i was just at the bike shop today and i was being offered 3 different kind of rims.... a fatboy, an ultralight mavic, and a da bomb rim. pardon my ignorance but.... which should i choose? i'd like a balance between durability and cost? fatboys are only 850 per pair, the da bombs are at 1,300 per wheel, and the ultralights mavics at 2k (2nd hand ) needless to say i need HELP!!! i've got till saturday to decide im riding a Specialized M4 and am more inclined to free riding cross country than downhill

Of course they too can be used for XC or recreational riding but they're way too heavy and cumbersome for that. May i suggest that you check out Mavic 221s or 223s" (if you're using discbrakes - they're practically the same). Th ey cost around 1.2 K in Quiapo. A cheaper alternative would be Rigida Safetly Line (ZAC 2000) or Rigida Taurus , for discbrakes. They retail for around P700 and P800 a pair respectively (Sa Quiapo also) Of course the Ultralight would be the best choice if you're willing to spend a little more

actually haven't bought it yet... am going there on fri para timbangin yung tatlo he he... i'm projecting 3k kasi i think i have to change my tires kasi 2 beses na akong napuputukan ng gulong.... i'm using only 1.5 kasi. di kaya ang weight ko? ;D but most likely it would be a toss between the da bomb and mavic... as i said i'll try to do a side by side comparison thanks for the info!!

mad doc, good luck on your shopping! just make sure the tires are trued by a pro, and that they put on a good rim tape hehehe ;D ...also, powder up those tubes, as well as your spare

Hmm...yung Da Bomb ba 1.3K a pair na o single rim lang yun? Kung ganun ka-price lang sya halos ng Mavic 221s and 223s, which, as i've suggested would be more suitable for your riding preferences so far - urban mostly right? Da Bombs are much heavier but stronger me thinks..especially kung sasabay ka tumalon-talon kina pasawaylouie sa PICC eventually hehe. Have you considered using 2.1 or 1.9 semi-slicks like the Maxxis Holy Roller or High rollers? para dehins na pumuputok yan hehe

ehhh di ko muna susubukan ang mga ginagawa ni pasaway he he.. gusto ko pang mabuhay ;D the da bombs are 1.3k per. yung mavics na sinasabi sa akin 2k for both. 2nd hand nga lang advisable b and rim na 2nd hand? atomik did say that the mavic 223s i got are already good enough ;D so kung kakayanin ako ng rims which i've got now... baka di na ko magpalit nun iba na lang and yes i have considered to get the larger wheels. z powder and rim tape..... sasabihin ko na lang ba yun kila jane pag pinakabit ko? or SOP na ba yun? one more thing...BIRD! just look for quiapos one and only overpass. baba ka dun and look at the sides... puro bike shops na yan.

According to many net reviews, it's not really advisable for heavier riders, say 180 lbs. and above ,even you don't do much rough housing. Another option would be Sun ringle single track rims. However same net reviews say that it's not designed for heavier riders (parang discriminating 'no? ;D) It's designed for heavy trailing, free ride and slalom. How about Mavic 317s and 517s? heavy duty mga 'to. i think gulliver is using the latter. Oh, and you should definitely consider beefier tires doc. alam na ni jane yun gagawin dyan ;D

Cargo: doc, In hindsight the 317s and 517s are more XC oriented and not sure if it would hold up to abuse ;D. maybe the likes of Mavic F519s? kaso mahal na ata 'to personaly am more partial to sun ringle (am using single track rims) so i 'd like to suggest the S-type and MTX models. They're pretty lightweight and designed for 4-cross and free ride.light enough for XC but almost/more than 2k ang isa but again your present tires/tubes might be the source of the 'problem' here. 1.5s may be too scrawny for you. Try mo muna mag 2.1s na semi-slicks and observe the difference it makes. i agree with atomik that the 223s can pretty much handle 'normal' riding. palitan mo na lang pag gustomo nang sumabay kay pasaway (hey that rhymed!) ;D

storm is right, i use the 517's but latest model of similar XC type for disc-only is 719 i think.
anyway, the 517's are holding up very well and will find it hard to replace them.
think part of the secret in maintaining your rim is having a good set of spokes installed (and trued correctly).

ok i just field tested my rims yesterday.... i think they pretty much held up ok.... by the way i mistook mine as 223's it turns out to be a different model... which? i'm not sure but its colored blue. ;D anyway we went in the muntinlupa trail ( despite the warnings he he... mga pasaway talaga ) with the dirt, mud, and grass... but mostly mud and i think it did ok. thank God i was able to switch to bigger tires a pair of 2.3 high rollers (d@mn things were hard to find) but even with those tires my tail was swinging this way and that and was barely in control. but we did come out of it alive.. so i think thats a good thing he he so i may just keep this set up till december... when i could afford the 517's or if i'm lucky...maybe even the 519's sir gulli... the spokes? will the Php 500 spokes that jane are selling be alright? i'm using the ones that she had originally sold with the bike

sir gulli... the spokes? will the Php 500 spokes that jane are selling be alright? i'm using the ones that she had originally sold with the bike those should be ok for now when they start acting up, consider a set of DTs they're much lighter and will last forever downside is they're 6-7x the cost

hmm sooo either i lose weight or get even bigger rims.... decisions decisions ;D i think i'll just try to lose weight muna before switching to the lighter 223's atomic is using 221's and i've seen him jumping his bike all over the place.... so palagay ko.... diet muna ko... para makabili ng mas magandang rim. BISYO NA TO!!!!!
