easily fit with a lot of space. and it's long, you'd pretty much be 20 feet of the ground at the top, so he's braking at the rear on the descent, otherwise he'd be too fast as he hits flat ground and will crash into the plants across the road.
another impressive stair descent i've seen is in intramuros with PasawayLouie. He went down a slightly S bent staircase from up the walls to the road level. the bike will fit, you can see a straight line on the staircase but if you follow the line, the handlebars will hit. Definitely steering and braking was involved. We had to carry our bikes down those steps, ha ha.
i haven't tried it and i don't think i will go down stairs with those many steps, ha ha.

never tried doing stairs, nakakatakot haha. akay kung akay parang masyadong steep kasi e, I also saw a video, the caption was something like (non verbatim) "when you are late for your ride", guy rode his bike from his room in a condo from a high floor going down stairs then until he's outside of the building.

Stair is a good place for setting up suspension. atleast the base settingš Then fine tuning when I get to the trails.... Im usually in neutral position I dont lean back i just lower may body as close to the bike, and just let the bike hover underneath me.

ALWAYS put your rear end on top of the rear wheel as much as possible (weight at the back end). I usually go full speed when going down a few stairs, but when it's kinda long (like the one somewhere in timberland, i forgot what zone it is) approach the descent slowly, start feathering the brakes when descending (this is my preference)
I'd like to try the stairs at UP hehe and I was fortunately lucky to see Pasaway Louie do that back when we were riding with our DH buddies back then.

Oh is this about his Urban Freeride stuff? I remember DMac has a vid where he bikes with working clothes kasi, and that first came to mind.

I actually brake differently for different stairs, or stair-like terrain (steep rocky or rooty chutes/lines). If it's dry and the stairs have no metal on it, I slightly modulate the front brake and hardly use the rear. If it's wet/muddy soil, same braking. If it's wet roots or rocks (especially with algae/lumot), I don't touch the brakes at all, front or rear. I brake at the end of the steep section, if I need to stop, I'll dab and try to roost it. The keys to me making it down are: NEVER try to stop in the middle of the stairs section, wear flat pedals, and always be in the attack position (don't lean back). The faster you are, the more stable you will be, even in the rough. If there's a drop as part of the line, then definitely don't slow down.

Going down stairs can be daunting and intimidating but if you want to conquer it you'll have to practice by doing some small stairs with wide steps(if you can find one). And once you get the feel and improved your replexes, progress to the next level and of course the above posts are very relevant techniques for doing it successfully. Here are a couple of vids I've shot yesterday and today. First one, using my 26er hardtail but in the 2nd vid I was more confident with my FS as the gradient was somewhat steeper .

I keep my body really low position behind the lowered seat. I can go down much faster and stable this way. It's easy going down once you remove your fear. It's the climbing up which requires more skills.

dumb question, assuming one doesnāt brake, do you accelerate going down stairs, remain at constant speed or decelerate?
|
|
|
Post by simplej0ys on Apr 23, 2018 19:07:44 GMT 8
hehehe... dumbo! i know this first-hand. and shin. i was going down some sets of stairs. there were 3 sets i believe. akala ko dalawa. nung makita kong me pangatlo pala, medyo nag panic ako muntik na sumemplang. well, yung bike sumemplang buti ako nakatayo pa rin. kaso i used by glove-less hand to brace myself sa pader na katabi at nadale ang pinakamamahal kong shins! hahaha... so YES, i did not brake, going down, did not decelerate until i pulled on the brakes. heavy bike, heavy rider, gravity wins.
