Tarantino uses pedal power to meet Philippine President
08/15/2007
MANILA (AFP) - Pedal-powered transport helped famed American movie
director Quentin Tarantino make his way around a massive traffic jam
to receive an award from Philippine President Gloria Arroyo on Wednesday.
Filipino director Amable Aguiluz, who invited Tarantino to the
Cinemanila International Film Festival, said he and Tarantino got
caught in traffic some two kilometres (1.2 miles) away from the
presidential palace where they were due to meet Arroyo.
So they left their vehicle and hired "pedicabs"-- chauffeured bicycles
with sidecars attached -- to weave their way through the traffic to
reach the palace on time.
The director of such movies as "Pulp Fiction" and the "Kill Bill"
series apparently enjoyed the novelty of travelling on the pedicabs,
which are normally used by Filipinos unable to afford other modes of
transport.
"The objective was just to get there on time. But he enjoyed it," says
Aguiluz.
Tiffany Richards, a friend of Tarantino who accompanied him and
Aguiluz on the ride, joked that "it was pretty traumatizing for me but
he had fun."
At the palace, Tarantino received an award from Arroyo who earlier in
the day was an hour late for a speaking engagement due to traffic jams
caused by heavy rains and floods.
