Take billiards for example.
20 years ago, if you play billiards, people think you're a jobless stand-byer (tambay) with no future.
Now, the sport has transcend to something prestigious because of Efren Bata Reyes.
Now we see both rich and poor people holding their sticks (tako) with their head high, and the perception that billiards players are 2nd class has faded.
We, bikers, know that biking is cool. We give respect to every biker, the rich or the poorest of the poor, the daily commuter, or the weekend warrior.
As a motorist who started biking, I have become extra careful when driving, making sure that the biker passing by is not put in a difficult situation with my driving.
The question still remains...
How do we make the biking sport prestigious? (yung malakas ang dating pag sinabi mong cyclist ka)?
How do we make the non-cyclist think that it's cool to bike?
How do we make the security guards (who are mostly bikers themselves), start to treat bikers very politely, as if he arrived in a tuxedo with an attache case full of money and a glock with a license to use it anytime he gets pissed off?

I think it depends on your get-up. Go buy some nice and terno bike wear like those in the magazines. Its mostly image and how you project yourself. Of course you better have a nice and expensive looking bike as well.
As they say.. "if you can't play... display" ;D

wear that yellow band and make the man beside you realize u can stand straighter/longer than he can and can run up the stairs if the elevator isnt available, that he looks pale beside you because you have a healthier sunbrowned skin. and his tummy is bulging and yours you can tuck.

make the jaguar (guarja) realize you can make his life/work better or miserable. Dress to impress, give him tip and make him want more....use yer imagination. "confusedshoes" say... there are merry ways of skinning a cat. ;D

How do we make the biking sport prestigious? Sports Biking is already prestigious and has earned the respect. Bike commuting is the one that lacks respect and attention. Bike commuting, like doing daily errands with your bike Buying suka, going on a date, going in the mall and kinds of shite

I cant control what people think, someone thinks Im second class, thats their problem not mine
Of course it feels good to be treated first class, but that's just a bonus for me. Whats important to me is how I treat others

Whats important to me is how I treat others you da man! idol! thanks idol lamok! share ko din a similar "second class" experience. One time after a dirty ride, Bikester brought me home and dropped me and my bike at the lobby (condo). I rode my bike directly to the basement parking where we had a new guard assigned. Upon seeing me leaning my bike on the side of my car he approached me and asked - "ikaw ba driver nyan?" I said yes, since Im the one who "drives" it He then looks at me and told me to lean my bike against the wall (dun mo isandal yan). So I did, thinking he has a point bec I might scratch my car. I parked my bike beside his desk and asked him nicely if he can take a look at the bike while I go get the car keys (manong paiwan sandali ha kunin ko lang susi) He did not answer but now he now looks unsure wether im a driver or owner. I went up, cleaned up a little and went back with the keys and started loading my bike.. this time around he was different.. "ganda naman ng bike mo sir" heheheh I was not offended, really. My wife even blamed me for it and told me I should buy new clothes to look more "respectable" hehe I actually did buy some new clothes after that incident - jerseys, bike shorts, bike socks hehehe

hehehe Cial, the day you need to buy new clothes is day I ll need buy a new bike just to impress that guard of yours ....that guard was just a nervous wreck and needs to observe people more or at least he needs glasses (that one you can sponsor, brad )

Idol Arnel - that guard was replaced already and I had nothing to do with it hehehe. You, on the other hand dont need a new bike to add to your collection because no one will ever mistake your fafable sex appeal for a "driver" Back with the topic about bike commuters being 2nd class, I think some people just give too much weight with the impression of others toward us. Bottom line is - bike commuting is fun, economical, practical, healthy and not dangerous if we do it orderly, safely and defensively on the road. What more could be more important than that?

its not hard to understand why some peeps think bikers are second class. you just have to observe irresponsible bikers zipping by, cutting a four-wheeled vehicle, cornering without looking, and then some figuring in really bad accidents they themselves caused. And some are really rude.
but of course these are a few rotten tomatoes in a whole bunch. But they exist. I remember biking in tandang sora and slowing down at each kanto, just to make sure, and then this cyclist, attempted to squeeze past me and then bam! head on with a jeepney coming out of one corner. good thing he's alive, but his rigid roadie fork became paperweight. I thought of stopping and lending a hand to the other cyclist, but he was sputtering out a plethora of curses to the driver of the jeep... and so i thought. If he was that brave to start an argument with a jeepney driver over an accident he himself caused, well, maybe he can also handle being mugged. and so i biked away.
second class? well some are even lower. But op kors we PinoyMTBiker are kewl and responsible and cute.

