Yesterday morning, on my bike commute to work, a motorcycle suddenly came from behind and overtook me. At the last minute, he shouted "HOY" and upon hitting my handlebar, I was thrown off and landed hard on my shoulder. The impact was so great that it felt like an uppercut, rendering me dazed for a few seconds. For a full minute, I tried to get up to no avail. My arm felt like dead weight. Fortunately, the tricycle driver behind me stopped and kept me safe from oncoming traffic. 2 other tricycle drivers came to the rescue and got me up. After getting my bike safely home, i got into the tricycle and proceeded to the E.R. of Metropolitan Med Center. The X-ray showed no fractures and I was given a clearance to go home. I opened a button of my shirt and put my arm inside to support it. Proceeded to my store to log in PinoyMTBiker forum as if nothing happened. ;D After lunch, my shoulder started to hurt so I went home. When I got into bed, my shoulder started to hurt like hell. I tried to get some sleep but the pain was terrible. I tried but couldn't get up on my own, so I just lied there squirming, trying to find a position where I can remove the crushing pain on my shoulder blade. When my wife came home and saw me in bed, I told her the story. She said she's throwing all my bikes out of the building. I quickly jumped out of bed and told her I was unhurt, and to prove it, I'm going out for a swim. She must have seen the tears running down my cheeks from the pain, or the smile was irresistible (most probably), and she said she's driving me to the orthopedic. So I got myself 6 shots of local anesthesia, had my arm pulled this way and that, went home with a cast and a sling. Today, I woke up feeling dandy (ouchie...aw...aw) I thought I'd post a souvenir shot to show that, other than this shoulder, I'm fine! The question is: IF you were a driver and you swiped a biker, what would you do? Btw, the motorcycle rider didn't looked back knowing he knocked me out. I'm too sexy for this sling

I hate some but not all motorcyclist. I was once riding my bike minding my own business going at a steady pace and I was almost on the road shoulders when suddenly, a motorcycle zooms right beside me. I could swear that the gag0 driver and all of back riding buddies (they were 3 on a single motorcycle) was just inches away from seriously injuring me. What the... after they passed, I could swear that the backriding eng0t who was with him was smirking about the incident. I was glad I wasn't carrying any weapon then, cause if I were... they will suffer the consequences a la counter-strike as in " sapin sapin" with one shot @gadgets - brad get well soon. and please tell your wife to throw the bike my way. ;D

honestly, majority of motorcycle riders don't seem to have any idea how to ride properly. they have this insane idea that whatever speed they're going, everyone else should know exactly where they are (e.g. I remember in one of those U-turn slots with concrete barricades, the motorbike went through the gap in those barricades almost getting hit by car, and he was the one mad pa.)
or on our ride from Ambuklao, there was also this rider who almost hit me because he was doing a wide turn (and the road was already pretty wide ah). true enough, one of his buddies almost hit a fuego coz they kept cutting corners.
get well soon gadgets. you should file a complaint if you can remember the license plate.

Hay naku. Your landing hard on your shoulder brings back memories of my landing hard on my shoulders too.
Except that my X-Rays showed broken collarbone. Your X-Ray said no fractures and you were given clearance to go home.
Unbearable pain on mine lasted 12 days. Pain on yours lasted few hours where 6 shots of local anaesthesia plus some pulling and stretching here and there took care of fine and dandy following morning (little aw...ouchie...and... sheesh pa).
Are you sure you are fine...Sir gadgets88?
Please update us progress of your recovery.
Get well soon ... Nelson.

Get well soon nelson! I'm almost certain that the motorcycle who side-swiped you is an underbone (the small ones with 50cc to maybe 120cc). They are the one's who cris-cross the road and drive like crazy as if they will ran out of roads. Most (not all) big bike riders follow the rules (at least the ones i know do) and are mindful of other 2-wheeled vehicles, motorized or not. I also ride big bikes and often during our out of town sorties, we would encounter underbone riders figuring in an accident. For some reason, they seem to be more gutsy and daring than the big bike riders. I'm not profiling or stereotyping the underbone riders and this is by no means meant to insult or put them down (as i'm certain there are well-meaning underbone riders out there who follow the rules), but i'm sure they themselves know that this observation is true. Rise safe always, especially to our courageous bike commuters!

