Where Are the Most Bicycle-Friendly Cities in the World? By Marty Jerome November 09, 2007 | 3:43:59 PMCategories: Car Culture We all know Amsterdam leads the list--since bicycles account for 40 percent of all traffic in that city. Virgin has put together a list of the top 11 friendliest cities for bikes in the world, based on criteria advanced by the League of American Bicyclists. And what would those criteria be? Why, they're enshrined in the Five Es:
1. Engineering (bike parking, designated lanes, etc.)
2. Encouragement (events and campaigns)
3. Evaluation and Planning (ongoing political bodies that make changes to existing laws and plan for the future)
4. Education (bike maps and awareness campaigns)
5. Enforcement (making motorists heel)
And the 11 most bike friendly cities? Read after the jump.
1. Amsterdam
2. Portland, Oregon
3. Copenhagen
4. Boulder, Colorado
5. Davis, California
6. Sandnes, Norway
7. Tronheim, Norway
8. San Francisco, California
9. Berlin
10. Barcelona
11. Basel, Switzerland

Guys, I wish to revive this thread. I want to update the list as to which malls, restaurants, hotels, offices have racks and as such can be considered as bike friendly. I have been tasked to make a list so that we can publish this in the newsletter to be made by the Firefly Brigade for the April 20 Tour of The Fireflies. Look at the list below and see if these places are still bike friendly and please add to the list. Maraming salamat. 1. SM Manila - basement area 2. SM Centerpoint - On the side near the motorbikes (sayang I remember way before it was at the front area) 3. Greenbelt - gound floor parking, there's a rack there. 4. Market Market - bike racks located in front of maxs resto open parking area and another one in the open parking area fronting the metro department store. 5. Cycle Art - bike rack is located infront 6. Cycle Ops in Connecticut Greenhills - beside Vicky Belo Clinic 7. Circle C (along Congressional Ave QC) - has a long pipe where u can tie ur bike. near the guard also 8. SM North - most parking spaces have, not actual bike racks but motorcycle parking rails 9. Marikina Riverbanks Mall - railings at the entrada (guarded good. i left my water canteen purposely and its still there 2 hours after 10. Gilmore St. Q.C. computer superstores - Best lock it on the post in front of PC Options's 3rd storefront. There's a gaurd there pa free 11. In Divisoria Are 168 or 618 mall pay parking - gaurded parking area, they charged my bike 10 pesos but it was gaurded naman. 12. SM Baguio - anywhere as long as you could lock it in the rails. 13. SM Bacoor has a dedicated space for bike. with railings. Lots of bikers use it. 14. Robinson's Manila - Mabini Side, look for the lagaristas and you'll find them 15. SM Megamall - "motorcycle/bicycle parking". Free, guarded parking. But no roof, a lot of bikes also chained in the railings. 16. Tutuban Mall - West side entrance along w/ motorcycle parking area. - free bicycle parking. 17. Greenbelt 1 parking bldg. Bikes can park free at the 2nd floor parking. 18. Greenhills Shopping Center. Lots of bike racks at the open parking areas, but I prefer parking in the covered parking building near McDo/Italianni's etc. All free. 19. negros grace pharmacy u can place ur bike anywer w/out worrying about ur bike. if u hav gud terms w/ the dhers bystanders outside the pharmacy they might even watch the bike 4 u 20. In Eastwood, there's a bike rack just outside Gonuts Donuts. I'm not sure if that's free but it looks it. Saw one or two bikes parked and locked the whole day. 21. Fort has a bike rack at the Jollibee store. 22. PBCom bldg., Makati - Basment level one -for employees and visitors - saw Litos bike there and where I park mybke nowadays - its free

@pasig Ferry - Escolta Terminal (they say there is also another one at the Guadalupe Terminal). sad thing though is that bikes are allowed (on board ferries) on a "case-to-case basis" only.