i often hear this from my former law prof.."those who have less in life should have more in law" ...if bike commuters are indeed 3rd class citizens, then they should be enjoying more protection from the law..right? but they dont enjoy such protection...people must be treating them as the elites! ;D

Pang porma like this? imagine putting a pedal on that thing. hehehe! no i don't think mtbikers are 2nd class, nor do i think motorcycle riders are. yes there are motorcycle riders who are undisciplined and @-holes, the same way there are mtbikers or cyclist in general for that matter who are the undisciplined and @-holes as well. like what sabretooth wrote, there are a few rotten tomatoes in every bunch. its not the ride, its the rider. kanya-kanyang trip lang yan. just my singko sentimos. ;D

i agree, it's not the ride but the rider. but those rotten tomatoes make awful stereotypes of what bikers/motorcycle riders are. the general image needs a makeover.
it begins with the person not with his vehicle. a lot of @ssholes have easy access to owning motorcycles because of hulagan (instalment payments). just 5 thousand pesoses downpayment and an @sshole can begin his awful act on the road. i hope the government realize this to prevent more motorcycle related mishaps: no motorcycles for certified assholes.
but i hope in the near future, there would be MTBs for installment ;D

Back with the topic about bike commuters being 2nd class, I think some people just give too much weight with the impression of others toward us. The problem is not about self-respect of bikers. The problem is about attitudes of non-bikers and biker-commuter alike, and specifically road planners and government. Unless we do something about the problem of (dehins naiimpress at dehins mataas ang tingin) poor impression on bikers, the treatment will stay the same for all time. Perhaps we should wear better-looking getups or use more expensive equipments to solicit a different level of respect? I don't think so. What we are going for is fair treatment, respect and courtesy, TO BIKERS IN GENERAL (not some BIG-SHOT disguised as a biker). Give respect where respect is due, kung baga. Perhaps we should start giving tips to the guards? I don't think so. We don't want to look like some "ABCDE" officials encouraging graft and corruption in this part of the forest, and then get name-called by some devious senator in an effort to obliquely maneuver attention and headline space and divert the real issues at hand. Perhaps we should be very careful with our own attitudes at all times? Like be courteous, treat people fairly, be law-abiding citizens? Maybe, just maybe, if we create a special name for ourselves, people would see members of bike clubs as welcome guests (decent educated people deserving of decency inspite of the dirty smelly getup)? or perhaps we should have a ready convincing PR talk about the wonderful world of biking? When a neighbor of mine in noodletown asked why was I bike-commuting and taking it up as a sport, What should have been a better response than the one I gave? (knee rehab and cardio exercise). Btw, stumbled upon this site the other day: Bicyclists, Motorists and the Language of Marginalization

yeah...i agree that there are those people who think that bike commuters are 2nd class and our sport too..
for the bike commuters, don't think that people treat you as 2nd class...act as 1st class citizens..think smarter...learn to follow traffic rules...wear helmet...b an example so that people will respect you...when in highway, respect others...don't drive as if you are alone...
for us bikers and weekend warriors...we should not think how others treat our sport! we are here to enjoy...in the first place, if we are 2nd class, how come we are able to build a bike worth 20k, 50k and even 200k?! ;D just do your thing...enjoy what you're doing....

bikers 2nd class? how do you react to this:
you're doing a slightly difficult uphill and enjoying the climb. on a curved section, a motorcycle slowly approaches with 2 back riders, one girl. then the driver shouts as he passes by, bullying you: "st&*%$d, mag-motor ka na lang!" (trans: ride a motocycle, idiot). with accent on "st&*%$d."
this happened to me yesterday while leisurely spinning around los baños. jamboree/pccard to be exact. alone, because i missed a group ride. the remarks really got into my nerves... i couldn't control my rage that i shouted back "ganun ba?" trying to intimidate. and gave him a furious look. wala namang ginawa un loko (he did nothing and couldn't even look me back straight in the eye). what a lowlife, i was thinking at the back of my mind.
