really? i thought a good road bike would cost you upwards of 50K, while you could get a good MTB for half of that.
50K roadbike gives you a race quality rig, 40K will still be race quality, 35K hmm, yup it still would.
ok, i'm just a few months in this roadie thingie that i'm doing but here's my unassailable defense: it's all relative.
a shimano 105 groupset is already best in my book and ultegra sucks in cost to performance ratio (daw) and all of us know dura-ace is the king of the hill unless you're a campy fanatic in which case all of these shimano talk will just register as noise. it's all relative.
IMHO, (which costs less than 2 cents) mtb to roadbike comparison starts and ends on the entry level: cheapest trailworthy mtb vs. most inexpensive roadbike that will take you manila-lucena-manila in one piece.
don't even get me started with roadbike wheelsets. i'm way past the eye-candy, mtb or road!
here's another unassailable defense: i just want to ride, OK?