Gadgets, sorry to hear about your accident. From your description, your injuries could have been worse. I'm sure your riding experience was helpful in minimizing your injuries. Get better soon.
The fact that the motorcyclist did not stop shows complete disregard for others. I would like to think you, me and everyone else on this forum would have stopped to help a downed cyclist or motorist or pedestrian, even if we were at fault. Don't worry, karma has a way of getting even.
As gasoline prices rise, I'm starting to see more people riding/commuting on bikes in my area. Mostly, they look inexperienced trying to ride in traffic and I try to set an example for the other drivers around me. I don't try to squeeze past a cyclist and force them into parked cars or the curb, instead I'll wait for a clearing and then go around them slowly. Generally, I would say motorists in Manila are much more willing to share the road compared to Los Angeles. Comparing the number of cycling miles per rider we probably have much more deaths/injuries.
Regarding your wife's initial reaction... you might need to educate her a bit on our cycling lifestyle. I'm glad you were able to calm her down.
Here's what I tell my wife (who doesn't ride). Cycling is not inherently dangerous, in fact its a healthy obsession. It's no more dangerous than walking on the street. If a car/motorcyclist was to clip me while crossing an intersection, would I quit walking? Of course not. My wife's car was recently demolished in an accident by a reckless driver. Driving has similar risks, but I'm not going to tell her she has to stop driving.
Yes, I'm going to get bumps, bruises, road rash, even trips to the ER (I've been there 3 times in the past 15 years). I'm not reckless or taking excessive risks, but these things could happen and probably will. Will I live longer if I become a beer drinking couch potato? I doubt it.
I like remind my wife every once in a while... which vice would you prefer I have: bikes, babes or booze? she picks bikes every time ;D

i have almost the same sentiments against some uneducated reckless tormuts users, but its almost useless to have arguments with those so i just let them be as usual...natatraffic parin sila ;D agreeing with you ronnie/mojo that most, if not all, big bike dudes follow strict traffic rules and have good road discipline compared to those peeps, but generalizing a group is never healthy... there are so many pasaway bicycle guys (me included) rin. what would they say nalang if they see us do crazy stuff... but i do get your point as well as others with motorcycle incidents... an accident is an accident, but with sadya its never any better. im glad nothing "really" serious happened to you brad nelson. sore muscle and all, at that a tender age you should be bringing a banig of alaxan alongside with you but you're still strong and can still pose up nude. let it heal and maybe ask your workers to hide your bike from your wife, or so maybe there's still space in my garage for an anthem pagaling ka, maybe we see you saberday

It's very important to make a decision today, even before going out of the house, To make a commitment. A commitment of honesty and integrity. It's very important to learn kindness and decency early in life, because society tend to show us by example otherwise. I tell myself, If I hit somebody, I will stop and make sure he is all right. I will not run away from responsibility and obligations. Logic: If I stop to help a downed victim, it's accident. If I hit and run, it's criminal. If I were to pick up a bag of money (worth less than 1 Million), I will return it! (pag-over, pagisipan ko muna! Think it over 1st! ;D) Bo and Marcs, I agree with you. However, educating friends and relatives regarding the proper lifestyle? That's a very tall order. I'm almost sure all people have very strong sense of what is proper lifestyle but just couldn't find the discipline for it. How else can you explain the inability to attain a proper lifestyle when it's as simple as having proper nutrition, exercise and being happy? Ben Dover, yes, I intend to live past 100 with my current lifestyle. Papi Rocky, compared to your broken clavicle, this is like an insect bite. Everybody! I'm perfectly fine! Where do I register for the PinoyMTBiker race? Handicapped category! ;D ;D ;D

your lucky brad that it's just some aching-aching and be resolved by hilot-hilot...
there are a lot of pilipino irresponsible motorists here and there! the thing is, it's the governments fault!
the governments law, regulations, etc. against currupt practices are not being implemented well.
a filipino citizen who wishes to get a driver's licence, can easiy get one kahit hinid complete ang requirements as long as u bring along "ninoy" together with the payment for the license fee drug test, etc..
keep in mind that most "motorists" (i'll say 75%), don't even undergo proper training, sign reading, and safety driving tests..
so expect these "motorists" raging the streets, and always be a danger to everybody else...
so always ride safe, and to motorists here, drive safely! ok!

At least we don't creat air and noise pollution dava?
