Just this afternoon i finally decided to convert my old trusted XC rig to SS, thanks mainly to jd00 (jake) persistence and because of the financial turmoil i am experiencing right now so i have to sell my rd, fd, shifters, and cogs. it will be most appreciated for SS halimaws here for any tips, techniques and what to expect using SS, you can share to a SS greenhorn like. im planning to go to hilltop tomorrow for some test ride. thanks in advance.

please retain your cogs they will come in handy in time. you will have peace of mind, nothing to think about in what gear to shift in. where's hilltop? try to find two different gears, one for road use going to the trailhead and another for doing the trails and climbs.
BTW, what is your present gear combo?
thank you.

just remember riding SS is an acquired taste. it's like beer, the first bottle is a bit bitter and your taste buds are not used to it. after several bottles you find you're enjoying the flavor and start to look forward to the unique taste. but beer is not for everybody, some people never seem to enjoy the experience. that's ok since there are so many other types of drink.
mashing and grunting up long hills in a tall gear is different compared to spinning the granny gear. it takes getting used to, you're body has to adapt. be patient, grasshopper. the strength and technique will come to you.
we were all new to SS at one point in time. search for a thread titled "thoughts from a beginner singlespeeder" or something like that. most of all, enjoy the experience and have fun.

@ sir bobby: i am using 32x16, i think ill keep an 18t cog just in case of more serious climbs. hilltop is in norzagaray going to angat dam. whew, being SS sure is a lot of pain. i made it to hilltop yesterday but it feels like i climbed baguio, but its really something that i think i'll be addicted to..... hehehe and my bike is sure is a lot lighter now. tomorrow ill be joining th UP-MOA-KAWIT ride. tnx for the tips sir. @ sir wcoastbo: thank you sir, i think im getting the hang of it already just this morning i biked for 40++ kilometers and it felt like nothing.
BTW is it ok to use an old rd as my tensioner? or should i use da bomb or fireeye? but its quite pricey. tnx

sell your RD and get the Da Bomb tensioner. is it still only around P500? I think I got mine for P800 already last year. I liked it but it only lasted around 3 months before the roller got lost in a ride.

better use a tensioner rather than the RD. i don"t use tensioner i just find the exact gear combo to fit my horizontal dropouts. i use 36x16 on my messenger bicycle, daily use, besides it is a 17 or a 20t cog. the 17 serves as back up in case my 16t breaks ( i broke a 16t once, the 16 became 13). the 20t i use for climbs. i hang out in bikeshops in our place and wait for parts are discarded usually cogsets, chains, and bottom brackets.
so how was the independence day ride performance of your SS?

it will be most appreciated for SS halimaws here for any tips, techniques and what to expect using SS Andrew Kemp, an SS rider and president of Orange County One-Gear club told the MBAction crew jokingly: "Expect to die 5 years sooner if you ride SS.." Moral Lesson: Don't tell your insurance agent you ride SS kasi baka taasan nya premium mo, ha-ha.
