Hi, I'm new to mountain biking and new to this site. I wanna try short trailing with a budget of 15k-20k on a hardtail (disc brake). So I went to All Terra Libis yesterday and it seems that Jamis Trail X3 fits my budget. They're giving it to me for 16k if I hand cash.
GT Avalanche looks ok for me but I want the white one. I called a few shops but they don't have the white on stock.
By the way, what size should I look for in buying an mtb? I'm 5"8 and weigh around 155-160lbs.
And please compare GT Avalanche 2.0 and Jamis Trail X3. Or just give some feedbacks to those who own or have tried one.
Or if you know a better bike that will fit my budget you are very very welcome!

go for gt avalanche 2.0, intent for xc [cross country] and am [all mountain] set up.....as gadget post the other thread... yah, go for the whitey ones that's what until now i'm searching......har-har-har....here's my gt avalanche set u with a white xcr fork.......

regarding the size, i find this guide helpful... How do I know what size frame I need? As a general rule, you should have at least a couple of inches of stand over height above the top tube. In other words, if you are standing over the top tube in front of the seat, you should have some space between you and the bike. Precise fit is critical for a road bike. For a mountain bike, you may want to have even more stand over clearance, since you’ll tend to move around on the bike a lot more when you’re riding trails. If you are between sizes, it is always better to get the one that is a little small (you can always raise the seat or get a longer stem) than to risk getting a bike that is too big, which could be uncomfortable or even dangerous. Frames are measured along the length of the seat tube, usually from the center of the bottom bracket to the center of the top tube intersection. Since bottom bracket height will vary from bike to bike, there is no simple formula or guide for determining your appropriate frame size. But as a very general guideline, you may consider the following for basic mountain bike sizing: 4’10” – 5’0” = 12-13” mtn bike 5’0” – 5’2” = 14” mtn bike 5’2” – 5’4” = 15” mtn bike 5’4” – 5’6” = 16” mtn bike 5’6” – 5’8” = 17” mtn bike 5’8” – 5’10” = 18” bike 5’10 – 6’0” = 20” bike 6’0” – 6’2” = 21” bike 6’2” – 6’4” = 22” bike For precise sizing, it may be best to visit your local bike dealer and try sizing yourself on several brands of bicycles. By the way, road bikes are traditionally measured in centimeters, while mountain bikes are measured in inches. What size full-suspension bike will fit me? get a 15.5 or 16inch frame match it with 100 or 120mm stem... dont try buying 17 or 18inch....it will hit your balls trust me i had 17" avalanche and good thing i have 3 children now.... unless you're frame has a sloping top tube you can go upto 18" without worrying your dong.... btw, did you know that most bicycle frames are manufactured in taiwan and Gt is china..

Thanks for the insights on the GT Avalanche guys. Any Jamis Trail X 3 owners here?
Regarding GT Avalanche 2.0 (Disc Brake)... How much should I pay for it if ever? I saw one on this site for 19500 but it's blue..then I asked 2 bike shops through phone, 13500 and 15500 respectively.

I owned a Jamis Trail X 3.0 and have also tried a GT Avalanche 2.0. I'm 5'7.5 - 5'8 so we're about the same but I'm a clyde at 240lbs. I bought the 17" Jamis Trail X 3.0 and tried the small from GT Avalanche 2.0.
On the Jamis:
- It's a heavy bike out of the box - Very durable frame / sturdy - Solid stock wheel set - A tad slow on the turns / switchbacks - Can easily be lightened when you change the components (Handlebar / group set / wheelset) - The stock fork is a Gila RST which is quite hard on the elbows and pretty useless in soaking up the bumps. I had to wear elbow braces with this fork but what the heck did I know? It was my first bike.
After a few rides at the 12 hour track I had to replace the fork. I replaced it with Axon which was a whole new world for me. I also replaced the wheel set to a mavic cross trail which simply gave the bike a ton of pogi points! - Though there was absolutely nothing wrong with the stocks.
Overall - it's a strong bike that performs well with a few upgrades!
On the GT:
- fairly light compared to other stock hard tails - it's a fast bike! / very responsive / turns well and drops well - I prefer its bump absorption over the Jamis - I don't know why and can't explain this one - sorry. It just feels like it rides better
Bottom line: There is a significant weight difference between the two bikes and the GT seems to ride better, for me at least.
*** There is a white Avalanche available at Gran Trail Cycles in Filinvest, Alabang. I know because I was thinking about getting it! HTH

It just feels like it rides better ] plus the xcr as your fork............. this set up is really the one for me........if papa rock say's of his ibis as referring to an F1 ferrari...mine is also an F1 mcLaren Mercedez......har-har-har.......

Thanks nikonographer, that review of yours is just what I'm looking for. I think I'm headed to get the GT Avalanche 2.0 now. So I just have to worry about where to get it. And how much should I pay for it? Please reply to those who know the real good prices.. Thanks everyone who commented.

I am sorry if this post is a little off topic but if you are really budget conscious, there is a new variant to the Trail X series of Jamis. The Jamis Trail X 1.5. The set up is exactly the same as the X 1.0 but with disc brakes. Take note that the Trail X 1.5 is only 7-speed. The SRP for the X 1.5 is Php13,000. Available colors are Glossy White and Graphite I think. You won't be able to find the exact specs to the 1.5 in the Jamis Web Site because it's been only released to the Philippine and Russian market according to YKK. Again, apologies for being OT.
