Reading this story. www.smh.com.au/news/beijing2008/cycle-pack-attack/2008/05/08/1210131112608.html?page=fullpage#contentSwap1I can't help but be outraged at the behavior of an idiot automobile driver. The long and short of the story is that a group of Australian bikers, which included young Olympic hopefuls, were out for a training ride when an inept, obviously retard driver overtook them and slammed on the brakes, causing an accordion effect where in the bikers slammed into the back of his car and each other. Luckily no one seems seriously hurt, but it still pisses me off. As a cyclist, I've been victim of stupid drivers. Just last Sunday, I was almost run off the road by a jeepney; the common enemy of motored and people-powered conveyers. That is why as a motorist, I am always careful to give cyclists space and if I am overtaking them close I give them space. Gratifyingly, this behavior also applies to members of my family, like my sister who says that she is always careful around cyclists because that is how she would like other motorists to act when they are around me!

This is the reason why I'd rather stick to the trails. Much safer.

this is exactly the reason why that per statistics road biking is more dangerous than mtb...they have more number of fatalities...and when you crash even at low speed, almost sigurado na peklat mo. after the jail term, the punishment should include revocation of driver's license...and he won't be allowed to drive anything again for life except a bike.

I agree, luckily they got his plate number and they should have arrested him by now. What galls me further, as I read another article on the incident is that even after the accident some idiot motorists were saying that they had it coming, one even when so far as to tell them to "get a car". Hay, as far as I know cyclists have the same right as motorists to use the road right? We all pay the same amount of taxes, in fact, I would hazard a guess that I pay more taxes to maintain the roads then the jeepney drivers and taxi drivers who seem to think we have no right in it. In Australia apparently, you're allowed to ride 2 abreast, 1.6 m from the shoulder, plus other rules etc. What are the rules in the Philippines regarding cyclists, right or way, use of the roads etc? Is there even a rule?

I am a motorist as well as a biker I remember once waving at a biker commuter when i rode along with one(trail hangover i guess) hehehe he look puzzled..
also make it a point to slow down and stay a comfortable distance with them on the road..
but there were also times when a bike occupies a whole lane as if hes driving a car and would not budge even motorist are shouting honking furiously at him.. that i dont understand..