I hope Mercury Drug and other Drug stores should have Bike racks havin difficulty parking my Bike specially in wee hours in cases of emergency Hospitals too? would like to revive this thread as well. bike friendly hospitals naman. Medical City: parking attendant will ask you to leave an ID in exchange for a tag number (dunno how to call it) and if you lost it you cannot leave the premise with your bike and pay for the replacement cost for the tag. Secured area indeed. Manila Doctors: secured basement parking area and only 1 entrance/exit for all vehicles which is the one facing UN Ave. Guarded place and sikyus roaming around as well. ;D De Los Santos-STI: parked my bike in a tree near the ticket counter. uniformed guards offered me provide special attention to my bike. KUDOS to DLS-STI security. Not bike friendly: Makati Med!: I had an argument with the parking attendant even though I'm a patient for a tocino due to Maarats rage. Did parked in the chicken wire near the exit for MMC employees, and my rig exposed to a lot of people, and NO BIKE RACK! paging Firefly Brigade! BOO MAKATI MED ONE BIG BOO!!!

Still NO bike rack at robinsons galleria or any robinsons mall I know... Gokongweis!!! There's a covered walk on the edsa side of the EDSA Shrine where some employees and lagaristas park. Not the most secure of parking areas, but at least it's shaded. I have no problems parking there because my commuter bike blends in.

Ive asked the basement parking guards if they allow bike to park inside. aba eh natawa!!(trans: stupid jerk) whats ironic is he is on a bike.. when i asked the question .. tsk called galleria management via phone.. been transfered to and fro like a pingpong ball of forrest gump.. in the end theyre wondering why am asking the question.. and finally they said no they dont allow bikes on their parking areas.. I wish Gokongweis can do something about this.. I'm just 5km from the area and I spend 30 minutes to one hour in traffic everyday.. , 120Php of parking fee plus the skyrocketing fuel price.. Grrrrr I'm sure there are people with the same sentiments..

i agree the gokongweis should do something about this. how about sm bicutan here down south, before they had a sign "bike and motorcycle parking" at the covered parking at the supermarket side, a few months later they changed it to motorcycle parking. asked the guard where i can park and they directed me to the open parking at the other side of the mall near the tricycle and jeepney terminal. when i got there there were a lot of beater bikes chained to 3 or 4 no parking signs, wla man lang bike rack. there are a lot of villlages near sm bicutan where it would be easier and faster to ride a bike than comute or bring a car to the mall. we can save gas and lessen the traffic situation in the area. come to think of, IF sm has somekind of a save the earth program where they buy recyclables, they also have those recylable shopping bags, why can't they provide a decent and secured bike parking even if we have to pay a fee. i bet it would be ok for us bikers who comute to pay for parking basta safe ang beloved bikes natin. grrrrr talaga.is there something we can do, write a leter or start a campaign for bike parking. how about bike laws? meron b tyo nun? calling on pia cayetano and the congressman who bikes to congress!!(sorry can't remember his name pero hats of ako sa kanya for doing that). aiyt!?

dirtyjaneI think you can chain and park your bike at the underground parking area of SM Bicutan. It is the one under the department store side, but you have to pay 20 pesos. There is no bike rack there, but there are posts near the teller where you can chain your bike. A fellow PinoyMTBiker member did this before.

gnob: you should PM 32by18 and ask for Galleria parking advice. err rench who is 32by18? Anyway.. on with my quest for a galleria bike parking. asked another guard referred by a colleague, finally a guard that makes sense.. he told me that there was a rack on the basement3 parking but upon checking we havent found any we found out later that the racks where dissambled and use as barricade fro the car parking corners.. huh?? watda!! again according to I think the chief security that bikes are still allowed but you have to park at your own risk you cannot use the post signage to chain your bike.. problem is there is nowhere in the parking where you can chain your bike unless you bring your own bikerack.. oh and you are also charge with the normal car parking fee.. 40Php for the 1st 4 hours and 10Php for each suceeding hour.. cr@p!! charged so high with no decent rack and no security.. probably give up this quest.. its frustrating.. excellent customer service except for bikers.. ano ba meron sa bikers? why are we treated differently hehehe
