Another masterpiece from the makers of ORTA, 24 Solo takes you into the agonizing world of 24 solo racing.
For those who raced in the 24 Enduro in La Mesa last year, that was like a leisure ride compared to this. While we were having our fun at the base camp, pacing ourselves, taking turns, resting . . . these riders were going at it as if it was a short race, only they're hammering it for 24 hours! Pitstops are as short as in Formula 1!
!!!SPOILER ALERT!!!
24 Solo makes you see just how far you can push yourself. I thought the races they did in ORTA was tough, but watching Eatough (pronounced eat off, as in eat off a plate) do the same thing for 24 hours is something else.
In the end, however, Eatough will only come in at second place because someone else was willing to give more, much more. In for me, one of the more moving scenes in the movie was seeing Craig Gordon, in severe pain already, still pushing himself, and actually come to a stop in the middle his last lap, almost unable to move (the camerman had to come to his aid). He would eventually coast on down to the finish line, and be carried out in a stretcher, having Rhabdomyolysis, "a potentially life-threating syndrome restuling from the breakdown of muscle fibers with leakage into the circulation. The most common causes are crush injury, overexertion, and toxic substances."
!!!! SPOILER END !!!
End of it all, it's another tribute to our love of the sport. As Mary Mcconneloug mentioned in ORTA, "Who cares if we're not making any money. We're living a dream. I love it!" Nobody would race 24 hours, in that intensity, for money. It's something else, and all those who've ridden their bikes through hell, and still manage a smile, and keep going, can attest to.
Those racing in the upcoming DOT 24 Hour should try and watch this. Nothing else will inspire you more for that race.
